Unsurprisingly the only ones who made it were non-native english speakers from countries with Germanic languages. As an American or Brit travelling that deep inside German would have been basically impossible. They were doomed

There is even a video game that came out on PS2 ,it was one of my favorites as a kid.
@Blex_040Сағат бұрын
According to a Wikipedia, it's a movie from 1963 and "the film depicts a heavily fictionalized version". It also says, "The film made numerous compromises for its commercial appeal, including its portrayal of American involvement in the escape.". So Imperial may not have mentioned it because then he would have to mention how it's inaccurate, which distracts from the real story and that is something that should be avoided in a short KZbin video. I assume it would be another story if it were to be a documentary.
@dimitrijestankovic619922 сағат бұрын
There is movie about this escape from 1963 with Steve McQueen, called The Grat Escape. I guess 3 of them who survived knew german, and that helped a lot.That's why americans and british are caught.

5:34 @IMPERIAL ide like to point out that Australians, New Zealanders, Canadians, and South Africans also participated in this. In fact some played huge roles; like Wally Floody who helped design and engineer the tunnels.

Does someone know how they hid the tunnel from the ferrets if the houses where elevated from the ground?
@cobalt78912 сағат бұрын
The tunnel entrances were out of a shower (concrete section with drain), under a furnace (went through the brick stilt into the foundation), and from the kitchen (also a concrete slab with a drain). They simply chose the few spots where there was no gap under the floor. Ironically the Luftwaffe believed tunneling out of such a camp would be impossible, and even after discovering the first tunnel, foolishly believed that there could not be another (let alone two others!) since digging even one was nearly impossible. I highly recommend watching The Great Escape (1963). It is my favorite film of all time and it is a retelling of this exact event.

My family is from Germany and I am thankful for men like these that saved our homeland from the tyrannical rule of the Nazi's. Today my biggest worry is whether or not I will have time to play video games when I get home, and it's the price in blood many of these men paid that allow me to have such trivial problems. I will never forget their sacrifice, I pray their souls have found peace 😢

Tyrannical, sure. And just look at what you have now. You can’t even frequent a Christmas market safely. Your police who were present there spent their time searching grandmothers for knives. Your govt is more worried about banning a certain Alternative party, rather than making sure attacks like this, or Cologne etc. don’t happen.

I am pretty sure the Gestapo officers didn't just execute the escapees to dissuade further attempts, but because felt personally embarrassed and had been exposed to ridicule. Especially after boasting how their camp was "escape-proof". Anyone can see how that's as sure to backfire as calling a ship unsinkable. Not to mention: Hitler himself ordered their execution, so the embarassment might have gone even further up the chain of incompetence.

they never should have tried to escape. Such a waste of time and betrayal of trust. They had a library and a swimming pool for gods sake. Sounds nice.
@bernardkealey644915 сағат бұрын
And if the allies lost the war they would have all been killed. They were all airmen who had been shot down so had already evaded death at least once before, so taking another chance was better than doing nothing. Planning and doing something - anything - towards the thought of escape was huge booster for morale and a defence against depression. You said “betrayal of trust”; you gotta be kidding me. The only reason they were alive was because of mutual obligations under Geneva conventions. The negotiating parties could have come up with “the obligation to humanely house prisoners of war come with an obligation of prisoners to not try to escape” - notably no one ever ever thought that was a good idea. In all camps on all sides there was a “moral code” and sense of duty to try to escape.
