Wow, you didn't like the combat? That might be my favorite part of this one. It always feels very satisfying to me. Though... you don't really take me as the type to really enjoy that sort of thing anyways. You don't really do shooters, do you? I guess that's where my appreciation for it comes from. Anyways, great review as always.
@FrameRater6 жыл бұрын
Also, "flying enemies require a curved punch" ... all enemies require a curved punch. Hoodlums will twirl their guns at you which makes them dodge your punch. I'm not sure why you said that given in your footage you're doing curved punches even against land enemies (as you should be).
@FrameRater6 жыл бұрын
"Most enemies need to be hit with a charged punch", no...?
@implantgames6 жыл бұрын
I enjoy first person shooters, I've reviewed a few on the channel: Halo, Dead Man's Hand, Darkwatch, Black, Land of the Dead, even bad ones like Classified: The Sentinel Crisis. Glad you enjoyed the video! However not all enemies required a curved punch. Many land enemies can be hit with a charged fist which is useful if you want to jump their attack rather than strafe (like during The Machine). And of course most of them can be kicked.
@FrameRater6 жыл бұрын
Hmm... well maybe a charged hit can bypass the weapon spin, I've never tried that since it's easier to just do a curve. Also yeah, I just realized that you also do shooters. Hmm. Well, good video anyhow.

During combat you're supposed to jump and roll to evade projectiles, which is what makes it so fun, and I didn't see you do much of that in the footage. That said the game never teaches you those moves, similar to most of Jak and Daxter's moveset.

I personally love Rayman 3 nearly as much if not just as much as 2. While the combat isn't great, there's at least a bit more variety than 2 had in terms of the enemies; the alternate gameplay segments also do a mostly (crazy shoe) good job of mixing things up without overstaying their welcome, and in general the game felt somewhat more challenging than 2. It's just a shame that we still haven't gotten a 3D follow up. There was the outsourced Rayman 4 which was cancelled and of course Raving Rabbids which was inexplicably morphed into a minigame collection. At least Ancel has said he wants to make another one when he's finished with BG&E2, whenever that is...

Rayman 3 is definitely a better game than most people give it credit for. The platforming is just as flawless as the previous game and the level design is excellent. While the combat is a bit sloppy, I love how the new powerups spice it up a bit and keep it from being too shallow. However, I do agree that the game has fundamental flaws. I think the game's biggest problem is the game's change in tone from dark and whimsical to light-hearted and comedic. Some of the jokes like the references to video games do hit home, but the game's attempts at adult humor like some of Andre's taunts to Rayman and the witch boss's references to bondage at the end of the Bog of Murk level feels out of place in a Rayman game. I'm also not a fan of how the scoring system works in the game and how you unlock minigames. Finding ways to do platforming as fast and precise and maximizing the time on your powerups to collect gems as quickly as possible to get a high score can make gameplay satisfying more difficult, but it becomes frustrating when you try to unlock the last few minigames by getting the highest scores on each and every level in the game. As for the minigames themselves, they're a mixed bag. A few of them such as the balloon platforming game and the FPS target shooting game with Count Razoff can be fun, but the rest of them control poorly and are just not fun to play in general. By the way, the GameCube version has one extra minigame that requires people to hook up a Game Boy Advance to their GameCube for cooperative play. However, considering you need those things to even play the game, it's just not worth it. Finally, if I've got some extra info on the different versions of Rayman 3, I'd choose going for the 6th-gen originals over the HD editions on Xbox 360 and PS3. Though the graphics in the HD editions are a bit improved, there are some noticeable control and graphical glitches one would notice if they'd played the originals. In one particular example, the textures on the pirate models in the infamous Last Supper easter egg are practically broken. Ubisoft also took out some of the fairy's dialogue featuring her saying "Oh my god!"
@MaximeFrjq6 жыл бұрын
I recommend playing it on PC, because the controls felt just perfect, and pressing several buttons at the same time weren't close to being as sloppy as on the console (+ iirr you didn't mention the "rolling" move that's pretty cool in combat). I also think Rayman 3 is being disregarded because of the previous games, especially Rayman 2. The change in atmosphere was maybe a bit harsh, but the incredibly diverse universe and gameplay of Rayman 3 couldn't match with the same dark storytelling tone... And keeping that tone would have made the comparison with Rayman 2 even worst. I personally think Rayman 3 was a great renewal and enhancement to the series, plotwise, gameplay-wise and soundtrack-wise, but to each his own, I guess.

I loved the mech section because of the variety it presented to me as a young kid. I liked this level a lot as a kid because I felt like the battle was just a comedy skit. One guy runs from the ‘big boss’ who can’t be attacked with regular moves. All of a sudden a weapon appears. The two guys actually RUN to it (not your usual game mechanic)with the boss trying to destroy it. When Rayman gets the weapon, the roles are changed and the mouse now chases the cat. After defeating the boss, yes you can say it’s a waste-of-time, but it was just so cool as a kid that I got to be the ‘big guy’ in the situation. Yes it’s overpowered but it was really fun just playing the role of the ‘boss’ of the level getting rid of the ‘players’. It’s kind of like how people love the concept of ‘Godzilla’, a big monster destroying a large city, spreading rubble and causing chaos. Kinda like that😆. But hey, it may just be me.

Great review, well written that really delved into the nooks and crannies of the game's design. For the most part I really enjoyed the combat, most of the time there many enemies on the screen attacking you simultaneously, making each confrontation fast-paced, and the enemy variety is really unheard of, there are tons of different enemies, most of them feel really different from one another. In short, keep up the good work!

I'm sorry, dude, but WHAT? Holding a trigger button AND a face button and releasing the face button is hard for you? That's like, playing CoD or any first person shooter, and after aiming and firing, you release the aim button by accident and continue shooting. No, that actually never happens. The lock on mechanic is actually pretty good in this game for it's time, it basically aims wherever you want. If an enemy is in your "sights", pressing the lock on button WILL lock on to that enemy. Rayman isn't a sniper ya know, he can't lock of to far away enemies. Press a direction, then lock on, and Rayman will lock on to that enemy, even if there's multiple enemies in a row (Tower of Leptys stage 1 intro hello)
@domscards6 жыл бұрын

Thoroughly enjoyed your review. I love how descriptive your sentences are and the way you take into account level flow and difficulty; you’re better at reviews than game journalists today in fact. Also, there’s a way to force Xbox games that only run in 480i to run in 480p: when on the Xbox dashboard, pull and hold both triggers then click both thumbsticks. This will stay active until you do the process again or if the system has its power cord disconnected for some time. Games that already support 480p or higher won’t be downgraded either, they will work perfectly fine.
@implantgames6 жыл бұрын
Is that so? I'll have to try that with Battle for Bikini Bottom... And thank you for the kind words!

You’re welcome. I also recently found out that Rayman can do a dodge roll; if you press the L button while moving or strafing Rayman will roll in the direction the control stick is tilted (at least for the GameCube version I played). I tried it out during combat and it did make dodging projectiles a little easier (and you can actually dodge through them because you have I-frames), but getting hit is still a problem and having to operate three buttons to do combat maneuvers feels clumsy.

Hey, you finally did it! I can't say I ever had problem with locking on, combat was fine for me. I also enjoyed the shoe chasing, but the last time I played it probably took me half the time it did on my first playthrough. The egg carrying with the ghosts was probably my least favorite 'Minigame', just felt like wasted time. The last phase of the final boss was a real pain as a kid, probably took me a few hours to beat. Think I first tried it on my last playthrough though.

the issue is you're holding the target button way before you approach the enemy which won't register, you have to do it whe nyou're closer, and everytime you defeat an enemy re-position before targetting again, that way the combat is reliable 100% of the time

While I mostly agree with you and enjoyed this review I feel there are two points you totally overlooked: - You get a 5 stars rank at the end of every level based on your score. Trying to get the highest score possible really changes the way you approach Rayman 3 level design due to its combo system and can be a really fun post-endgame challenge. - With said high scores you unlock a lot of silly stuff: from minigames (some are OK, some are terrible and there is one for the GC version which is absolutely fantastic) to little movies which I think are really charming.

The final boss from what I gather is an unholy fusion of Reflux, and Andre. They are using the power of Leptys but it's not the Leptys himself. Even the final form of Andreflux as I like to call it has wings but they are more bat like then bird like.

ok, real quick: A. I can understand your issues with a Camera controls being problematic during fights, especially during fights with multiple enemies. A big thing you didn't talk about was how the Camera can be reset to raymans current facing position by simply tapping the lock on button, meaning no need for R-stick camera. B. The Shoe Car sections are not difficult at all?...in fact, their are strategies to win them easily Simply drive parallel to a shoe and force it to hit a wall, you get atleast 2 hits in once you turn towards it. C. Your gonna complain about a 7 minute Boss ?....really?...what did you expect? 2 minutes for a Boss fight? D. The Battleship portion is what made me come down here...you don't need the camera for the battleship portion. its Plain as day that the enemies are on the mini-map to the left side, marked in red. The game literally brings up a secondary window so don't act like its something you didn't notice. E. Globox is considered pretty dumb in this and future titles, its kinda a given that he could considered Andre a pet. F. Complain about a 7 min boss

Another superb retrospective. While various ports of Rayman 2 have been my go-to 3D platformers for years, from PS1 to 3DS, Rayman 3 just never had the same appeal for me. It's definitely replaced charm with a more childish humour, and the gameplay feels more functional than engaging (though it has some good ideas in places). It's a solid sequel with a nice visual upgrade, but as a whole it's just not in the same league as Rayman 2 in my opinion.

How could you NOT mention the minigames that get unlocked as you play? this is the main reason you need high scores. Plus extra videos about Hoodlums

I do not agree with you because the combat in Rayman 2 is too simple and in Rayman 3 it's much more advanced. But i guess we all have different opinions. Personally i think Rayman 3 has better replay-value than Rayman 2 and it holds up much more at least when it comes to the graphics.

Everytime you say buTTons i feel strange LOL especially cuz sometimes you say it normally. It's worse than the way AVGN says "buddens" xD but i love your vids so whatever

Rayman 3 is still good, but I do think that 2 did the combat system a bit better, and I totally agree with you on the shoe car segments. I have never like the Shock Rocket as I always it found hard to control the thing.. That said, Hoodlum Havoc is still a very competent game. The Longest Shortcut, & The Desert of the Knaaren were my favorite levels!

i personally rayman's 2 combat system kinda just feels slugish, and boring in a way that you only lock camera, left right left right jump and shoot, and that's it. With rayman 3 you have the red aim rings that pop up and that allows you to be more dynamic and not constantly stuck camera wise with the trigger to the enemy. like you can charge your attack while jumping and running and avoiding shots from differnt enemies and it makes it so satysfying aswell when you shoot after charging and the game gives you these cool sound and visual clues that you destroyed them. For me rayman 2 could exist without any fight, you can't really run and charge at the same time in that game, enemies you usually encounter in like ones and twos, there is lack of cool gimicks with them imo Rayman 3 is an upgrade in that department.
