If the differential is not leaking, just use a suction pump to remove old fluid. Saves a bunch of time and unnecessary effort. The suction pumps cost about $15 to $20, simple to use, and readily available. The pump will remove about 95% of the fluid that would be removed by taking the cover off. If it ain't broke, don't fix it. Just a quick and simple option if you determine it works for your particular circumstances. Many shops do the same to save quite a bit of time and effort. The pumps come with a secure one foot flexible clear section of medical type sanitary tubing which easily dips into the fill plug opening. Of course, your method allows for more complete draining and cleansing.

If you wanna REALLY "save time", just skip the job altogether !! 😁 A proper (Factory Shop Manual) differential fluid change requires the REMOVAL of the cover, CLEANING of the accunulated metal shavings, and REPLACEMENT of any gaskets. If ya wanna do it RIGHT, then do it RIGHT !! SHORT-cuts give us LONG-lasting problems.
@blupupher6 ай бұрын
@@SlikLizrd Totally agree. If you are going to do it, do it right. If you have ever pulled a diff cover, you know you will not get all the crap out in the very bottom of the diff with a suction gun. It's not like you are doing this every 5,000 miles, so not really a big deal.

When I worked in shops a few master techs would spray the diff with carb cleaner, Would that be a bad idea? I've done a fluid drain once on my 02 marquis but I didn't spray the differential. What's your take on it?

Carburetor cleaner is also fine I’ve used it myself and had no issues. You’re fine don’t lose sleep from that just next time clean the cover to remove the debris.

The cleaner, the better. You don't want any grit in those gears. It also looks professional if the area is clean and dry. It also helps in spotting any new leaks.

That's the fill plug you're removing and reinstalling, calling it a drain plug may confuse some people.
@SlikLizrd6 ай бұрын
CORRECT !! It's NOT a "drain plug" !! The stock 8.8-inch Ford differentials have NO drain plugs. The diff cover MUST be removed for a proper cleaning and fluid change. A "short cut" is a road to disaster. 😁

What is a additive?
@SlikLizrd7 ай бұрын
For automotive applications, an "ADDITIVE" is usually a chemical that is ADDED to our engine oils and/or other lubricants. "Additives" are for making our lubricants perform differently and/or last longer -- Additives are used in Cooling Systems, too. Most "Additives" do little or nothing to improve the performance of your vehicle.
