I ran into this problem about 8 years ago and actually talked to the guy that used to sell the custom BIOS. He told me he doesn't have the distribution rights anymore because Phoenix stopped supporting it and he cant open source it because it has a lot of Phoenix and Gateway proprietary code. Unfortunately an EIDE BIOS card wont work because the onboard controller can't be disabled. The solution is what I think you're mentioning when you said "disc and bios combination" @4:45. These are called Drive Overlays or DDOs and OnTrack is a popular one, basically it does some magic to trick the BIOS to boot a "small" drive that has a boot manager that can load and boot the rest of the hard drive.
