I actually have been able to speak like a native-and to write better than natives- through hard work in a locked room in the dirtiest of countries. You don't really need to be surrounded by native speakers to score 119 in toefl as I did or to be a profound writer or to speak fast and naturally and to have less and less lapses of memory or errors of wordchoice. So never give up and always refresh your memory through regular listening or reading if you like books and I'll happily elaborate on my learning experience if people would want that.

Being English, I would argue that even in British English, "pants" still refers to legwear in general. Different types break down into jeans, trousers, shorts etc. The phenomenon of calling underpants "pants" is a somewhat recent thing that has come into the general lexicon over the past thirty years or so. But it is still quite normal to refer to legwear as "pants"

@yukimoonlight79933 жыл бұрын
"Write better than natives" You say that as if natives don't also work hard, I know some of them don't, but let's not take those into account. Also speak like a native? I know it's possible to get rid of your accent, but to sound like a native? Unless you learnt the language in their country or were born there, it's not possible, as far as I'm concerned. Other than that, congrats for your score on TOEFL.
@gomasterenglish93323 жыл бұрын
@@yukimoonlight7993 Now this might develop into a serious argument and I am not willing to do so. I didn't mean to say that I speak like a native in terms of my accent, I still want to speak with an Arab accent and I don't find fault in that. My point was that I am a wordsmith, I know how to play with words and I am widely read in English, so my spoken English is the sort of polite, gentlemanly English you'd hear in universities and among cultivated social circles. Now I am running another cultural, far more serious presence and I have native following there who praised my video essays really highly. So please keep in mind that I'm still struggling to learn how to be vulgar in speech, but this is the single lack, given that in my life of reading pursuits I had little time to take in pop culture. You can see for yourself and have a flavour of what it feels to be an ambitious non-native writer.
