As a chilean - it is widely known that the Americans interfered and caused the dictatorial overthrow of Allende. Saying they didnt, or even speculating that they didnt, is frankly insulting to all those who lost their lives due to Pinochet.

This is exactly why the Irish (and every other repressed nation out there) supports Palestine. Those who are oppressed will always see themselves in Palestine, those who do the oppressing will always side with genocide and the facist Israeli state.

"Although it may be tempting to cast Dr. Gudden as the villain of this story" Is that a tempting thing? He was just an instrument to depose the irresponsible king and didn't do anything out of malice.

Hans Wilsdorf (Rolex founder) sent watches to this prison (and others camps, 3000 watches total) for the troops to time the guards for their escapes. If they survived, the troops were to pay him back. After the war, Hans said he wasn't in a hurry to receive payments from the troops. A class act by Rolex!! I've never heard of this in videos featuring the camps, only in articles. Even in the movie, they don't show using a watch timing the guards that i can remember.

‘Escape proof’…. What a stupid way to go about marketing a prison. Surely a prison has either had people escape it or it hasn’t. Escape proof just insults everyone’s intelligence. Even if the complex was designed by God himself to be uniquely escape proof… you don’t go a jinx the big fella by getting all lippy about the design features during the cocktail party launch. Under promise and over deliver, perhaps

It should be noted that prior to wwi smoking and smoking tobacco, in general, was already popular (pipes, cigars) in both Europe and America. Cigarettes however were not.

The Great Escape is undoubtedly an iconic movie though much of it is pure Hollywood. I've visited the actual site at Zagan and immediately noticeable was the sandy earth. How they tunneled through that was nothing less than a miracle. Just the foundations of some building exist though the pool they used to swim in is in reasonable order. What is correct in the movie is the camp commandant who was replaced after the escape, Friedrich Wilhelm von Lindeiner, treated the POWs as fellow officers and at his trial they testified he had followed the Geneva convention. There is a small museum nearby which is also well worth visiting.

You never really covered how they got around the barracks being built above ground, but the presentation and narration was excellent. The supply officer and leadership there must have been really ignorant to allow that much supply be brought in without accounting for everything. That should have been a clear indicator.

So I tried to find out how they did, I assume they camouflaged the tunnel somehow - but I wasn't able to confirm unfortunately, that's why there's a bit of a hole in the explanation. Happy to add it to the corrections section of the script if anyone finds out

Imagine being the guy who misinterpreted the rope tug as a signal and, not only blowing the whole operation, but getting 70+ people executed. I just know that would be me. The entire time crawling through the tunnel I’d be asking other people, “How do I know if a tug is a signal or not?” And the responses would be, “You’ll know.” And then I’d frantically be like, “But what if I can’t tell?!” And everyone would dismiss my concerns because, to them, it’s a stupid question. And then I’d feel a tug, and look back like, “Did you guys see that? Did it tug?” And everyone would shrug like, “I don’t know. Did you feel it tug?” And I’d say, “I THINK so, but what if it was an accident?” And they’d say, “Well if you felt it tug, then go!” And then I’d unconvincingly start climbing just to emerge face to face with a German soldier. Like, OF COURSE that would happen to me

It blows my mind that Germany was so willing to mercilessly kill millions of innocent men, women, and children, but when it came to prisoners, they were intent on following Red Cross regulations and disguising the road side executions as somehow less bad than they already were. Like, the lie that they were killed while trying to escape is not even better than killing them after capturing them again. What does it matter if they follow all of these rules if the entire point of the war is because they were not following rules lol a holocaust is already about as bad as it gets. Who cares if you stop replacing bed frames and furniture? Who cares if prisoners have a basketball court? I really cannot wrap my head around that. If I were at war, I am AT WAR. I’m not arbitrarily following some rules and not others. I’m either following all of the rules or I’m going rogue. It makes no sense to me to be in between
