Note for those running into similar issues about VdbResearch- names got updated in release 0.4.0: -Rename VdbActors to VdbMaterialActors, because they use Unreal`s material system -Rename VdbResearch* to VdbPrincipled* because they use a custom shader based on offline raytracer principled shaders -Rename VdbVolume to VdbVolumeStatic

Thanks for this. But when I go to insert a VDB Principled Actor, it doesn't show me volumetrics in the Details panel. What gives? Cheers.

I have been playing with this for a few hours now, and my best result so far is to use embergen for the vdb creation, export density and flames, and use the flames for temperature instead of temp. Then I play with the density multiplier and the black body values, and I get some really nice flames. Thanks again for the tutorial and pointing me in the right direction.

Some problem fixing, If it helps anyone: -To get rid of grainy VDBs: go to "Volume > Attributes" and increase the Samples Per Pixel. -I also noticed that some sims won't appear complete (as if they were distorted by the bounding box) or do not appear at all. To fix this you can decrease the Local Step Size (although be careful as it can slow down a lot your PC performance). Big thanks for the tut on this plugin Winbush!

@@jaychoirenderender you can find it in the details panel when the vdb is selected. It's under the MaterialComponent. Although be careful. I wasn't noticing any difference so I typed in 64 and everything went dog slow, so I tried to type over the number 64 with 12 and UE, being slow, entered 6412 and crashed.

I'm really surprised Epic never started creating a VDB solution internally. Especially one that could convert VDB into Niagara particles. This would be awesome because then the particles would be game ready. Still a great plugin. Thanks for sharing.

Thanks for this wonderful tutorial. I hope that in the future we can play with smoke colors and black body like we can with vdbs in blender in Lumen and not path tracer.

So for whatever reason, I can only get the VDBs from Embergens free downloads to show up. Anything created and exported on my own from Embergen lacks the ability to display correctly once dragged in, even as just a still VDB. Something about it clearly has to do with bounding size. Embergens free examples import with bounding box already scaled, custom ones exported from Embergen import as extremely tiny - now usually like in C4D you fix this by scaling your VDB up by 200x, which then shows the bounding box correctly in UE5, but still no VDB volumetrics are visible whatsoever. Tried increasing the Local Step Size and other parameters on UE's actor object for the vdb, but nothing works. Very weird since on import it clearly shows the custom VBD has density, flame, a dimension and memory size, but shows absolutely nothing. I'm thinking the VDBs available on Embergens site have a different parameter set on export that isn't so obvious for custom ones by it's users - have tried messing with upscaling / sim size in Embergen prior to export but still nothing.

This is a game changer! If they add exponential height fog to the path tracer like they said they would, its almost ready to compete with the likes of redshift and octane!

@@JonathanWinbush Yea its honestly insane, and I was amazed at the speed of the pathtracer as well. But there are some advanced features like anamorphic bokeh + Aperture Edge that are missing, though I allready saw some custom blueprint setups (paid) that fix those issues👍

Hi, when I drag and drop the VDB into my content browser it doesn't allow me to tick the "Is Sequence" and I cannot animate it. Anyone can help me ?

and if you drag the sequencer file into your level, and check the autoplay in its details, and play the game, you will have a photorealistic turnado vdb in your game 😁 that's cool!

Thanks for the video WINBUSH. Very detailed steps. I am having an issue. I just got the plugin (UE5.1.1_0.6.5). When I try either installation method shown, the engine crashes while recompiling an older project. Can this be fixed, or do I just need to use it on new projects from here on out?

It's not showing up for me either in the 5.1.1 release. The VDB Principled actor won't allow you to import any VDB sequences into the timeline.

Hey Winbush do you think you could release an Updated version of this Tutorial? The workflow now is VERY different. For some reason, Pathtracing in 5.0.1 isn't enabling for me, and the VDB Research Actor onwards has all been changed. Please let me know!

@@JonathanWinbush All good Winbush! Figured out everything except for UE 5.0.2 Path Tracing. For some reason I'm not able to use it, I'm not sure what happened to it in 5.0.1/5.0.2. Do you have any ideas on how to fix this?

@@KingKong19100 I know this is old, but did you try enabling 'SM6' in Project Settings? (Platforms > Windows > D3D12 Targeted Shader Formats) - It's required for Path Tracing to show up in the Viewport options, but not required to enable in the project (which is misleading)

Would anyone know why I was unable to install this plug-in? I went there tonight and could not find an actual file to download. After much frustrated back and forth around the eidos site, I eventually just grabbed a zip file. I figured, what the heck. This seemed to have the SparseVolumetrics plug-in, along with a number of other UE project folders. I dropped this into my plug-ins folder, as per the tutor's directive. I launch UE5, and it tells me that it cannot compile the plug-in (I forget the precise message). Any thoughts / ideas??? Thanks.

i am trying to import fumefx VDB sequence from maya into UE. start frame of my VDB sequence is not 0 or 1, its random frame number so UE is not reading it as a sequence. But when i import VDB sequence starting from frame 0, UE reads it as sequence. Is there any solution to import VDB sequence that doesn't start from frame 0???

if you import a simple static vdb cloud, and you want to animate it,just a simple transform(position keys),on the render movie it doesn't appear the animation. you know the reason?

Thanks for this great tutorial. For me, in LIT mode, I can see the imported OpenVDB Cloud in the vewport (UE5 Project) but once I choose path tracing (view mode) the vdb is not showing anymore. Raytrace is enabled, project is a blank new one. Any suggestions? Thanks

Great video We have to be carefull with the latest release (0.6.0) VDBs layers (like density, temperature, flamme etc...) need to have the exact same size to work Otherwize you will be able to plug the density but other non-matching grids won't work In Houdini for exemple it might be the case when converting volumes to VDBs for export you'll need to do a "VDB Combine" in "Activity Union" mode with the vel.x for exemple to have the same grid size for all your layers

Thank you so much, appreciate it. Unfortunately, after the installation, the Plugin doesn't show up within the Plugins. Could it be, that the plugin only works when UE5 was installed on the C drive? I use a different drive. Installed it exactly as you showed. But this thing is not showing up under All Plugins. Hmmm...

Hi , winbush, did you get issue reagarding multiple vdb overlaping eachother , when you animate camera in overlaping vdb did you feel jerk or flick of depth issue in vdb between each other. because i get the issue of appearing and disappering between multiple vdb if there is a overlaping between them .

Hi there. Been watching your tute, and having some trouble. I cached out a 120-frame, VDB sequence from Maya's Bifrost (a gun blast). I exported 7 attributes with, 5 of which were accepted by UE5 during import: * voxel_flame_level_set * voxel_flame_speed * voxel_fog_density * voxel_temperature * and voxel_velocity. Why these? Well, I picked the attributes that seemed closest to what a Maya Learning Channel tutor was picking in his video. I.e., I'm guessing. So, after dragging and dropping the first frame of my VDB sequence into the Content folder, I waited a while, but eventually everything came in. But, it came in as 5 separate files (based on the attributes listed above). Not sure if this is correct or not. Anyway, I looked for VDBResearchActor, but it was not there. I went to the developer's site and it seems to have changed to VDBPrincipledActor. So, I selected this instead. I went into its details tab and started making changes based on his instructions. One thing that needed to be done was to -- and this aligns with what you say in your video -- go into the Lit menu and select Pathtracing. Well, I have no path tracing option, even though I set everything up in Project Settings. (I have a GTX card, which may be the culprit?) Anyway, all I have are dots. No volumetric cloudiness. All that, and it seems all I have is dots to show for it. LOL Follow-up.... Found the Step Size, which slows things down, but definitely makes my sim better in terms of its density / cloudiness. Unfortunately, while I can now control the color of the VDB, I cannot seem to get in heat info, and hence no fire. The options under PrincipledActor are not the same as under ResearchActor. This is fun! 😫😭

You have to hit up the developer I honestly haven't used this plugin much since this tutorial as the developer is actively always working on it so he's been updating often

Bummer, doesnt work for me. downloaded the current release of the plugin "UE5.0.3 Precompiled version 0.5.2". Using the same VDB pack as in the video. Seems to import fine but when I drag the VDB into the viewport, its black, not gray like in this video. Dragging the "Mt_VDB_Lit" material on it, and nothing changes - Still black and doesnt respond to the scene directional light. Im using UE 5.0.3

Only issue I'm having, even after playing with all the settings and material settings, is that the clouds don't want to accept ambient light. I can fake it with emission but it looks weird. The clouds want to be grey and shadows black.

I've been searching for this option in unreal since the day I started learning it but didn't find, I had a very big, cinematic Idea of making a 3D motion poster which includes large scale smoke blasts and simulations I had to stop it after knowing unreal couldn't important vdbs but only alembics with lots of limitations :(

Thank you for great video! Did you try to import .vdb sequence from Cinema 4d Pyro. In my case Unreal crashes when I try to load this sequence.

Hi. I'm afraid we cannot use this plugin on macOS yet. Right?? I want a small cloud in my project(created with blender) and so I can't use it. :(( It doesn't look natural without being a volume...

hello, very nice vidéo! I have just a problem with the plugin and i don't realy understand. I follow the step for adding a plugin but when i enable it and drag a vdb file on my unreal, i don't have the pop up for importing vdb and the failed import error. If you know why, any help would be welcome!

Yea it's to my understanding the plugin has been updated since this tutorial so I'd look at the documentation to see the changes as I know he updates regulary

thank you for this tuto do you need a rtx GPU to make it work properly ? I tested with my 1080ti unfortunately, I had a big freeze followed by an error message about the gpu

I'm using a 2080ti myself as I'm showing in the tutorial but I think the newer the gpu the more stable I'd imagine but I can't say for a fact

In UE 5.02, I cannot find the "VDB Research Actor". There are several other VDB actors, e.g. "VDB Principled Actor", etc., a couple of which I've tried but can't seem to follow what you're doing. Cannot find any info on this actor anywhere, Lol. Any hints?

Hello, for the same material, why do different VDB materials have light and shadow, and some have no light and shadow relationship? They all use the default VDB material

can we get an updated tutorial.? i tried following this video and I just cannot get my vdbs working. the setups has changed too much to what this video is showing. I cannot produce any results. for instance, my volumes dont appear at all in the viewport.

Hi there, thank you for the tutorial video. I am having an issue trying to install the plugin. I get the error message: Plugin 'SparseVolumetrics' failed to load because module 'VolumeStreamer' could not be found. Please ensure the plugin is properly installed, otehrwise consider disabling the plugin for this project. I am also missing the SparseVolumetrics folder that you have. I enabled the only volumetric plugin available in ue5 and it gives me a bunch of other errors. The following modules are missing or built with a different version: volumeImporter, volumeSequencer, VolumeStreamer, VolumeRuntime. Engine modules cannot be compiled at runtime. Please build through your IDE. Do you know how I can fix this? Thanks in advance.

You can go to "Volume > Attributes" and increase the Samples Per Pixel.

Ive been playing with this and its great, but I have the problem that the vdbs I import are getting culled by distance and I don't seem to be able to control the range. Did you experience this yourself? Is there a way to set this?
