Wait till you see part 2. I wasn't going to post it but I probably will after I deleted some of the things the conductor said. In part 2 I filmed them in Franklin Ohio after this video and they stopped the train and the conductor got off and walked to my car to get the license plate number. @briggsjos3 жыл бұрын
This is straight from the National Highway Transportation Safety Board aka NHTSB. In every state, it’s illegal for you to go around a lowered crossing gate or to ignore signs or flashing lights posted at a railroad crossing. Trains always have the right-of-way, and for good reason: Trains can’t swerve, stop quickly, or change direction to avert collisions.
@kevinrichards32883 жыл бұрын
I've seen many unpatient people at crossings that have 2 tracks. A split second after only 1 train passes, they immedietaly cross over while the gates are still down for the last few seconds not expecting a second train to come. It's better to lose a few minutes in a life than to lose a life in a few minutes.
@NaYawkr3 жыл бұрын
Crossing gates lull drivers into a false sense of security. When the gates stay down blocking traffic when the train is not a threat, and people learn to ignore the warning lights, and rely on their own judgement the Railroad is inadvertently encouraging drivers to ignore the lights and gates.
@jeffthompson96223 жыл бұрын
I received numerous dents and a hole in my vehicle from a gate runner in 2019 in Moncks Corner, SC, who got in Amtrak's right of way. Parking was adjacent to the tracks and over a dozen vehicles were damaged by stones thrown up by dragged parts of the pickup whose driver couldn't wait. Amazingly, the driver was able to walk away after being freed. His cab must not have been in line with the train.

This filming issue is a challenging one. You have the legal right to film on public property and we your fans enjoy your work. I guess the question is does a person have right to say they do not want to be filmed? They certainly don't have the right to lie to get you in trouble. In fact, they opened themselves up to charges since they lied to law enforcement. It would have been better for them to say to you "We do not wish to be filmed". You are good about not zooming on workers, so it isn't a matter of being able to identify them in your posts. In the end, you did nothing wrong from what I can see. They handled the situation wrong. Too bad they don't understand they have an admiring public that appreciate what they do, are blessed by the opportunity to watch these magnificent machines because of your efforts.

Isn't there a limit to how long a train can block a road? In Michigan, it used to be 10 minutes. If the railroad exceeded the time e, they were heavily fined. This may have been the reason they were upset of you filming them.

I like how you're being constantly reminded to be on the lookout for the thing that never actually happens. It's a total hypothetical, whereas real safety problems are ignored because fixing them costs money.
@chrisobvious3 жыл бұрын
@J Navarro Yeah but terrorism has a specific definition and the things you're talking about are vandalism. Terrorism has to be politically motivated with a political goal to be called terrorism. If you never know who did something or why they did it, it cannot be terrorism, by definition. After 9/11 in the USA, the government paid some people to sit around and dream up stuff to warn the public about. That's where you got stories back then - very scary stories all over the news - to be on the lookout for things like beer coolers (because they might be bombs) and, in the case of trains, hobos (because they might be terrorists attempting to move around the country undetected). None of those things ever happened nor were they based on anything real. I think we can look back on such things today and see it as another sad chapter in the human story of irrational paranoia, like the satanic panic of the 1980's. On the other hand, you hear stories all the time of railroad workers being discouraged from reporting safety hazards - things that could get people killed - because the company doesn't want to spend money fixing things if they can avoid it.
@mdf583 жыл бұрын
Anyone could go out and photograph or record video surreptitiously. No need to advertise oneself with conspicuous video gear. Being suspicious of obvious photography is - as said in another comment - the same as the satanic panic of 40 years ago.

Blowing gates is a fools errand, but folks are mighty impatient these days and so we see what happens :) I am not sure why RR workers don't understand railfans. Seems to me they think it is invading their workspace which couldn't be farther from the truth! There are lots of us who love watching the short lines work - especially at a customer location. The guy complaining was way out of the picture inside the customer property coupling and uncoupling the cars. I didn't even get him on video until I filmed this crew in the next town when he came up to me and told me his dissatisfaction with me. lol. Then he called the cops on me and lied . He told them I was trespassing. I though Norfolk Southern was better than that.

If Wick Moorman was still in charge this type behavior would not be occurring. Great video, Heck that SD40-2 is probably almost 45 years old I bet ?That's why Mr Jawtooth was video-ing the switching ! Not because of the 'enthusiastic' work ethic of the crew! But today....they seem just nasty to the public. I've seen one of them do that actually. They were hooking onto train cars in Leipsic Ohio and they had to stop to wait for the conductor to check to see if everything was ready but they were parked too close to the crossings and triggered them to stay down, so the engineer got out and waved them to go through the crossing.

Caryl here. I couldn't resist making a few comments. My husband Bob is an engineer for the U.P. out of Los Angeles. He works a switch engine putting trains together. He always gets his trains out on time. He has a female trainmaster who gives him a load of crap at least twice a shift. Railroading is a man's world and women don't belong in it, especially in a supervisory position. They are insecure and always trying to prove themselves. They shouldn't be Engineers either. That's a man's job. This lady engineer needs to keep her mind on her job. She's more likely to make a mistake than a man. By the way, my husband doesn't mind railfans as long as they don't get in the way, because he's a railfan himself! Have fun!!

@beeble20033 жыл бұрын
The cars going around the gates are breaking the law. However, when that many people decide to break the same law, you have to question whether the law is correct or being correctly implemented. In this case, the law is clearly correct but the implementation stinks. The railroad (as an organization; not talking about anything this specific crew could or could not have done) should not be closing roads without reason. If a trucking company habitually parked trucks across that road for minutes at a time, they'd be fined for obstruction. The railroads operate with zero consideration for other users of the spaces they cross. Yesterday, I was watching a video that included a grade crossing on a sharp bend with a 10mph speed restriction. CSX's trains on that line are so long that some of them take nearly 15 minutes to pass that crossing.

I wouldn't consider those drivers impatient. I think they waited a sufficient amount of time and saw the train is not moving so went because they thought the gates were not working properly. As for filming, you aren't doing anything illegal, but if I am honest, it is annoying. There are many people in the world who don't like being on film (even if they are not actually recognizable, it isn't fun being watched doing your job), yet alone in a situation where they are being filmed but cannot leave because they are performing a job. Put yourself in their shoes, imagine random people filming them each day, I can imagine that gets aggravating. For example, when I worked at a fast food place that was being boycotted many years ago, people recorded me cleaning the parking lot and it was really annoying. Asking them to please stop is likely going to get by face on camera even better and they are technically allowed to since they are on the side walk. I still thought they were assholes though.
@clivemortimore82033 жыл бұрын
Well done JT for not confronting the conductor. Hopefully someone form Norfolk Southern sees this and will remind their staff that filming from public land is not a problem. In fact hopefully they will use you video to inform the police of the cars and trucks that put their staff in danger by going around the crossing gates. Thanks for another good video.
@colesrc16183 жыл бұрын
I think cutting the crossing really depends on a case to case basis. I definitely wouldn’t risk my safety to get past a mainline train going 60mph. But rightfully, people aren’t as concerned about a local. Because they don’t have time to wait for the train to change direction and switch out freight cars.

Doing that would probably piss them off even more. Does anyone remember 'party line phones' and how people would get pissed if you picked up and heard just PART of a 'private' call? A two way radio IS a party line that anyone with the proper gear can listen in on. It's like yelling back and forth across a street at the top of your lungs, you have ZERO expectation of privacy unless you have shelled out the big bucks for a voice encryption system. I have an old Radio Shack scanner which has the capability to listen in on everything from CB radio up through various military bands, I used to do the Communications Intelligence (COMINT) and Communications Security (COMSEC) thing in the Navy. There is NOTHING illegal about it, but it WILL piss them off none the less.
@mjburrage52633 жыл бұрын
It would be perfectly safe to jump the gate if 1) you can see that the train is stopped or moving away, and 2) there is no oncoming traffic at the other gate. That just leaves your willingness to risk a ticket.
@stevesmith47713 жыл бұрын
Once the loco was in, there was really no need for the gates to still be down stopping traffic so kinda dont blame them. If the loco was coming out again quickly then it would have been different ...plenty of time to let traffic go by.

What do I think about the gate runners jaw tooth I think it's very dangerous for people to be running through Crossings when a train is nearby and the gates are down they put themselves and their family at risk when they do that when I start driving I'm going to stop behind every Crossing and every crossing gate until that train has gotten out of the way it's also very illegal for people to run through Crossings I really think that they should have a police officer or State highway patrol officer at every railroad crossing throughout Ohio when trains are coming and are nearby

The reason the gate didn't release is that they were up the spur, and they didn't bother to put one there. But yes, the gate runners are normal. Especially when the locomotive is at a full stop. Because as happened there it had to go full forward, take a switch, and then back up, which makes for a long time at the crossing. At least that was a low volume crossing.

I love watching trains. My grandfather worked for the L&N Railroad. As child I got to ride on freight train from getting on the engine just before it entered the roundhouse til it got to a point 70 miles away where I could safety where I could safely get off and board another going back to where I came from. I had a ball doing it I didn't fear anything about it. Both engineers were friends. One was simi-family as he's was married to my aunt's husband sister. I got of the reason I am writing this. In my current town there is a rule passed by city 10 or more years ago that city streets could not be blocked more than 10 minutes. While that train when back in there the gate should have lifted to let cars go by until the train was ready to pull back over the roadway. Rev George Universalist

I've seen some crossings outfitted with gates and traffic lights, one near me was updated with these as well as a light-up sign as well. Obviously it's illegal to run a gate, especially in this situation, and those who do should be punished if possible If they wanted a traffic signal signal that could say "PROCEED WITH CAUTION" and flashing yellow lights when the crossing is clear before turning red when the train is ready to move again. Idk. People would still run the red light anyways, that's totally an Ohio thing lol

When they have a crew on the ground that can protect the intersection when needed and they plan on tying the intersection up for a while, it shouldn't be a problem for the motorists to cross so long as they can do it safely and not bang in to each other or endanger the workers. You'll be hard pressed to find a cop that would be writing tickets there, or a judge that would uphold the charge if you did.
