"We still don't know shit about Mars" To be fair, Mars was also a major battleground during the Horus Heresy. Imagine a gigantic library which has burned down but much of it has been scavenged. Then, not only was the library burnt down *again*, the mechanisms inside are actively trying to murder you (if you're lucky). As for hope, think about it this way: the administratum worker doesn't care if you live or die. Your commisar doesn't care if you live or die. Actually, scratch that, the commisar will shoot you if you're not willing to climb over that trench. But do you know who cares? Your comrade right next to you. Your loved ones back at home. That little girl who just randomly ran up to your unit and hugged your leg, thanking you for your service. You're not in this for yourself. You're not in this for the Imperium. Do you know why you're in this? For them. Because if you fail, who's going to protect them? Are you ready to climb over that trench now, guardsmen?

"If there's truly no hope, why live?" Spite, pure and simple. One analogy I've heard for the setting is that the Imperium is a man hanging off of a cliff while the other factions stand by and watch. The man could use his energy to hang on tighter and perhaps even save himself, but he's too concerned with giving everybody else the finger to do so. Also, there is certainly hope, and even a god of hope (Tzeentch), and they're evil.

The universe as a all seems hopeless, but sparks of hope are shining in some places. Each one with a vision for a final outcome on darkness. Inquisition embodies well the nihilism part of the Imperium. They are depressed by constant horror and course for pure survival at all costs. By they are only a part of the universe. Some forces are fighting for other causes, like the love of family left behind. They are in fact some of the rebellous forces in the Imperium. Not all rebellion are the work of Chaos or Genestealers, but just people sick of any cruel regime, and wish to live their own way. The deep nature of the universe is not friendly to hope, but it can not firmly kill it. Hope is perhaps not enough to save the galaxy, but at least some people. This with love for cheerished ones are enough to keep trying to fix things... Then the Imperium / Chaos / Orks / Necrons / Taus / Aeldari / Drukarhi / Tyranids come(s). They screw everythings up. But still, hope remains...

"Space Nazis ? How could we EVER make them appear as the good guys ???" Answer : "By comparison" ... The grim dark future of Warhammer 40k seems to portray humans as terrible beings, but this dystopia is sooo hard that every single other faction tries litterally to wipe us all of existence. No democratic regime would be efficient or authoritarian enough to defend Humanity against the terrible things it's facing. Think about Tyranids, devouring everything in their path, leaving only sterile spheres in their way ; think about Ork warbands, multyplying like rabbits and genetically programmed to love war and destruction : they will not stop destroying things untill there's nothing else to destroy ; think about the Chaos Gods, who, in 40K are not just superstitions : these gods DO exist and they have considerable power over any sentient being : no species is immune to their temptations.... And soo many other threats I didn't even mention ! When you think about all this, you come to the horrible conclusion that Humanity has absolutely no choice : if the survival wars that the Imperium fights on all corners of the galaxy were submitted to a vote, if every inhabitant of a planet not directly concerned with these "distant events", or if any person who never truly witnessed the horrors of this Galaxy thought that they are wildly exagerated by government propaganda, or completely fake, and thus would never agree to conscription or war untill their own world is directly threatened (and by then it is faaaar too late !), then there would simply be no Humanity left in this Universe. The thing is : every guardsman/guardswoman fights for their loved ones. Every soldier in the Imperium fights for Humanity because they are brought to the dark reality of this "spitefull Universe" firsthand : they see things that 99,9% of imperial citizen will never see in their lifetime, and they deeply understand the profound meaning of what they are doing, and why. This is why even "simple" guardsmen are heroic in this Universe ; this is why no Starwars stormtrooper would stand a chance against a WH40K guardsman, with or without armour : the Universe that forged the mind and will of any Imperial Guard is faaaar worse than the "light" dictatorship of the Emperor in StarWars. In 40K, an event like Alderaan's destruction is another tuesday morning, before lunchtime. I'll recommend you to read some books in th "Gaunt's Ghosts" series : it focuses around standard guardsmen and it depicts really well their thoughts, mindset etc. And you'll see that everything they do is for Humanity. They are protectors, even when they are as***les ;) And by the way : the original plan of the Emperor was to banish superstition and religious zeal from Humanity, to stave off the Dark Gods, because he knew that they feed on human emotions and fears and that the less you have a religious or superstitious mindset, the less you try to pray to higher powers to obtain what you want in life. In 40K Gods exist, but they are all variations of Satan. After the Horus Heresy (the civil war that brought everything down), the Emperor was considered a God because more and more people came to know that Gods were real, and they were not our friends, so they made their own God, a God who would be on their side. And this is so profoundly human ;)

@@DefinitelyNotDefinitiveGames Thanks for your answer ! :) And yes, The 41st millenium is a dark place to be... During the Horus Heresy, many people with a rational mindset aligned with the traitors because they came to criticise the acts of the Emperor as WE would have done it. The thing is : this Universe is irrationnal in so many ways that a rational mind is an easy prey for devious thoughts. "Blessed is the mind too narrow to feel doubt". The Emperor is th most powerfull psyker in the Galaxy, but in WH40K, the future is not unique, it is an endless mesh of interconnected ways, dead-ends and possibilities. As powerfull as He is, He cannot see every single path, even some that might seem "obvious". But one thing He saw was that Humanity could only survive in the long run under the form of a galaxy-wide empire. Any lesser domain would not survive. Another thing He saw was the rising of the Ruinous Powers, which led Him to the foresight that the action window for building this empire was very narrow. Things HAD to go fast and strong, so sacrifices on the scale of genocides were made so that Humanity as a whole would have the slightest chance of survival. The Emperor fights for Humanity, not for humans, important distinction ;) if he fought for humans, Humanity would be long dead by now ! Another thing you should know about the Emperor : He loved Terra (Earth), and after His total victory over all other warring lords and techno-barbarians, He supervised planet-wide reconstruction of the ecosystem. He was resurrecting the great oceans, long evaporated through atomic warfare, rationalised the cities to make them places of knowledge and enlightenment without devouring the surrounding forests and ecosystems He was reviving all over the planet while no other warlord cared about. He wanted to give back to Humanity the golden craddle in which it was born. The Terra of the 41st millenium is a corrupted hive of crawling humans with no resources left whatsoever : every single piece of food is either synthetic or imported from other planets. It is as far away as it could be from the original dream of the Emperor ;) If you want to know more about the Emperor : kzbin.info/www/bejne/nXvdc4yolsaVm8U&index Cheers !! ;)

I apologize in advance for the length of this reply. Lol To be *completely* fair, humanity didn't really "choose" its current circumstances. The terribleness of the Imperium makes a lot more sense in context. Humanity *had* its Star Trek-style "Golden Age" (roughly 10k to 20kish), where technology and progress made the human experience a veritable utopia. Unfortunately, it fell apart... *HARD*. First, almost literally every alien race humanity ran into turned out to be (and continue to be) giant dickheads, primarily interested in eating, enslaving, or otherwise wiping us out. After a while, xenophobia kind of became the reflexive norm. Second, the super intelligent computers and armies of robotic warriors that made our golden age possible turned on humanity, causing a war far more destructive than anything in even 40k. This is why 40k humanity tends to be so distrustful of advanced technology, and computers in particular. To be frank, they're not wrong to do so, Artificial Intelligence in the 40k universe is more dangerous than in most SciFi. Not only do the bots often have the classic "destroy all humans" mindset, but they are uniquely vulnerable to corruption and possession by demonic warp entities (due to lacking the natural defenses most living beings possess against demonic influence, I think?). Third, the demonic infestation/pollution in the Warp became progressively more and more dangerous as time went on, and as humanity's own psychic potential grew. In 40k something like the Exorcist would be almost cute. A single psychic, or cult, under demonic influence can easily open a Warp portal capable of flooding entire *planets* with an endless horde of ravening horrors. This is why "heresy" is taken so seriously. As if that weren't bad enough, (thanks to the psychotic culture of the Eldar birthing Slaneesh, a new Chaos God of depravity and excess) the festering in the Warp eventually became so great that it was able to spill into real space without even that pre-condition. This resulted in the tearing open of the "Eye of Terror" (an area of space thousands of lightyears across where Hell literally exists in the real world), and the breaking out of warp storms across the galaxy, making it impossible to travel between different star systems for several thousand years. This was the final nail in the coffin for humanity's Star Trek-style "Golden Age," and brought about the almost complete collapse of human interstellar society. Human space for thousands of years after that was basically an interstellar version of "Mad Max." Most high technology was completely forgotten apart from a few relics being held together with bubble gum and duct tape, and savage warlords and psychic sorcerers in league with the demonic terrorized everyone and everything. Where human tyrants, mutants, and monsters didn't do so, aliens did. Even a lot of the tech that was saved during this period wasn't fully understood (cars or gasoline in Mad Max would be a good comparison here)... Leading to the tech that survived often being worshipped as a god in and of itself, most notably by groups like the Mechanicus on Mars. The Emperor fixed this... Somewhat. To be clear, the Emperor isn't a regular man. He's humanity's immortal guardian; basically a minor Warp god. He was created by the psychic Shamans who ruled humanity in pre-history committing mass ritual suicide to merge all of their souls and powers into one entity, because they *SAW* what was coming, and knew humanity would need a protector. The Emperor has been around ever since, watching and guiding humanity from the shadows. When interstellar society fell, he decided to cut the subtlety and take over outright. First taking Earth, and then spreading outwards from there. Even then, however, it was like putting a puzzle back together... After it had been left to bleach in the sun for a few months, half of it had been set on fire, and with about a third of the pieces missing. You can only really expect so much when trying to bootstrap MadMax style barbarians back into the space age. But still... It was a start, and "Big E" had plans in motion to both kickstart human progress, and curb the power of the Warp in human affairs. Until... Of course, the demonic Chaos Gods in the Warp decided humanity was getting too uppity, demonically possessed the Emperor's favorite general/son, and caused the Horus Heresy. The Emperor won, but was put on permanent life support in the process, which completely derailed his longterm recovery plan for humanity. In his absence, the uplifted MadMax barbarians took over government... Which worked out about as well as can be expected. Especially so given the fact that the Imperium the Emperor built has effectively been under siege, both from within, by demonic influenced heretics and more conventional rebels, and without, by genocidal aliens like the Orks and Tyranids, ever since. Civilization has never really been given the chance to "catch its breath," so to speak, and finish trying to put the proverbial puzzle that was pre-collapse society back together. The best most can hope for now is to simply survive, which is a lot easier banding together than hanging apart, no matter how terrible one's government happens to be. Survive, and pray that the Emperor manages to eventually pull a miracle out of his hat. Which he very well might. Fun fact: Given how the Warp tends to work, all the trillions of people worshipping the Emperor as a god might have very well made him *into* a god, possibly capable of even fighting the Chaos Gods on their own terms. This might have even been his plan all along. Time will tell! The Emperor Protects.

Was the whole Shaman stuff brought up in recent times? I don't remember reading anything that contradicts that part, which could very well be the origin of human Perpetuals in general (Big E isn't the only immortal human around, and apart from not dying from old age or the likes, they basically have a respawn mechanic and return from basically everything physical, I think including being reduced to atoms, though I'd have to reread the specific instances we've seen in the novels). Either way, the newer books revealed quite a lot about big E, and hinted at quite a lot more. Most notably how broken he is by his precognitive powers and how badly it interferes with his plans actually having the intended results. He used to be sort of a leader figure among the Perpetuals (it's heavily implied if not outright stated that a lot of our Mythology is based on him and the other Perpetuals), knew really early on just how dangerous Chaos was and had plans to endure it wouldn't ruin humanity. Unfortunately, he developed a nasty mix of distrust even towards his closest allies and a habit of wanting his cake and eating it too. He'd attack and stop dangerous cults, but instead of destroying their library to ensure their chaos corrupted knowledge wouldn't create the next cult (like everybody around him had agreed to do), he'd sack it for himself, to incorporate it into his plans (thinking he'd be able to use t safely). That obviously caused everyone around him to distrust and finally leave him, forcing him to downgrade his plans. Just as an example, the Great Crusade seems to have been planned early on in one form or another, but initially he wanted the other Perpetuals to lead the armies as his near-equals. Only after most of them left him, he had to resort to the Primarch program (which went horribly wrong too, as we all know). And even then, he didn't tell them the truth about his plans, which was a big contribution towards the Horus Heresy. He declared Horus as the warmaster and returned to Terra to work on the next stage, causing the Primarchs to understandably feel betrayed by him. By the end, even the Loyalist Primarchs like the Khan only stuck around because his bad plan was still better than allowing the by then irredeemably insane traitors to take control.

There are "paradise" worlds where people live great lives! Also the age when the Emperor was alive was truly great for the humans. They lived better lives than now and were not threatened of extinction as they are now. Now that the Emperor is lost and 1/2 of their forces turned traitor, instead of falling to despair, they made the Emperor into a "god" to bring some hope. In the long run, humanity's hope is for the Emperor to resurrect and save them from the situation they are in right now. People are actively looking for ways to bring him back. The reason why humans seem so extreme is because they need to in order to fight off the horrible aliens and demons that are attacking them. They can't afford to be nice when galaxy eating gods and other terrible entities are present and have set their eyes on humanity. Since you guys keep bringing up hopelessness in this setting, I highly recommend the Helsreach movie. You can watch it in individual episodes. It actually is very much about hope, the hope of the common man fighting against an alien threat. Even though it is written from an Astartes perspective, hope is very much a theme, along with the main character's struggle with loss of it. It's a very deep story.

40k humanity keeps fighting in large part because, while they are broken in some ways, they are not done. They've survived existential threats multiple times and still survive as a species, and so they keep fighting for the right to exist. I'd like to quote something from the Destiny game series that I feel fits in fairly well with humanity in the 40k universe. It's not an exact quote as I removed some lines to make it fit a bit better. Again, this quote is not from Warhammer 40k, but I think some of it can be used to describe humanity and the existence of hope in the 40k universe. " _I knew a man once. Some claim he was a monster, and I agreed for a very long time. This man, clad in black and misshapen by the weight of his sins, professed to wield hope as a weapon, to offer it as a crutch, a beacon he saw as false promise. "Nothing dies like hope," he'd say. And was right. The loss of hope stings like no other. But he knew something else-a truth he would not share, a truth muddied by his words and deeds and the grim menace of his presence. And that truth?_ _Hope is eternal._ _It may fade. It may get lost in the pain and suffering of existence. But it's always there. Somewhere. Hidden maybe, in plain sight or far from view._ _When you are at your lowest. When hope has faded and you're all alone-in the world, inside your head. When the odds are stacked and despair has taken hold. Remember your fire. It's always there. Once sparked, once the anger-once fear-has lit the fuse, the flame will remain, always-a beacon signaling to eternity that you are here and you will stand, no matter the obstacle. And, in the end, if you so choose, it won't be whispers and shadows that save you-that corruption seeks only to abuse. No-_ _It will be your first loud words, and your enemies' last._ " Each human in the Imperium has a duty; to themselves, to each other and to the Emperor. The duty to never give up. And only in death does duty end. Here's where I got that quote from: www.destinypedia.com/Lore:Letters_from_a_Renegade

In fairness, not all parts of the Imperium are awful, you can get some R&R on a cardinal world, or a garden world where it's all paradise and recreation. But that's the slightly more secure inner parts of the imperium. Plus they could still get attacked or spawn some daemonic cult that causes an chaos invasion, it's not like they're immune to the threats.

So there was a rather interesting conversation towards the end of this video about hope in the 40K universe and I'd love to throw my 2 cents in here! 😁 So, I think its worth remembering that this grim, horrible repressive Empire is all that humanity has known in this universe for 25,000 years of this history. WE know as an audience that it's all bad because we live in a world of freedoms! For the citizens of the Empire, all of this is just Tuesday 😂 Hope has become faith and while WE recognise that it's a twisted repressive nightmare of a religion that was never meant to be, for the Imperium it is a form of hope. Hope that the Emperor in all his power will see us through the darkness. That his Astartes, his "Angels" will protect us. It's an insane amount of indoctrination sure, but its also coupled with sheer survival instinct! Humanity is under constant threat. The Xenos is a dangerous foe. The Dark Gods of Chaos are constantly conspiring. So as horrifying as it is, the Imperial system of religious zeal and militant pseudo-fascism has become the best chance we have to endure as a species in the fictional 41st millennium. I hate every word of that sentence because of my own personal perspective, created by the world we live in. But as we all know, in the grim dark future, there is only war 😂 Keep up the great work guys! Awesome content! 👌

Yes the Imperium is not a great place to live. The Emperor had some good goals, he was actually trying to bring about more knowledge and reasoning. He was also trying to get rid of religion, so he'd be rolling in his golden throne knowing that the entire imperium was now worshipping him as a God. Also, you are raised in the Imperium with lines of thinking along this, well unless you become a heretic, "It is better to die for the Emperor than to live for oneself!" But yeah, lots of corruption within the imperium machine. You guys should watch the Total War: Warhammer 3 Cinematics, especially the latest one 'The Dawn of Grand Cathay' Which revealed Cathay for the first time ever(Previously had only been heard about in lore snippets). Though the Total War; Warhammer is based on Warhammer Fantasy and not Warhammer 40k, but both have similarities.

1: Hope is not good. There is no "hope" in the 41st Millennium. People live, because most don't have it in them to just commit suicide. 2: Horus was wronged. 3: The Emperor never ushered in a "golden age", except for himself. He's responsible for more murders than the Earth has a population, and with few exceptions, ALL HUMANS ARE SLAVES. If you die, as a previous video you watched stated: "you will not be missed".

And even worst was Horus was beating him in there battle to the point of the state he was gonna be in but he loved him so much that he dint strike him even when he was about to kill him. Also to the “is hope a good thing or a bad thing in this universe?”….I’d say the more the expection of living in this world you either hope you survive to live another day or accept death!

Regardless of how grim the setting is, there is "hope" in the imperium- you'll just very rarely hear it being extolled from the position of the imperium directly. It usually manifests in the inter-personal experiences usually extrapolated in the pages of the books that flesh out the universe. The "Gaunts Ghosts" stories/novels by Dan Abnett I think iterate that the best.
