Perfectly understandable. I'm 41 myself, so I get where you're coming from. I hope this works out!. Also... I played that, I enjoyed that!

I'm pinning this because you played Important Channel Update (audio only) (2024) and enjoyed it.

I started watching because you play a lot of really obscure stuff. I really liked that I saw games here that no one else plays, that gave me a periscope into the minds of unknown developers of yesteryear. All the best with the new content!

I am bummed about the news, but I don't blame you in the slightest. Frankly, it's astounding you managed to maintain such a breakneck uploading pace for so long! 1,022 episodes is quite the achievement and something to be proud of. Thank you for providing countless hours of entertainment and insight with the RDGS, and I look forward to seeing what you cook up moving forward!
@getoffmylawn6692Ай бұрын
The entertainment and insight doesn't stop with the RDGS, that's for sure. Thank you for being one of my biggest fans and contributors to the general welfare of both the channel AND the comments section of these videos. The feeling is very much mutual with regards to looking forward to what you cook up.

I understand, it's hard work making so much content every week. Especially once you add all of your other responsibilities in life. It's part of the reason I don't post more often myself. I think you're probably doing the right thing, I'll still be around to watch what you make. People watch for more than just the game or thing you're showing, personality keeps people coming back.
@StormkeeperPUАй бұрын
I totally get where you're coming from... I didn't even edit my IsaacStorm Let's Play videos (though I remuxed them from MKV to MP4) and the act of recording them for 45 mins plus up to 2 hours got tiring for me at times; it's why I had to ensure I didn't let any other LP series I plan to do exceed 40 minutes at most with logical stopping points! I'm also aware of the effort that editing videos take too, despite not doing it yet, though it makes perfect sense as a lot of people have editors, and the likes of Civvie11 only output videos intermittently. I was considering a similar format to the Random DOS Game Show and I am still considering it, although I definitely need to think about my format some more, especially given my mental health and the fact that I'm also 41, and what that means for me in terms of content creation across the board, especially as I'm miles away from even 1k subs right now! Either way though, I'll be sticking around and looking forward to seeing what you have planned!
@getoffmylawn6692Ай бұрын
I will miss your comments on general compatibility and other little tidbits of information regarding various titles, but I do hope you stick around and lend your wisdom with regards to other things that I cover. Some people are born to talk for hours at a time. You and me are not those people. I've tried the longplay format in the past and it's not for me, and streaming definitely wouldn't be my cup of tea either. 40 minutes is right at the threshold, you're absolutely right. It's one of the reasons I enforced a time limit in the first place. For what it's worth, getting to that first 1K and gaining visual 'credibility' from hesitant subscribers is possibly the hardest step. Most viewers won't subscribe unless they see that thousands have done so already. Once the climb has been made into the thousands, going beyond that is much easier.
@StormkeeperPUАй бұрын
@getoffmylawn6692 I still have a bunch of your videos to go through that I can comment on in that regard, but eventually it will taper down, although that said, I have plenty of time to get used to the change when it happens! Also, I do plan to stick around and share my "wisdom" (as you put it), as well as also my experiences, so I'm not going anywhere in a hurry! And yeah, I definitely can't handle talking at length right now, though I'd hopefully at least be able to scale it up to 2-2.5 hours for my IsaacStorm videos and eventual solo streams, but I am hoping to do some team streams in the future which hopefully means that I'll be able to go a little longer as there would be at least one (up to 3-4) other person to go back and forth with! I do need to learn how to hold things on my own though, especially when I start doing stuff outside of my LP videos! But yeah, I think that 30-40 minutes is definitely a good sweet spot, especially if I have to record 3-4 videos back to back, especially as I can schedule bio breaks between each recording and catch my breath for a bit, because I need to pace myself better for videos, which is why I am being more thoughtful about recording, scheduling, and the all-important publishing! Re getting to 1K makes perfect sense; I've not been producing anything outside of posts/comments for the last couple of years at this point, so getting back into recording again after so long is probably going to be a bit of a learning curve again, but it'll probably pass quickly as I get used to things again, coupled with making sure everything is properly set up in order for me to spend less energy and time doing things! I'll definitely be taking aboard what you said regarding subs though, as it does help reinforce some what I already thought, in that it takes a bit of time to get rolling! Oddly enough though, I reached Twitch Affiliate status in 6-7 weeks of properly starting, but at the same time, the thresholds were relatively modest, although I will need to hop back on that wagon too eventually, in order to make sure I make the hours threshold, and also sort out payment details, although I am getting ahead of myself a bit! In any case, onwards and upwards to us both!

I'm older then you by at least 10 years and I do enjoy the nostalgic games. But I also enjoy the 'new' games you introduce to me. And I still do play video games almost every single day. They are very important to me and always will be. You have the only show that I decided to go back and watch all of them from the very beginning, so yeah, I will miss the Random DOS Game Show but I will still be here checking out your channel to see what you do with it.
@getoffmylawn6692Ай бұрын
It is natural in a way, getting older and being less receptive to new things. That's just reality. Like you said though, it doesn't mean we can't enjoy new things. There's a happy medium to be found in middle age between playing the same old titles over and over and venturing into parts unknown. Thank you for all the great comments you've left over the years, Mike. We've had many a chinwag over various obscure DOS titles, and I think it's fair to say I've enjoyed every one.

Had me worried for a moment that you were going away completely! 😱 I fully support you upgrading your channel. As much as I enjoy the Random DOS Games show (and have learned of so many new games!), you have a tendency to drive yourself too hard for too few of us. Upgrading to a wider audience will give you and the channel a chance to grow and prosper. And hey, maybe you can spare an episode or two for the occasional Random DOS Game! 😉
@getoffmylawn6692Ай бұрын
I had a good long think with regards to going away completely or not, and this is the inevitable compromise that I came to. Hopefully it works out nicely for everyone involved! I'm aware that my workload was viewed as complete insanity by my peers, since putting out one decent video a month is hard as it is. I remember one of them telling me that they'd have a video out soon, and quipping that by that point I'd have already released seventeen more. They weren't far off the mark either with the tongue in cheek comment, and I got a good chuckle from it. Hopefully the people I have met on here will appreciate the direction I'm going. The general ethos of the channel and its continued championing of unappreciated retro games will continue! Thank you for all your comments, I DO remember usernames on here and I know you've left plenty of them. ;)

I've always enjoyed tinkering with old computers, mainly just setting them up the way I like. Your KZbin channel reminded me that it's important to enjoy the journey-and have fun with games too! I love how your content focuses beyond the hardware. You're absolutely right, there are already plenty of hardware-focused channels. I'll be following your channel no matter where it goes!

Exactly, I'll leave the tinkering to the tinkerers! There's no point in me pretending that I could do what your lot do. Thank you for your kind words, it's really reassuring as a creator to know that the general sentiment is a positive one regarding this update!

@JimLeonardАй бұрын
Were you playing them 5 times a week, or 5 games on the weekend and turning that 2-hour session into 5 videos? The latter is much easier on one's schedule, and much more sustainable. I can sense your frustration. But KZbin exists to cater to their audience, and when 1000 "random DOS games" videos don't gain traction, you have to step back and think about why that is and what you're trying to achieve. I personally think that moving towards scripted content is the RIGHT way for you to move forward, so I'm glad you came to the same conclusion.
@getoffmylawn6692Ай бұрын
It was 4-5 times a week, every week, for 4 years. On top of the scripted videos. I wouldn't say that they didn't gain traction, as thousands of people stuck around! That several thousand needs to become tens of thousands, and I (and others, apparently) believe that I have the chops to do that now. We'll see. As you know yourself through personal experience, life gets in the way, and you have to make profound decisions in response to that. I'll be taking a few pages from your playbook among several other KZbinrs going forward, and we'll see how that works out. Thanks as always for the thoughts, Jim.

I'm 44 and I still play DOS games but usually the same games :-( MK1-3 are my recent go tos. Dune II and WarCraft are others. Sometimes I go back to OMF 2097, Hi-Octane or Screamer and occasionally some other games. A lot of my time is spent playing newer games but funnily enough remasters. Currently Doom 64 and Grim Fandango remasters take up most of my time.
