Nice video. I think the $ 179 yearly is a bit high. For V-ray users, another and cheaper way get high poly models into a scene is using proxies.

Thanks! Downloaded demo, but an 8,000 polygon file won't seem to reduce to anything less. Have any settings that might help?

I am a follower of your video. I am facing a problem, unable to render downloaded models from 3d warehouse in Vray where as interior walls and floor is rendering. Please suggest.

I agree with others that this is a nice plugin but too expensive. The subscription business model that so many app developers have moved to doesn’t leave much room in my monthly budget for a plugin at this price point.

Thanks for sharing. Maybe the material is lost because new faces are created when the polygon size is reduced and the IV is lost. What happens with groups and components when reducing polys?
@Thesketchupessentials5 жыл бұрын
Hmmm...not really sure - I was going to reach out to the guys at Mindsight and see if they knew - it seems to maintain mapping with imported models, so I'm not sure why it would lose it on a model that's already in SketchUp. Components stay active - their functionality is retained, which is a nice feature
@mind.sight.studios5 жыл бұрын
The reason is probably that the car model has reversed faces. Skimp can maintain the front side material but not the back side

This makes a bunch of sense - going back and looking at that particular example model, that seems to have been the issue - thanks! :)

your videos allays help me:)Thank you!But about this plug-in for me, is not very well done, the materials are always disappearing and me that I am new in the design sphere learning sketch up it is very expensive when you have to pay also all the rest like license,vray and many extensions and if you have to use also 3dmax in case......

Just tried it. I'm a Mac user. I desperately need an extension like this. Doesn't import 3d Max models (among other popular formats ) unless your on a PC. Wtf? Also Sketchup crashed on numerous attempts to import the model. So frustrating!!!
@mind.sight.studios5 жыл бұрын
Hi Shelley - thanks for checking out Skimp! Just to clarify, we were unable to provide 3ds support for Mac for initial release but we plan to add full 3ds support in the future. All other formats are supported for both PC and Mac users. We see that you contacted our Help Desk about the crash and we have since responded. Thank you for bringing this to our attention. I am confident that if we can get a copy of the model from you, we should be able to track down the cause of this issue and release a fix. Skimp was beta tested by many Mac users and we found that crashes were extremely rare and we will do our best to figure this one out!

I always wondered how every Tom, Tom and Tig managed to supply extensions for free?
@Thesketchupessentials5 жыл бұрын
Sometimes people create extensions as a hobby, which the rest of us benefit massively from (Fredo, TIG, Thom Thom, etc). However, I think it's a bit unfair that just because some people create extensions for free, people flip out when other people charge money for them. That being said...if people don't like the cost, no one's forcing them to buy 👍
@daveedwardsconsulting69165 жыл бұрын
Most of these developers create extensions which they use in their own work and are gracious enough to offer them to us. Other firms are more "Professional Developers" in nature and create extensions in order to sell them as part of their business plan. I'd like to see a greater push on Trimble's part to support the small developers (some how) and hope in the future many of them will use the micro-payments services such as Patreon or Buy Me a Coffee.

Very nice! 179$ a year for such a plug-in is way too expensive. It seems more worth while as a universal importer more then a poly manager but still.. Maybe if this was a one time fee and even then. Should be one time at 30-50$. I hate where ever thing is go annually. You don't always have to update to newest version but this kinda forces you to. Used to update software one every 3-5 years. Annual cost is usually cheaprr then perpetual but still cost allot. When you go annually your average annual cost goes from a few thousands to tens of thousands total. I have placemaker which is awesome but got it on sale and no way im paying for it every year.

Am starting to hate sketchup. They have become a milking money distributors. unbelievable. The rest of the softwares do that by default and free. You would imagine in version 2019 sketchup would have evolved and grown to were it would be a self sustaining software but you have to spend more and more nowaday, but In another hand sketchup keeps youtubers testers at flow and thats good.. If these extentions were 5 bucks or 20 (no higher than) i wouldn't mind but everytine extension are getting more and more expensive.. Good vid by the way.. Cheers!!

I understand these feelings, but find myself a bit in the middle on all this. I think at some point, some extensions are targeted at individual users, and some are meant to be targeted more at working professionals, like this one, extensions like Placemaker, and others. I also support your right to not purchase the extension if you feel like it's out of your price range. Realistically, this usage is definitely targeted at a much higher useage than just the hobby user needs. That said, and this is a serious question - do ALL the other softwares really do this by default? I haven't used Max, Maya, I've done a bit of Blender, and haven't really done many others, but I was not aware that all of them went in an simplified models and textures automatically to increase system performance. This feels like an exaggeration to me, but maybe I just don't have enough experience to know. In either case, nice to hear from you and hope you're doing well :)
@mae23095 жыл бұрын
@@Thesketchupessentials oh yes, max n maya have the optimizer pro by default it decreases your model or you can always turn them into proxies. I use those two as well as zbrush where you can use your decimation master plugin "included by default" and it keeps the detail. i usually take it to zbrush I like it better. But then again, the rest of them softwares can now handle high quality poly counts with our blinking.. so theres no need to struggle on optimizing your model unless you are making assets for gaming. I think sketchup should be handling high poly counts by now as well.. i hate for sketchup to go down the drain but it seems like they're wanting to go down on purpose..

@@Thesketchupessentials Correct me if I am wrong but Placemaker more of a service and not just an extension. Placemaker requires ongoing updates to keep current with the ever changing landscape (literally). Skimp does not have the same requirement. Other than patches, the extension requires no further immediate development. Also, at the price point it is too expensive for most professional users. From experience I can state that managing subscription costs has quickly become a serious concern for professional artists and 3D Modelers whether they be a lone wolf or part of a team in a studio. Timing is everything and the release Transmutr gives the users a very good comparison of features, price and the option to purchase vs subscribe. I will be purchasing Transmutr by the end of the week. It will be interesting to watch Transmutr and Skimp punch it out in the open marketplace.
@Thesketchupessentials5 жыл бұрын
Placemaker definitely has a recurring cost aspect associated with it as the map data costs money to keep up to date. Not sure if there are any recurring costs associated with this one, but you're right, it will be interesting to see where the marketplace goes on the Skimp vs. Transmutr discussion as things move forward
@daveedwardsconsulting69165 жыл бұрын
I'd much rather see the need for these to lessen by Trimble getting their head out and make SketchUp work with denser models or use a proxy system.
@Thesketchupessentials5 жыл бұрын
Hmmm...you think they're going to make that change any time soon?
@daveedwardsconsulting69165 жыл бұрын
@@Thesketchupessentials Sadly, no... I'm really glad to see the community and developers taking this into their own hands. Hopefully we'll start to see more advanced systems use Skippy files and SU Extensions natively.
@RazzTheKing5 жыл бұрын
Aren't there any extensions that lower the poly count for free? That one is ridiculously expensive.
@Thesketchupessentials5 жыл бұрын
Not that I'm aware of, and probably for good reason. I'm sure the development time that goes into creating something like this and maintaining it is much more complex than just a simple extension that's found for free in the extension warehouse.
