Implementing "The Secret Stories"

I recently purchased "The Secret Stories" to use in my 3rd grade classroom. I posted about them on Tiktok, and it got some attention! I've had several people ask about how I use them, how to start, etc. This video is a very informal overview of how I started using them in my classroom. I've only had them for two weeks but cannot say enough good things about this resource!

My is completely random! Some organize by vowels, r controlled, etc. Do whatever works for you!!

So helpful! I'm getting the opportunity to teach third grade this year and have been looking for resources to address different needs in my classroom. How long does it take you to get through a story whole group? I wanted to maybe use this for small groups as well.

It takes a minute or two to tell a story! They are super quick. You’ll reference the posters a lot when you model writing, when students find stories, introduce a new vocab word, etc. the telling of the stories is very quick!

I would love to get the kit you got but I am not sure I have the money. Could I get by with the flashcards? Not ideal I know but I am not sure I can do more. Do you also have a word wall and a sound wall too?

The flashcards are too small for them to see from all over the room, so it's not ideal. But it could be a good place to start! Maybe get the flashcards, and then put in a Donors Choose for the full kit? I do not have a sound or word wall!

No order! Some people do vowels, vowels teams, r controlled, etc. but you don’t need to!

As long as they are up you are good! I ended up moving mg room around so I could put them up front. I started with them off to the side but changed that!

I don’t… I have send the porta pics home with a few families and their child tells them the stories. They’ve asked for any they didn’t know or understand.

I don't get this. So Secret Stores aren't decodable books that students hold and use? HOW do they learn the sounds then? Do you just have a book, read aloud to the students, and they start connecting them to other texts? This makes no sense. However, they're very popular. I don't want to spend money on this product until I really understand its purpose.

Secret stories are just fun stories to teach phonics sounds. It gives the kids a reason "why" letter combinations say what they do. For example, sometimes the letters t and h don't say "t" and "h" instead they say "th". The story says "t and h" are naughty and they should never sit together. You know kids that shouldn't sit together right? They don't do what they are supposed to. Well t and h are like that...They should never sit together because every time they sit together they stick out their tongue and say "th". Look in your book. Let's find out if "t and h" are sitting together. I bet you will find them. Kids look in their book (any book) and find "th". Then practice saying the "th" sound and practice reading the words they found in their book. etc...I teach first so it's a little different than third grade. But these stories are supposed to be a "hook" to help kids remember phonics sounds that will help them read and spell.
