Man, this game was my first contact with the universe of "The Lord of the Rings". I played it a few years before I had access to the books. So, for me it's very charged with a good feeling of nostalgia, although I never got past the beginning. It, along with the illustrations by the Hildebrandt brothers and Angus McBride and de Iron Crown RPG are the main reason why I never managed to completely swallow Peter Jackson's films. An interesting fact about the game's main soundtrack is that it sounds very similar (strangely) to the soundtrack that Basil Poledouris composed for the film Flesh+Blood. It's worth putting the songs side by side to compare. Anyway, thanks for the video!

OMG thank you for making me smile. I wrote this game in a couple of weeks over Christmas. I managed to get it published as a free game on PC Plus magazine. I was learning how to program in Turbo Pascal on the PC at the time.

You ever play Sword of the Samurai? It's the best of this gens representation of this kind of simulator personally. It came out in 89 as well.

When I was in high school in the 80's, I took a typing class, but I got mono during the first week of class, so I was sick and missed 3 weeks of school. But in typing class, they move on to a new lesson almost every day, so by the time I got over the mono (and I also had strep throat at the same time) and returned to class, everyone else was so far ahead that I ended up getting a pass/fail grade because there was no way I could catch up the missed lessons. So, I got this game for my Atari 800XL and by playing it, I eventually learned how to type on my own.

Awesome! The Windows XP era was in my opinion the last hurrah for excellent consumer-friendly PC gaming. There were outliers like Steam requirements (I remember lots of grumbling about that back in the day...how times change), MMOs and that godawful Games For Windows Live "service," but for the most part you could still buy feature complete physical games and play them online or offline with no strings attached. And what games they had to offer! It wasn't as mind-bogglingly diverse or experimental as the MS-DOS days, but the PC game library of the 2000s still contained a ridiculous number of phenomenal titles, many of which are still widely regarded as some of the best games of all time.

I actually still have my Socket 775 Pentium 4 PC setup albeit in bits! I'm planning to rebuild it and ensure everything still works! I also have a Socket 939 Opteron 180 setup still intact, but the XP install is broken at the moment; I'm planning on upgrading to an AM2+ setup, so I can make things a bit more efficient/less power-hungry! I'm not sure what CPU options I have at present, but I figure it's not going to be too distant from the Socket 939 board! Also, I plan to set up a few pairs of XP dual boots for future projects, with 2 pairs of laptops running XP along with Mandrake Linux 8.x and 9.x depending on the pair, as I want to compare gaming on XP to gaming on Linux, as I haven't really heard of any cases - at the time I came up with it, though not long after someone is doing a blog series similar to what I have planned, but different distro with no XP comparison - where people look at retro Linux gaming, as it's all focused on retro Windows gaming! I have actually been picking up physical Linux games released from the mid-late 90s to around 2010 (if I recall correctly, need to check) as it'd be interesting to compare the experiences; I also plan to use some digital copies of games too, acquired via legitimate (and not so legitimate!) means, as it's hard to get physical copies of certain games in Linux, though Windows versions are easier to get a hold of, and in some cases can be used to install the Linux version via an installer. Penultimately, my "RetroBox Project" uses a pair of HP t610 thin clients to run XP for better compatibility in conjunction with a more recent version of Linux to facilitate source ports running the games, which is backed up by an Nvidia GT 730 (if I recall correctly) to make sure it can run games with relative ease up to a certain point. As for why I have pairs? I want to give null modem play a go, as well as using crossover cables if I can get it to work! I'm pretty capable of building PCs and installing OSes and such, because I've been doing it for more than a couple of decades at this point! I'm going to stop my rambling for now as this is longer than I expected, although I will say is that the videos for the above (and related projects) won't be on this account/channel, rather my non-gameplay one, because it's not focused on gameplay, rather the hardware and software. Coincidentally, on that note, I can share my previous, current, and future experiences with you in the future in case it helps!

Great timing! I've been dabbling with Linux Mint on a cheap test laptop I bought on eBay, and I plan to make the switch for my regular computer in a month or two. Unfortunately I'll still have to use Windows on my work machine for my channel content, as Flashpoint archive doesn't play well with Linux.

That's the best way to get familiar with Linux - put it on an old machine so it doesn't affect your main PC and you can play around at your leisure to give yourself time to work with it.

If I were you, I'd find an old PC somewhere (any Core 2 Duo machine from 2007 or after would work) and put Linux on that. Don't dual boot or virtualise, keep your main PC with Windows on it and then it doesn't stop your normal workflow booting into Linux.

Yes, why not switch? You'll learn a lot using Linux, even if you go back to winblows or use them both. Learning new stuff is always good

Wow, what an absolute gem of a game, thanks for showing this off, this is crazy. I only knew of Xcom from the newer titles but this looks leagues better than any of the newer games, it has the microprose charm that made me love master of magic, and master of orion 1 and 2.

I'm 44 and I still play DOS games but usually the same games :-( MK1-3 are my recent go tos. Dune II and WarCraft are others. Sometimes I go back to OMF 2097, Hi-Octane or Screamer and occasionally some other games. A lot of my time is spent playing newer games but funnily enough remasters. Currently Doom 64 and Grim Fandango remasters take up most of my time.
