Hi Nick! Cards illustrations and the name (Imperial Settlers) are references to classic PC strategy games called Settlers. Whole idea of this series is building of civilization in micro scale - card game looks almost exactly the same. Settlers games were immensly popular in Germany and Poland.

Great review! We just picked this one up too, after demoing at Gen Con and I agree with pretty much everything you said :)

Great video! I love your reviews but the focus seems a bit off on this one?

I played this last night for the first time and the factions didn't seem balanced. As the Japanese, I couldn't get the production cards as easily as the other factions. I had no chance. The Barbarians won easily and seemed OP.

... Which is interesting, because in some of the games I've played, the exact opposite seemed to be true: the Japanese dominated, and the Barbarian player had a really hard time.

The people I played with had played before and said the Barbarians had won then too. I suppose ultimately the luck of the draw with cards likely has the biggest influence.
