I played that game soooooooooooooooooo many countless hours in my youth, still one of the best memories from back then :)

This was a game I played a lot of as a kid and I'm generally not into racing games, but this is probably the one - other than Grand Turismo 3 and Burnout Revenge - that I played a LOT of and enjoyed. Such classic sound effects, instantly remember it all.

I remember this fondly. I played this on an XT.

The sounds brought me back in time! I played this lots on my childhood. In CGA, though... Edit: very Monaco ending...

It was always exciting, watching Monaco in my younger years. You knew something would go wrong, but you couldn't look away.

Oh wow colors, I only had the CGA version so all we got was white, black cyan and magenta lol

Always loved this one as a kid! :) The music was a lot better on C64/Amiga, but the PC canon jingle is where it's at for me. DSI were great! Going into the pit to change tires was another really nice feature. Would love to see that Indianapolis 500: The Race featured.

Well one of the benefits of being my Patron is that your wish is my command! I'll make sure that Indianapolis 500: The Race receives the same sort of treatment, very soon!

Played this game a lot along Test Driver, Stunts (not Stunt Driver), Indy 500 and Street Road. Then Microprose and Papyrus games later.

Impressive indeed for 1988! I can see why you were looking forward to playing this one. Your comments regarding realism detracting from player engagement rather than enhancing it is very relatable. I love combat flight and space sims from the late '80s to mid '90s, with their crude polygonal visuals and simplistic flight models (though they were still quite challenging on higher difficulties). I had a gradual falling out with the genre, however, as visuals became ever more photorealistic and developers began catering almost exclusively to the hardcore fans clamoring for the utmost realism and complexity. Before long it felt like you needed to have graduated from an actual flight school in order to wrap your head around how to play the games, and for the titles that didn't there was still the photorealistic visuals that failed to engage the brain like the simple polygons of old did.

Yes, totally agree. Even if they were also the peak on realism of the time, they never forgot they were games. I still play those games today. Fortunately there seems to be a comeback of lite-sims lately with games as Tiny Combat Arena, Helicopter Gunship DEX... and as for F1, I enjoy New Star GP.

I'd have to agree. I loved the Jet Fighter series of games. Realistic stats, arcade approachability.

I'm glad that so many people get what I was banging on about (while being interrupted repeatedly by the races ending). The closer you get to photorealism, the easier it is to be taken out by something random that doesn't feel 'real'. The more bells and whistles you tack on, the more distracted you get from the core game. There's a happy medium between simpler graphics and your brain filling in the blanks that so many game designers fail to understand. I think this style was perfected in Grand Prix 2, which introduced texture mapping but didn't overegg the proverbial pudding.

Oddly enough, I've actually played Indy 500, albeit on a 286... Also had no idea what I was doing at the time, as I was quite young! Also, this is one of the games I recall working on an 8088 CPU, but obviously you'd need a VGA variant of the 808x mini laptops, unless you attach an EGA or VGA card to the Book 8088 v1.0!
