I bought a framing square at Walmart for just a few bucks and used it as a constant reference on an old bench I had. I laid it on the front corner and marked out its profile, then used a router bit to grind out the material until the square fit perfectly flush with the work surface and used flat head countersink screws to hold it in place. It gave me a square corner, a straight edge, and a constant 16" and 24" ruler available at all times so I didnt need to continuously retrieve my measuring tape. It was an invaluable addition to the bench

I bought a "Starrett" square from Amazon-it was about £8 and believed that I was going to get a tiny-maybe 6" long one but it turned up a few weeks later and was in fact 16" long-I must try to read the ad's through properly! Anyway, it was "Made In Brazil- not China for a change and to be honest I had zero expectations and was almost resigned to cutting off the side bit and just using it for a Rule/Straight edge but imagine my surprise when I tested it using the same method that you showed and discovered that it was absolutely bang on PERFECT! -I kept testing it but had the same result every time. Check it out: Starrett K53M-350-S still available on Amazon for around $10--$12! You will NOT be disappointed.

Rex, I really enjoy your videos. I'm a retired science educator and disabled in pain for 14 years. But only the first 24 hours per day. To cope I took up light wood woodworking to make toys and turn icecicles Christmas ornaments, and mostly make toys for my 5 grandsons, like wooden robots and assorted puzzles and anything I like on pinterest. I particularly like your takes on hand planes an super cheap tools that work or could be modified to work. I do have an extensive tool collection mainly because my father once told me that if you have a good supply of tools you'd never be without a job. I just like the coping benefits now and have no intentions to sell my crosses or spinning tops in a box. I give them to family or have orders from family that will last forever. I thank you for all your great tool insights though your fantastic.

I have an old Starrett combination square and two dividers with amazing dark gray patina on them that good old clean tools get. I got them from a particular old feller that has been at the same flee market for more than a few years. I have bought an item from him almost every visit once or twice a year. Excellent buy! Don't forget to check the inside of the sqare as well since Chinese die cuts may not be completely square. I've also gotten to like some of the plastic (and cheap) Speed Squares. Empire seems to be good and a few others. Check one and see how it is and then, if it is good, any others should be good as well since they are injection molded and no hand done is required. Great for tough and abusive use (like farm/ranch/construction) where you might not want to use the decent Swanson's in your shop. If the $5 plastic gets torn up its no big deal. Note: Always check the new ones, if they came from a different mold, they might be out of square. All my Empires from Lowes have been good though. Nice mod on the square by the way.

I just bought one of these squares-at the price it was too good to pass up on-I wont blame you if I get a duff one!, bought three of their $3.65 small hand planes too (the plastic ones) If nothing else I will have 3 spare blades for any planes I decide to try and make for myself. I enjoy your channel and am glad I found it so thanks for that and please, keep going with the videos! The square and the cheapo planes turned up albeit weeks apart and were in every respect, identical to yours , the square "handle" is every bit as rough and crude as yours but I had anticipated this and cleaned up the edges with fine files and sandpaper and now have a perfectly functional -and ACCURATE try-square. I usually buy the best brands when I can afford it as there is nothing worse than being on a job and finding that the tools you have just are not up to it, I now know that this is not always the case and that there are some absolute bargains out there if you are prepared to hunt them down which is great news if on a really tight budget and attempting to equip your workshop. I don't want to do Amazon's job for them but if you buy that way and don't like it-just send it back, if your reasons are valid you'll lose nothing and will get a full refund.
@RexKrueger5 жыл бұрын
Those planes are worth it for the blades alone. The plastic planes are...meh. Fun, but not serious tools. I'm glad you like my work. New videos every Wednesday!

Some time ago i bougt for abt 10 Euro (i'm in Germany) a combination square here in a hardwarestore. The reason was, i know, that these squares are cheap and inaccurate, and i planned to fix one, so i get a good combinationsquare. BUT i didn't believe it and checked it more and more times... this damned elcheapo combinationsquare was good and accurate. I also have 5 or so similar squares in different dimensions like the example, you showed us in the video. Only one is accurate. The others i will fix, i have 2 real mechanicans squares, which can act as a refference. This smooth inserts definitely i will copy. Thanks for the video.

I must disagree entirely. I've never once found sandpaper faster and with anything I do with the plane, the surface is done when I'm finished. No need for finer grits.

What do you say? Thank you. I feel like I should return the favor. Here is a tip. When or if you travel, look for old independent hardware stores. A dollar store near me (as in, a real one - they get stock from other random stores nearby, including dollar-and-up stores) had a bunch of squares. Unfortunately after testing 2 that were both out of square by what looked like the same amount in the same way, I stopped checking them. I have heard good things about the plastic speed squares (more than the aluminum speed squares).
@RexKrueger6 жыл бұрын
Oh, I'd go aluminum every time. Plastic will never be as rigid or durable. Just did some stairs with a carpenter I know. His speed squares are all aluminium.
@Aubreykun6 жыл бұрын
I meant just the super cheap plastic and aluminum ones instead of the normal hardware store pickings. The thing I'd read about the extremely cheapo-end plastic ones was that they came out square every time, while the aluminum ones at a similar price point was a gamble. But buying cheap squares without being able to handle them is something I've avoided.

How do you know that shelf has a straight edge? Did you check it with a strait edge tool? If so, how do you know that straight edge tool was straight? It's a trap. Kidding, you can check a straight edge tool similar to the way you checked that square of course. Just strike a line, and flip it over. Then check your shelf or whatever.
@censusgary5 жыл бұрын
weedeater64 : You can also get a very straight line by stretching a string tight. That’s how a chalk line works. That’s how the builder made the lines straight on the Pyramids and the Parthenon (I assume; I wasn’t there when it happened).
@censusgary5 жыл бұрын
I realize this series is about the cheapest available tools, or at least the cheapest useable tools, but if you need to put at least half an hour into modifying this square before you can stand to use it, and if your time is worth anything at all, wouldn’t you be better off getting a $10 or $20 square that you can use right out of the box (or blister pack, or whatever)? Or you could do what I did, and spend under $10 on a used Starrett combination square in good condition.

I’m not a fan of modern try squares, even though they can be depth gauges etc. Old squares with brass and rosewood are better balanced and are not going to change. They are usually cheap. When I started woodwork I bought a new traditional style square that was discounted. A year later I realised why my joints were always off!! I now have a few of different sizes, and no excuse. I like your improvement. Some tools are ridiculously cheap from China. I bought a block plane for ten dollars(nz). The mouth is ridiculously open, but despite that it works fine. I might epoxy some walnut in the gap one day. The blade takes a good edge .

Ummmmm, for $1.61, I'd say it would still be worth it for the straight-edge. Good question!
@crawdaddy123456 жыл бұрын
O No... It's now $1.63. Thanks

I know, my influence drive the price up. I have to be careful with all this power I have.

Why does everything say free shipping and then there is a shipping cost when you click on an item? Are you in a different country or something?
@RexKrueger6 жыл бұрын
I don't know. I do get free shipping and I'm in the US.

Ok, that was creepy. My name is David. My first thought was that there was some sort of complicated text to speech thing dynamically pulling my user info. Occam's razor and my initial conclusion rarely agree.

That's hilarious! It was just a funny thing that got caught on camera. Nothing to do with you, David.

I'm curious why the Starett is shaped the way it is. And the adjustability... is that for the angle or the length that sticks out? Anyone with a Starett can answer this?
@RexKrueger6 жыл бұрын
It's shaped the way it is because it gives you right angles and 45 degrees. It's adjustable to fit different length stock, to draw lines parallel to an edge and to use it to measure the depth of holes. Really, just the handiest tool ever.
@mildyproductive97266 жыл бұрын
Rex Krueger Thx. I see people using them all the time. But never see them being adjusted.

Tempting and a nice video but I think I'll pass. Thanks. But still looking for a more solid, accurate and reasonably priced larger square.

Mine actually has cast iron instead of aluminum
@RexKrueger6 жыл бұрын
Really? That's interesting. How do you like the square?
@isFuzzy6 жыл бұрын
Rex Krueger Rough on the edges thats for sure. I was thinking of wood-ing the body too but the casting is pretty rough at the split joint..
@RexKrueger6 жыл бұрын
Hmm. Even with cast iron, you should be able to file that down with little trouble. It's worth it.
@isFuzzy6 жыл бұрын
Rex Krueger It is more like I cant seem to figure out what to fill the voids from the rough casting. The part the springy rule is riverted in.. Looks as if a wall was erected in the mid of the grand canyon…
