This is a video about a rarely covered topic, the touristic element of the German Occupation of Paris. It covers the fascinating anecdotes and histories of German life in occupied Paris and how they turned the city into their own rest and relaxation center, but it also covers the disparities between the German occupiers and their French hosts.
I hope you enjoy it.

Hey everyone, as usual you can find the sources linked here and in the description box. This video is almost certainly going to get demonetised but I hope you enjoy it anyway. However, because of this I'm considering setting up a members system where those of you who really want to support me can through KZbin, I would be interested to hear from everyone whether they'd prefer this or the conventional Patreon option. Edit: If my voice sounds different in this video it's because I had to record the audio while I had a slight cold. Sorry! Sources: www.dropbox.com/s/7dyg8x6kpxi0uj1/Paris%20Video.docx?dl=0

When the STO was announced in 43, my great grandfather took his bike and fled from Picardy and went into hiding in Normandy. He was working in a factory during the occupation and had been an artilleryman during the battle of France. Unfortunatly, he never spoke very much about the war and what he did during the occupation so that is all I know.
@jtgd

Life under occupation must have been humiliating and depressing. Especially when the Germans invade with uppity and zealous feelings of superiority. Must have been amazing when learning about D-day and waiting day by day for the front to reach you. Thank you, France for helping us during our revolution. We’re proud to help you guys from the Nazi muddy trench Germany pushed you into. Glad Germany was also freed from that nazi cesspool, after shoving most of Europe into it. All the survivors, including my great uncle are the lucky ones. That war was one of the most inhumane ever. Wouldn’t think even ancient warriors would be able to handle the kind of horrors Modern war can give.

The Eastern Front and the Russians were famously a threat that was held over German soldiers both by their own command and Western Allies holding them as POWs - in the 60 Minutes piece on the Ritchie Boys, one of them told of how since he spoke Russian and they somehow had hold of a Soviet officer's uniform. If an interrogation wasn't going well he'd barge in and demand, in Russian, to be handed his prisoner and that usually got the interviewee (a commissioned officer/Nazi Party member or even SS) to open right up so he could stay in the Yanks' hands.

I cannot remember his name, but I read about that guy and a few days later I actually saw him at a University of Michigan football game on Veterans Day. He was actually a Jew who had been forced to flee Germany shortly before the Holocaust escalated, and accepted a job interrogating German soldiers because he understood the language and culture so well. (I think also understood Russian because his parents were Eastern Europeans who fled to Germany).

Fascinating video, especially since i'm french and grew up in the paris suburbs and never learnt about this. My Grandfather was a mold sculptor (for metal, mater plastic etc) and got drafted for STO. Wonderful and well-informing video. I'm a bit surprise about the remark that "nowhere else could soldiers experience this so-and-so". It is my understanding, that the occupation of Denmark and the Netherlands was quite peaceful for the occupiers as well. Of course, Amsterdam and Copenhagen couldn't match the luxery of Paris, but Denmark was the so-called "Whipped cream-front" and "butter-front" as well because of the peaceful bounty of dairy products and, on the surface at least, easy-going locals.

The animations, script, narration and research made me think that this video was made by a channel which has over a million subscribers. I am genuinely surprised. Great work!

I lived in Germany for a number of years and have friends in both countries. Germans have great respect and admiration for France. (The French respect Germans too...but theirs is a little more grudging.) The term "Leben wie Gott in Frankreich" became "Essen wie Gott in Frankreich" long ago. Dine like God in France. This kind of friendship can be a model for the rest of the world.

This was a deep video. This reminded me of the book “and the went on” by Alan Riding
