Note: guys I know the 707 isn't an airbus cut me some slack
A 120~ hour hijacking, a kidnapping and 6 months of terror; the German Autumn was one of the most extensive post-war periods of terrorism on the European continent. This video covers the events of this period, from April to October of 1977, and how Germany grappled with terror and chaos.
This video was quite difficult to research; there's a tonne of conflicting information and I wasn't able to confirm much of it through official reports until late in the script writing process, as some of the documentation I had ordered arrive late. Even then, the "Security Report" produced by the West German government was actually quite limited, so I had to infer some of the points in the video. If you'd like to see the notes/corrections I have made on the Script, please check the Dropbox link below.

The coverage of the hijack itself was great, but what I _really_ liked was you describing the societal impact of this hijack and the RAF in general, and putting it into the German historical context. I think this period is almost forgotten amongst those who didn’t experience it first hand, particularly _because_ nobody wanted to talk about it. Even in german history class it’s barely talked about, and only as a part of the east-/west german conflict. It’s a shame because it is such an interesting period in history of which we can learn so much.

Literally almost every german i know could probably tell you close to the full story of the RAF. In fact, in my eyes the impact on society is the only thing this video didnt mention enough, tho since thats too complicated for most i guess its probably easier to understand like this.

@belabohlen6156 seems like it heavily depends on the state or something. I graduated in 2021 in Lower Saxony and we never talked about it in school. All I know about it is what I've heard in recent media (about Beate Klette and so on), from asking my parents or researching it myself. We've had WW2 history twice in school but have not once talked about this unfortunately. I wasn't even aware of the impact that came afterwards even though I'm generally quite interested in history

I’ll be supporting your content for as long as you bless us with it! Just wanted to mention an important point about GSG9. The operation in 1977 was their first true operation, as they were created in response to the 1972 Munich massacre at the olympic games, where the local policemen weren’t capable of dealing efficiently with terrorism, leading to more casualties. The state was improving their police and military presence, which was part of the public fear of a remilitarized state.

Came here from a Kraut post, gotta say I did not expect the quality of this video. It is a staple that even smaller channels can boast unparalleled quality that punches far above their weight compared to bigger channels. It is also a curious one about an incident that is probably not very known outside of Germany. In school it is also not very covered but something youd always hear about like the Gladbeck Kidnapping but were never really taught about it. My mother was probably more enlightening about the time when she was a university student at the time and we talked a lot about it. Especially that poster is a reminder of the times and how uneasy it felt on top of the Cold War, having a huge threat internationally and a lot of internal turmoil.

I have just been recommended this video and alongside it this channel, for the first time and I have to say that I am honestly amazed. I have been watching documentary style content on youtube for years, from Barely Sociable, Lemmino, disruptv and so on, down to more niche stuff, and I have to say that this channel, despite of its comparably small size, is more than on par with the more established channels that get 10 or 100 times the exposure. The visuals are amazing, from what it looks like the selection of topics covered on the channel is completely unique, but what takes the cake for me is the narration. As a german, I am sort of used to hearing any kind of international content butcher the fuck out of german cities, names and phrases, but I was surprised to learn that the opposite is the case here. At the same time, a flawless and almost accent free english voiceover, as well as nailing the german words in between, makes for an amazing experience watching the whole thing and shows that the creator(s) of the video went the extra mile for something only few would even notice. I certainly will check on this channel again every time I see new content coming out and I am convinced that it is only a matter of time until this channel blows up and reaches so many more people. I was born in 1971 (NYC), so my childhood was the 70s and 80s. My memory of the 70s is rather surreal and foggy, with images on Nixon, Elvis and Jimmy Carter on the news, as well as President Sadat of Egypt. But without doubt, the fear and specter of Airplane Hijackings was everywhere, even in movies and television, both drama/action and comedies!! It felt like every night 10pm News there was always some "terrorist" group with an outlandish long name "People's Socialist Army of Love and Rockets" from Eastern Europe or Middle East hijacking a luxury airline heading for Acapulco, making it land somewhere in Africa (Uganda? Algeria?) and its up to Mossad & the CIA to save the day.

Really appreciate what you've done with the visuals, especially the maps and geolocations of critical stops - helped get a firmer grasp on the timeline, but crucially, is far more engaging than a bog-standard globe/atlas approach would have been 👍

This video is incredibly engrossing and aesthetically absorbing. It reveals a story of a ghost, a ghost now forgotten, that engulfed Germany but also Europe, in a gelid atmosphere of terror and ideological clashes. Kudos to Imperial for another great one. (^-^)

Your description of the societal impact was extremely good. It resonated with me as an American too since the t-word here and especially the date after 9/10 are very taboo subjects and we’ve gone through waves of the dilemma of fear and freedom vs security and control just like Germany.

Very cool video. As a (young) German I already knew parts of the story but this the fullest account I have ever seen in such a komprehensive form. Fun Fact : Ensslin actually studied at my school and the graves of the terrorists who committed suicide at Stammheim are near were I live and I have already visited them.
