I still remember how blown away I was back then by how crisp this game looked on Dreamcast. The Hi-Res Textures, Anti Aliasing and Smooth Framerate really sucked you into its cartoon world - when it comes to presentation, I'd even pick this entry over its direct successor Rayman 3.

This game is definitely one of my favorite games of all time for several reasons: The controls are tight and the gameplay is smooth, there're no frustrating moments in the game, and the game introduces enough new elements to keep the experience from getting stale. By the way, there are some fundamental differences between each version of the game. Here's a brief summary of them: N64 & PC: These are the original versions of the game released in 1999. I can't say what the controls are like for PC, but on N64, the analog controls are quite silky smooth. PS1: This is what I consider one of the worst versions of Rayman 2. Although it has a few enhancements such as the remastered music and some extra content like an unlockable prototype level from the original 2D build of Rayman 2, there was so much noticeable amount of content cut from the game. And because of the PS1's graphical limitations, the graphics aren't as smooth as the N64 original. The game also includes English voice-acting, but it's terrible quality. Dreamcast: The one you're playing right now. This is regarded as one of the best versions of Rayman 2. Not only does the game have all the content from the N64 game, but it also adds some new content on top such as the unlockable mini-games. The graphics have also been enhanced to support 640x480 resolution in anamorphic widescreen at 60 fps. PS2: This version is also considered one of the best versions of Rayman 2. It's a full remake of the original with many fundamental enhancements. The previously 2D backgrounds and level assets have been upgraded to full 3D backgrounds and platforms. The Hall of Doors level select screen has been replaced with a full open-world hub level you can fully explore and collect more lums. Finally, many of the levels have been altered with more difficult platforming and more enemy variety. However, there are a noticeable amount of load times, and the frame rate has been downgraded to 30 fps instead of 60 fps. I can't say much about the handheld versions of Rayman 2, but the less said about them, the better.

I have the DS version as well. I think it's because since it only has a D-pad, the controls aren't as good as the versions on systems that have analog stick controllers. I never tried using the touch controls because I know that playing a 3D platformer with touch-only controls is a miserable experience.
@FastTquick6 жыл бұрын
I forgot to mention that in the PS2 version of Rayman 2, the English voice acting is greatly improved over the PS1 version.
@implantgames6 жыл бұрын
That's disappointing the PS2 port is only 30 frames per second :(
@tripletomtv99586 жыл бұрын
I had the DS Version of Rayman 2 and let's just say you better skip out on this one. It's exactly like the N64 version but with a far worse soundtrack than the N64 already offered and the framerate is just abyssmal, reaching levels of about 15fps and 20fps in most cases. And you control it with a DPad. Simply put, the N64 version isn't meant to be played that way. Also the other control scheme where you use the DS's stylus on the touch screen to control Rayman just feels awkward and shouldn't be used either. This is what i call the worst version of the game, yes even the PS1 version is better despite the cut content and pretty bad voice acting. At least it controls way better even without the Dualshock controller, since the controls were build around the use of a DPad and not everyone had a Dualshock controller at the time. And the soundtrack is just awesome.

FastTquick - I'd only ever played the N64 version, and i have always loved how the voices are done, with the charming and hilarious nonsense-speak. So when i went back to play the PSN PS1 version on my PS3, i really did not like it. At all. Sure, part of it is that it's just not good voice acting. But mostly it's that it ruins a lot of the magic of the game-- the garbled voices add so much to the fairy tale, otherworldly aesthetic that permiates the whole game. So yeah, i'd have to say no thank you to the voice acting, whether it's good or not. Although eventually i'm going to give Revolutions a try (it too is sitting on my PS3, as of yet unplayed). But i do agree on the soundtrack of the PS1 version-- the music's quite nice on that one. As for the portable versions, i recently picked up Rayman 2 Forever for the GBC (which i'm actually playing on my GBP/GC) and have played just a bit of it. So far so good. I really love the 2D pixelated look of the old platformers, so it looks great, even though the zoomed-in camera and large sprites take some getting used to. But, even though i've only played a little past the first level, the gameplay seems fun and challenging, and not at all too difficult. Makes me want to play the first Rayman now, which i've somehow missed all these years.

This is probably one of my all-time favorite games or at least one that I hold very highly. I love the mystical atmosphere and the sense of adventure it creates. It always made me feel like I was the hero, exploring this mysterious world and reawakening its strength. It was also very well-made and was a joy to play, and even though it did have its weaker elements, they were never bad or frustrating enough to make stop playing. I've always wanted to see a new 3d entry in the series, one that brings back the fantasy-adventure vibe and a story that's maybe not complex but had weight. I also have to say that this is one of the best reviews I've seen of this game. I think you really went into detail on why the game works and even touched on its faults yet still explained why they're not much of a hindrance. Very nice work.

Superb retrospective of one of my favourite games over the years, having bought it on PS1, PS2, Dreamcast and 3DS ... and have played all the other console versions in one way or another lol. While my best friend was playing Mario 64 and Banjo Kazooie on his N64, I was enjoying Croc: Legend of Gobbos and Rayman 2: The Great Escape on my PS1 ... while his N64 games are still recognised as classics today, my alternative experiences were already being berated as underwhelming knock-offs by many, in comparison ... but I still enjoyed them. The game has a wonderful blend of visual style, charming characters, solid gameplay mechanics and (re-)playability.

Back when this game first came out I rented it for Dreamcast, made it to the final boss but had to quit since it was time to return the game. Dang! I really liked the game back then, but watching it now in your video, something immediately looked off to me. Its appears as if the game environments scrolls at 60FPS, but all characters move at 30 FPS (a holdover from PS1 / N64 perhaps). It makes the game look kind of jarring because of that. But no matter, I want to give the game another playthrough in the future, and your review only reaffirmed that! Good review as always, and keep it up!

The Dreamcast version has more consistent framerate & better picture quality than the PS2 version. Yeah, PS2 ports of Dreamcast games (e.g. Rayman 2, MDK2, Headhunter) were not all that great, despite the fact thre PS2 TECHNICALLY had more processing power. The devs *really* had to dedicate themselves to harnessing that PP.

I remember thinking Rayman 2 on N64 was going to be an N64DD launch title because of how expansive and emersive it was going to be. Well, imagine my surprise when it was in fact non other than the N64 console itself providing all the power and material for the game without the need for an add-on. Games like Rayman 2(beside the Zelda games and others) prove the N64 is more than capable of handling big and expansive games without the need for any hardware add-ons like the DD! All that you really need are the right developers and the magic and wizardry in programing and coding that make said games possible.

Rayman 2 is one of my favorite games, not sure if it's my most favorite, but it's there, but I can easily say it's one of my most Nostalgic games, the controls are nice, the difficulty is easy (which was good for my younger self), and the memorable (to me) music. Rayman 2 isn't just one of my favorite games, but its my favorite Rayman game (alongside Origins), the first one was nuts with its difficulty, the third one was.... Alright, IMO, Legends is pretty damn good, but they just can't match this one for me, maybe it's nostalgia, maybe it's something else, but this game is one that shaped my childhood, thus putting the Rayman series close to my heart. Did I mention the memorable music and Nostalgia? Probably.

This game desperately needs a remaster!
@RamblePrism6 жыл бұрын
I see what you mean, but I have to disagree! The Spyro games don't 'need' a remaster either following that logic. But they look way more appealing to me now than they ever have, and I might even try that series for the first time now. Apart from how wonderful it is to see an old game with updated graphics, it also reintroduces a (possibly old and forgotten) franchise to a new audience. I would also much prefer a completely new Rayman game, but I also know that's not going to happen any time soon considering the lack of interest Ubisoft has in the franchise right now. If the inevitable success of a remaster can convince them, then I'm totally on board for it!
@RamblePrism6 жыл бұрын
Indeed, and Tropical Freeze is also a fantastic game so it deserves all the love it can get ; ) Yeah there's definitely a difference between remasters and lazy ports of games that released only a few years ago with minor tweaks. The lazy ones have no reason to exist (unless it's for a platform that offers something unique, like the Switch with its combination of portability and decent hardware power). I do agree with you on that one, Rayman 2 wouldn't need any HUGE changes or improvements to the controls for example. Remasters work especially well for titles that are just a tad older, when the technology just wasn't quite there yet to build exactly what the developers had in mind.

Another great review! I sadly never owned a Dreamcast so it looks like I really missed out because I had this game on PS1 and, well, it was alright but had some problems. When it was remade for the PS2 I was all over that and saw the greatness this game had. While I wasn't a big fan of the open world feel most everything else was good. It looks like I probably would have liked this version more. The silly voices like Banjo Kazooie and a level select would be great. I wish more platformers had this kind of world, bright and cartoon like with a dark story to it.

And its a shame too cause the levels themselves are unique but the bosses are tedious and some of the hazards in the game are very cheap and can sometimes be overwhelming. I don't mind hard games as long as it is fair like megaman or donkey kong. I shouldn't have to be forced 100% the game on my first try just to beat the game. It should be optional.

You can't make videos this long on games I love so much! I'm gonna just end off sounding crazy because I have so much to comment on when it comes to Rayman 2! That was a great video! I love Rayman 2, it's probably my favorite 3D platformer of all times. It was developed for the N64 hardware first but ported to PC and Dreamcast second. I first played the PC version as a kid and loved it. I have played this game on so many platforms over the years and beaten it 100% on them. So the game feels a bit to easy for me at this point. The "worst" version is suppose to be the ps1 version because it introduced the awful voice acting and it has cut content, but considering the hardware it's probably the most impressive version. The most disappointing version is the 3DS port. It was suppose to be an enhanced port of the Dreamcast version (which is generally considered the best port) but instead it was a buggy mess with a gamebreaking glitch that stopped you from collecting the 1000'th lum. It's garbage, but the part where you water ski is a little bit easier because you can judge the distance better when using the 3D on the 3DS. I love the dreamcast version! No awful voice acting, the graphics are like the once on PC from my childhood (unlikes the ps2 version) and it runs butter smooth. (Also has a few secret multiply games if you go back on the first map there's a secret room with mini games) Btw I noticed some cut scenes from 5:02 that I don’t remember being in the Dreamcast version. Did you use the once from the PS2 version? Or maybe the Pal versions don’t have those.

Glad you enjoyed the video! All of the footage is from the Dreamcast version, it was English though so maybe it was cut out of other territories?
@Animated__Freak6 жыл бұрын
Well I do live in Sweden but the game is English otherwise. But it is the PAL version, maybe it came out first (Ubisoft is a french studio after all) so maybe it was included just for the NTSC regions. Now I want replay it all to find out xD

Great review! I can't wait to play this one, though most likely I'll be getting the PS2 version since I have a PS2, not a Dreamcast, and far as I can tell, it stands alongside the DC version as the best version of the game.

DjKiwi Consoles: PC N64 PS1 PS2 DC Portables: GBC iOS NDS 3DS The Dreamcast is usually considered the best version, with the PS2 being a close second. The portables are all okay at best (besides the GBC I am not familiar with it, I just know it exists, but I do know it is essentially a completely different game). The N64 and PC versions are considered to be good and the PS1 is the worst of the home console versions.

It's weird Rayman 3 got an HD upgrade for PSN/Xbox but not Rayman 2.
@kdkseven6 жыл бұрын
I have the PS1 version of Rayman 2 on my PS3 through PSN. Never really played much of it though-- still prefer the N64 version, though the music has a slight edge on the PS1 version. I've played a tiny bit of the GBC version, as i just picked it up for my GameBoy Player/GameCube, and it plays nicely. It looks a lot like Rayman 1, which is good because i love the look of the old platformers, but the large sprites and closed in view take some getting used to. I'm looking forward to really getting into it.

Just a heads up, but there's an 'HD' version of Rayman 3 that has a lot of annoying bugs!

As much as i loved (and still love) Rayman 2, i was quite disappointed with Rayman 3. It seemed contrived, without all the exploration, and the atmospheric, magical environments of 2 just weren't there. I haven't played it since it came out though, so maybe i should give it another shot.
@RamblePrism6 жыл бұрын
I'd say definitely give it another shot, there's a lot more 'magic' and atmosphere in it than you'd initially expect!

MarkProductions - I will! I'm currently about halfway through Rayman 2 on my N64 (just got it HDMI modded, and it's beautiful), but i ordered Rayman 3 for my GameCube last night after this discussion, so i'll be getting back to it very soon.

I played Rayman 3 before Rayman 2, as my childhood friend liked Great Escape more, I think Hoodlum Havoc was my favourite. I love both. Both have different tone and style but in both we have same likable and rememberabke characters, beautiful worlds filled with secrets, story which keeps you on to the end... Not to mention great music, level design and great controls ;) Recently I've revisited both of them after at least 5 years since last time (maybe more) and I had amazing time with both of the games! I think main difference in gameplay between 2 and 3 is combat. In 3 you've got much more variety of enemies, often they attack in groups while almost all battles in 2 are 1vs1 duels. Also more bosses, more innovative and challenging than bosses from 2, and what is great, you can repeat battles with them what was not possible in Great Escape (at least on PC) Looking forward fot analise of Rayman 3 ;)

Great review as usual. Hated that damn plum riding in the lava level, apart from that the game is fantastic. I still need to get round to playing Hoodlum Havoc sometime.

Thanks man! The plum was a lot better on my second play through, still clumsy though, especially when you need to smash through a door.

You say it's not a collect-a-thon, but then you describe a lot of stuff that has to be collected, to progress the game, as well as optional collectibles including a new collectible just for this version. Can you elaborate on your definition of collect-a-thon ;so that Rayman doesn't qualify? Is it only the fact that there are fixed end points to each level?
@implantgames5 жыл бұрын
It's a good question and a fair point. I would say when the main component of a game is collecting a certain amount of widgets before a stage can be completed would be a good starting point. Meeting lum requirements that an average gamer would probably obtain through normal gameplay would be on the other end of the spectrum.
@Chaklun966 жыл бұрын
Yeah I played this one 2 years ago and it was great :) I also played Rayman 3 when I was a child, and I wouldn't be able to say if it's as good gameplay-wise but the atmosphere is just so fun and charming! Also thank you, your reviews are great and it's really cool to see someone focusing on platformers :D I would love to see you review Rodea the Sky Soldier (Wii version) someday ^^"

There was only one port that actually added new features, Rayman 2: Revolution on the PS2, best played with the 60FPS cheat code in an overclocked emulator since it only runs at 30 otherwise. Rayman DS was just a buggy port of the N64 version and Rayman 3D was a port or the Dreamcast version without the minigames and with a bug requiring the player to use glitches to get a yellow lum. I believe the mobile port is the same but with the glitch fixed.
