When you are famished, you might feel like you need everything on the menu, but once you start eating, you realize you ordered too much.
It’s the same urge when buying something or developing a product. As a customer you feel like you will need every feature available to be productive; but in reality, that is not the case.
How many features are you really using on your mobile phone? Think.
So, if you think logically many features can wait, or they can be just wish lists. So, as a Product person, you must prioritize what is required and build that first MVP, have your users use it, get feedback, and keep improving.
Many successful products that you see and use today, didn't launch with all their features at once; they evolved over time, adding and removing features throughout their journey.
Hence, focusing on a Minimum Viable Product or MVP is crucial.
Another strategy is to show the users what they will get in actuality, it's also recommended to start with a proof of concept or POC during the discovery phase, then move to an MVP, and finally, implement enhancements in a phased manner.
Let me share an experience to illustrate this.
Many years ago, I had a customer who wanted all the required features to be delivered together. They were not ready for the MVP approach. Their statement was simple: “We want all these features. All are critical”
So, for them everything is critical. We several times told the customer that this would be risky as there are many dependencies. We told them: “It is recommended go with an iterative approach and hence, tell us what are the most critical features, we will deliver them, you use the product and we will keep on adding features iteratively.”
Watch the Video for more.
Funda is “Always start with an MVP, then refine and enhance from there.”
