IMPAIRE ET PASSE survives stewards' enquiry to land dramatic Aintree Hurdle

Impaire Et Passe had to survive a lengthy stewards’ inquiry before being declared the winner of the William Hill Aintree Hurdle.
Willie Mullins’ evens favourite rounded the final bend on the bridle but did not run straight to the line as both Langer Dan and Bob Olinger threw down their challenges in what was a thrilling finish to the Grade One contest.
Impaire Et Passe appeared to cross Langer Dan’s path after the last, while Bob Olinger also seemed to drift inwards on the run to the line, leaving Langer Dan sandwiched between them.
The judge was required to split the trio as they crossed the line, with Impaire Et Passe coming home a nose in front of Bob Olinger, with Langer Dan a further short head back in third,
A stewards’ inquiry was soon called, but Impaire Et Passe was eventually confirmed the victor.
Willie Mullins said: “When I looked at all of the different angles I thought the overhead angle looked very good. It was very revealing and that gave us a great chance. When Paul (Townend) went past Harry (Skelton on Langer Dan) after the last hurdle there was never any interference there, and I thought it was going to be very hard to disqualify us at that stage. There were pluses and minuses, but on the balance of it I thought it was a hard result to change.
“Paul thought he was idling in front, and I think that was a legitimate excuse as well, but it will be interesting to hear how it went with the stewards’. To get him back in a Grade One, and a race of this magnitude, was fantastic after his last two runs. I have to say one thing watching the race I thought Rachael (Blackmore on Bob Olinger) gave the ride of the race. Her riding was fantastic, but she just didn’t get there.
“He is in at Punchestown, but we will think about France. We will have to see how he comes out of that race.”
Henry de Bromhead, trainer of runner-up Bob Olinger, said: “He’s run brilliantly all season. It’s just a shame not to win, but there we go. A couple of people said we’d won, but sadly we hadn’t. And you always hope you’ll get it [in the stewards’ room], but c’est la vie.”

Most bookies pay 1st past the post ,so an overturned result would have had to pay out on 1st and 2nd favourites, so I'm assured some outside noise intervered with any result being overturned. And on track betting is not the betting circle it used to be compared to online betting and exactly for 1st past the post ruling they have.

Absolute disgrace that result was allowed to stand one case of interference fair enough but not 2 and it did effect the other horses in the finish ... If I'd had a bet on either of the losers I'd be fuming , racing stewards are as bad as boxing judges 😂

Racing at the top level is effectively corrupt. Everything is organised to avoid upsetting the big financial players. My wife said, having watched it, that the result should be overturned, but it won’t be because of the owners and the trainer. No one wants to rock the boat on the day.

Bob had more than enough time to pick up the winner, just wasn’t good enough. The winner was green in running bit never made contact. The winner got tired late which made it closer bit they all had a chance to get passed him while he was racing green and couldn’t.

@@Wearevenom2233 the comment I replied to was referring to the winner interference with bob. Bob and the winner were basically beside each other with 3 to jump. Hence plenty of time to get past. Yes the jockey on Lager Dan did interfere with bob after the last by steering outwards when they landed. That has nothing to do with the winner though. Had Holly of got up beside the winner instead of staying behind it she probably wins. The jockeys on the 2nd and 3rd horses cost them

A message for Chauvenist P-g martin iv been checking all sites who are talking about this race and would say probably 85 to 90% think the stewards were wrong with their decision , with most being extremely critical with their views like myself . This to me shows racing in a very bad light as lots of people already thinking it is fixed . Decisions like this certainly do not help . The big fellow in the steward room had already made his mind up as he asked Rachel 3 times did you have to stop riding ? . My opinion , you do not have to stop riding if your twice taken off your racing line for it to be an offence . I thought she handled his pathetic question well and wish she had been more blunt in her response myself . Maybe along the lines that veering off line twice and getting a bump cost me 2 or 3 lenghts and i got beat a nose you numpty , but thats just me . Until we get to listen to the stewards in their deliberation this will continue to be as shady and controversial as the boxing judges are which could well spell the end of faith in racing fairness and honesty .

Wow just watched this how on earth did that result stand? First Mullins horse is only 3 quarters of a length up with jockeys whip in his right hand and drifts taking LD ground. Then half way up the running Townsend, despite having the rail switches his whip from his right to his left causing his horse to drift off the rail again squeezing LD out of his rightful ground with the outer horse creating the sandwich. When you lose by such fine margins then fine interference makes the difference. Didnt have a bet and never watched it live but i would be appealing this decision...

As others have said, to see Townend's tactics here rewarded is disappointing. If all were allowed a straight line you'd have to say Langer Dan would have probably won it given how close together they finished but as he finished third no way you could award him the race. Should have gone to Bob Olinger with Langer Dan in 2nd given they both suffered interference.

Impaire ran all over bob Olinger, crossed infront of Langer Dan, pushed Bob off his race line, and still kept the race. Oh and i believe Bob Olinger got up, but that is just my opinion. Had him backed e/w so I wasn't down anything. I would love to see the photo and other angles of the last half furlong, it would be interesting

I believe it was correct to allow the result to stand rb never stopped riding and it was too far out to suggest it affected the result she did put up a great performance in the stewards room though as for the other 2 both drifted in to each other and Harry didn't stop riding

Interesting comments. For me its the correct decision. In UK racing and stewards its first v second only. American racing you sometimes see a 7th placed horse promoted up the field for interference a mile out but not here so LD is never being awarded this race. Does IEP impede BO? not in either crossing. IEP was a length or a length+ in front so the only way BO is awarded this race is if IEP gets thrown out completely and at 6:07-6:10 id say LD was going just as far right as IEP was going left and the contact/interference if there even was any, was minimal. For the anti Mullins comments you could say that DeBromhead is also popular in racing and RB is kinda the poster girl for racing so you would probably get the conspiracy comments whichever way this went and for LD supporters its only a month ago fans were calling for the heads of the skeltons for fiddling big hcap wins from horses that havent done a thing for years so maybe some karma in this decision.

Of course the kangaroo court in the stewards room thought it would be too much trouble to sort out a three way stewards properly so much easier to just give the race to the FPTP winner, who happened to be a short price jolly trained by the Mullins Mafia.

In 40 years of being involved i horse racing and watching it betting on it being a fan of the sport i have lost faith in the sport after bob olinger was denied the result everyone saw what happened and there is no one even experts in the game that thinks the stewards got it right it is an absolute disgrace and leads me to be suspiscious once again how much the sport it controlled by bookmakers and they are basicly stealling peoples money time and time again they will have been involved inderhand in that decision of that im in no doubt for a sport that is always trying to shake off the tag of beinh crooked well this cements that it is UNBELIEVABLE

Just to clarify.. 1, Bob was going just as well as the winner over the second last 2, Between the last two Bob lost ground on the winner and LD 3, Over the last LD if he had kept straight would have collided with the running rail 4, The winner, under a RH drive difts across LD ground and ends up on the rail. 5 LD makes a quite serious jolt to the right to miss the rail slightly impeding Bob. 6, Now the kockey on the winner, despite being on the rail now has his whip in his left hand encouraging his horse to drift... 7, Between taking LD ground and now drifting to his right half way up the run in, the winner should have been disqualified as his moves prevented LD from at least second place..and the race awarded to Bob with the winner placed 3rd...

The overhead for me shows Bob Olinger was also guilty of impeding. Pretty clear Langer Dan was forcibly squeezed into Impaire Et Passe. Skeltons actions before that were more profound but he didn’t have much choice, was either lose ground or still try to compete. IMO if no interference happens Langer Dan could may have well won.

Langer Dan was definitely the meat in the sandwich but a lot of people will see that as justice for his connections having a grade 2 horse see his career aimed towards one gamble per year in a handicap at the festival rather than trying to win decent graded races with him for the past 3 years.

@@Rebeljustforkicks So sorry about that but that is your choice I had the reverse Forecast so I would have won more if BO had won I am calling it as I saw it also when did I call myself a Jockey I was in a bad car crash and a good few years had a bad fall and Broke my C4 C5. I was to ride in a Bumber in Wexford 34 years ago on St Patrick's Day in the late 80s and I had to pack up the only Job I loved and was good at it. To this day I am in so much pain it's not nice but I get on with it, you stay safe now.
