Nice one Jimmy. I saw your review on Screwfix so watched this. I'm going to use it in a van to recharge a solar generator when it's overcast, by the roadside outside of town of course :D. The solar generator uses about 250 watts so I reckon I'll get a full 4 hour charge into it for every 2 liters of fuel in this, at least. For the money this seems to be an awesome piece of kit. I'm sold.

Not the quietest, but on Eco mode, you can hide it on the bushes etc and it is hardly noticeable. If you are using your generator in "Normal outdoor" conditions, then you will not get many complaints
@ManxAndy2 жыл бұрын
@@lioncurlew totally agree,hooked up on ECO, mode…..to just give constant charge to the leisure battery, it’s perfect, you don’t need a big genny, and is certainly cheaper than running the main engine to charge through the split charger, I use a 50watt solar panel through the day as a top up…..whole system works great for long weekends👍🇮🇲
@ManxAndy2 жыл бұрын
@@JimmyTheMower are you going to do a review video, now you’ve had it a while…? 👍🇮🇲
@lioncurlew2 жыл бұрын
@@ManxAndy Definitely.. Running the main engine on Split charge is not economic, as once the Starter battery is fully charged, the split charge only puts around 10 amps per hour into the leisure batteries. Not worth the wear and tear and the fuel. We mainly have Solar especially in the Summer; and in the Winter, you can use the Portable Generator with a suitable smart charger to top up the batteries for lights overnight etc. 20 amp battery charger connected to a 700 Watt generator (240 volts in UK) will bulk charge at 17.5 amps and then reduce to around 5 amps. At that point, I switch off the generator, as the Absorption rate on the charger can take 4 hours plus and in the Summer by 5am, the Sun is back up. So probably in the Winter, run the main Engine for an hour or less to top up the Starter battery and then the Gen for a few hours. Easily provides lighting etc.

@JimmyTheMower2 жыл бұрын
At the first service I changed the spark plug for and NGK one and I only use E5 fuel in ours and we haven't had any problems at all. I think with these small engines, because they don't have an oil filter the best form of maintenance is changing the oil on a regular basis.

Great video thanks very much for taking the time and effort to put it together. This video has just convinced me to buy one. How is yours doing now 20 months odd down the line? I'll be using mine to power a PA system (300w speaker output) a couple of times a year for my son's football tournaments. I didn't want something that would cost the earth for the small amount of time it would be used for, I plan on turning it over every once in a while when not in use. Is there a fuel drain pipe fitted or an easy way to drain the fuel? Thanks again

Not watched the video yet, but for the sake of future buyers i have a few things to note when using the (Orange) Impax. (Also marketed elsewhere in colours Red or Blue, and under different names) The HT lead was quite firmly jammed on the 'plug and i managed to break it when lifting it off to change the 'plug- it's just sat on there by gravity now, i need to attend to it pronto.. Use an engine oil specified for AIR COOLED ENGINES, eg Honda oil for 4stroke air cooled. These engines do not like ordinary car oil- it seems to foam up and find it's way into the combustion chamber. Encountered a petrol leak, i think it was a return pipe that had fractured, i replaced it with PVC quad bike fuel hose. The generator actually comes apart quite easily if you need to attend to faults once it's out of warranty, but just in case they haven't discharged keep away from the huge capacitors in the control circuit. If the discharge resistors were absent or faulty there's enough power stored in there to send you into orbit. It will run a 650watt angle grinder if engine warmed up first, but not on the 'eco' variable RPM setting. I don't expect these generators to go to a huge amount of hours as there is no tickover setting to warm the thing up- it goes straight up to 3,000rpm plus, which you wouldn't do with your car on a cold morning!
@JimmyTheMower2 жыл бұрын
Thats a lot of great info there, thank you 😊
@thephilpott21942 жыл бұрын
@@JimmyTheMowerThanks for the video. If yours is running OK on the oil you've selected, all well and good! I originally put Ford oil of the correct viscosity in, and things went pete tong very rapidly. I've had the impax 4.5 years now, occasional use only. Should really drain the fuel inbetween uses, but i've made do with fuel stabiliser from the local farming supplies, no obvious issues..yet. The 12volt supply works for charging car batteries, it seems to be well regulated as although rated for 4 amps a partly charged battery will only draw around 1.5 to 2 amps. It's unlikely to fry a lead-acid battery but on a newer car with CAN-BUS and ECU modules i wouldn't risk charging the battery while connected to the cars systems. The mains voltage seems to be rock steady at 230volts- so much so that it can be used to give rough calibration to an AC voltmeter.
@lioncurlew2 жыл бұрын
They are what they are...mine has done around 40.hours since new and I will probably change the oil next time I use it. But for the occasional use I put it through, it will probably last many years. Like everything, some will go bang quickly, but you might get a diamond.

I have one of these generators, it always seems to suffer from carb issues. I have replaced the carb and it seems to be running ok for the moment....... The original carb clogged up so I took it apart & cleaner it with carb cleaner thinking that would cure the problem (would only run with Choke on) once reassembled it became a right bitch to start, engine constantly flooding. Seemed like the needle valve was jamming open, lost count of the times I stripped th original carb to try to cure the problem. Almost binned the damned thing. Managed to get a replacement carb and it has now run ok for about 25 hours. Be aware the carb does not have a float bowl, it looks like the needle valve is vacuum operated and is very temperamental. P.S. Running the generator today I had to have the Choke half on or the thing would cut out again. It is run every few days so I don't think it's stale fuel. Will give it a blast with carb cleaner without stripping it to see if that will resolve the problem. It's a shame because when it's running it works well, it's just not reliable !

It was over 12 months ago, we have better camera and audio equipment now. It's a bit of a learning curve if I'm honest

Why is mine draining the battery not charging it
@JimmyTheMower3 жыл бұрын
Really ? You need to plug in a charger between the generator and the battery. It is quite an inefficient way to charge a 12v battery though.

@@JimmyTheMower thanks mate I’m going to have another look at it today I’m parked up in the Welsh mountains and my night heater wouldn’t work last night because the battery would not take a charge thanks for the advice 👍
@JimmyTheMower3 жыл бұрын
Yeah, they won't charge directly from it. I got a smart charger from Aldi for about £20 but you can also get them from Machine Mart, Tool station and maybe even screwfix. Best of luck with it all 👍

Maybe best not to run it indoors due to poisonous exhaust fumes.

These are brilliant if you want to loose all your teeth,the pulley locks up when pulled, bringing it into your face,like all the others of this design,like all the other brands who the manafacturs do for different companies in different colours.

I haven't had that problem yet but I will make sure I'm prepared for it to happen now 🤣🤣🤣

@@JimmyTheMower I now pull it gently about 15 cm to check it's free,each one has locked the pulley when returning after it was fine before.i had only ran it 15 Hours from new , correct oil level & change oil each 20 hours.just be aware,the pulley can lash back out your hand to the unit shattering the side panel to .

Cheers, I unconsciously always pull the pull cord lightly just to make sure everything is moving properly. I never really understood why but I do now. Thank you 👍

Yeah I think it is too. Unless you are in a big field on your own and you can run it on an extension lead about 50m long
