Athelstan stayed behind to help Horik continue the talks with Ecbert. He thought it was the best way to help Ragnar, by protecting the peace talks and plans for a settlement which Ragnar had started. One more warrior wouldn't have really helped Ragnar take his lands back from Jarl Borg, but staying behind to translate and negotiate would keep the peace talks from falling apart. Not a betrayal *at all*. He was trying to help the best way he could.

I know I'm late here but fun facts: King Ecbert takes keep in an old Roman fort from the Roman occupation hundreds of years before. The bath house was Roman and the reason Ragnar looks funny at the statue is because it's the first time he's ever seen a statue of that detail in stone. The round wooden carvings at the sacrifice temple is the best they had of "statues".

Athelstan didn't betray Ragnar, really. He was doing it for him, not that Ragnar really understood. Athelstan is the only one of their group that knows the Saxons and how to deal with them in a way that was more in line with how Ragnar would want to deal with them, and not how Horik would want to do things.
