Hi everyone! Let me know what you think about Medeek BIM in the comments below! :)

Seeing how SketchUp is turning into a fully fledged BIM software......is it still worth it to stay with Revit (from an architecture students point of view)?
@medeekdesign4 жыл бұрын
@@Arun-yl8kc My goal as the developer of these extensions is to provide an alternative to the more traditional (static) design tools that many of us in this field are accustomed to (ie. AutoCAD, Revit, Chief Architect, Solid Works, Catia etc...) Whether I can fully achieve or realize that goal is yet to be determined. I've used all of these software packages in my career as a Structural Engineer, Mechanical Engineer and as a Designer. I still use AutoCAD extensively for 2D documentation, especially engineering details and drawings, but for 3D I don't think you will find a better and more intuitive drawing environment than SketchUp. The problem with SketchUp is that by itself it is pretty barebones, it needs more tools to make it really useful (ie. automate certain tasks). Essentially that is what the Medeek extensions do, we automate certain drawing tasks so, for example, the user does not need to worry about manually creating every stud in a house design/model. However, SketchUP has a certain freedom and intuitive feel about it that these other programs do not. So if you can combine the intuitive 3D environment with the nit picky details of a program like Chief Architect or Revit, then I think you have yourself a winner.

@@medeekdesign we spoke a few years ago as you were starting your truss tools. Do you remember? You've come a long way. I am still battling the incomplete, silo based design world to get a buildable plan. I like your tools.

@@ScoutyBoyO I think I remember talking to you a few years back, yes, I've kept working on the tools and they are slowly evolving into more serious design tools. Give it a couple more years and I think I may actually have something.

As always another awesome video, Thank-you Justin, you are killing it.

I was hoping to see how the floor truss settings worked, in particular if there were open-web floor joists or just solid? Good video as usual Justin.

We debated buying this but since we do more finished apartment renders we didn't really need it. It's probably the best Sketchup add-on in my opinion when it comes to creating all of the fine details.
@Thesketchupessentials4 жыл бұрын
Probably agree - unless you're rendering the building structure itself, it's probably a bit too "nuts and bolts" for that application
@medeekdesign4 жыл бұрын
If all you need is the exterior of the building then most of what these plugins do is probably overkill for your needs. However, you would be surprised how quickly you can throw up a structure with these plugins (just the exterior shell, not interior walls or finishes/furnishings) and thereby get a rendering out to a customer.

@@medeekdesign I may have to look into that!

Hi Justin, great video thank you. I am designing a passive house for canadian weather. Would we be able to see the insulation in the foundation ? For instance under the slab and between that slab and the walls. Also any options or tips for Larsen Truss walls ? Thank you.

Thanks for the video... This plugin is awesome..But I already purchase profile builder3 and quantifier pro this week.. 😅

Lol - those are great too :)

There is some minor overlap between PB3 and the Medeek extensions however by and large they provide mostly different results. PB is an excellent general modeling tool, Quantifier is an excellent general estimating tool. I would highly recommend PB for wrapping interior rooms with crown molding for instance. The Medeek extensions are more specialized tools designed for modeling actual construction geometry exactly as one would build it.

@@medeekdesign yes... I use PB3 for 2-3 weeks now, and I built database on it.. It is great to make DED..and I link my quantifier pro with my standard BQ in my country.. Just like Justin said, both are great combination. Thanks

maybe you now the way to draw building from bricks easily. I had done this simply by coping and groups, maybe there are a plugin? I need to know how many bricks do i need for house.
@Thesketchupessentials4 жыл бұрын
Generally I wouldn't model every single brick in a house - seems like you could calculate this by figuring out the area you need and the average area of a brick...
@medeekdesign4 жыл бұрын
Modeling every brick would quickly overwhelm you model and computer. A more practical approach is to model the brick facade or walls with solids (groups) and then one can easily select these groups to calculate the volume (automatically done by SketchUp), divide this number by the thickness of the wall and then you also have the area. Knowing the size of a single brick it is then very simple to estimate the number of bricks required. In the foundation plugin when you use the CMU option for stemwalls you will notice that I am reporting the number of bricks rather than the cubic yards of concrete. I'm essentially calculating the volume and then using the standard brick size to determine the number of CMU blocks required.

Hey, Seems like you are not talking about these plugins much anymore. Is there something else you like better now?
@Thesketchupessentials Жыл бұрын
No, I just haven't been doing a lot of in-depth models like this lately. Medeek is still great for walls, foundations and trusses!
