Stole it from a charity...it would be ironic if the owner died in a fuel tank fire that has killed so many cops. Odd that Scotty is unaware of this, he certainly should remember all the lawsuits that were paid by Ford to LEO's in every state.Unlike the Pinto, the Panther fuel tank fix was prohibitively expensive. So, it was never done on any of them.

When I found out they were ending production on these cars I bought a 2011 Mercury Grand Marquis in 2012 with 20K miles on it. It has 220K trouble free miles on it now. It has been the most reliable and cheapest car I have ever owned to maintain. My son will be 16 next year his first car will be that 2011 Mercury Grand Marquis.

Your mileage is about what I got in my trips to the beach. I actually got 28 consistently on the 220 mile trip with some of it going two little towns where I had to slow down to 45 and each having a stoplight. 22MPH on the Highway, as stated by Scotty, isn't correct, at least in my long experience with my 99 GM.

Had an 85 Grand Marquis. It was mint. White with red velour interior. My wife spun out in the rain and wrecked it. We were then gifted a 2001 Lincoln Continental. Not mint but ran great. She wrecked that one too. I then bought a 2005 Grand Marquis with 76,000 miles on it from the estate of a little old lady, 98 yrs. old, who passed away. The car is perfect. Needless to say, my wife will never be allowed to drive it.

I daily drive a 2000 towncar I bought 7 years ago for 300 bucks. It was a retired Vet who long longer had use of his legs and had been sitting in his driveway in south florida with a widow stuck down for 2 years. All I had to do to get it started was put a new battery in it. It was surreal watching the air suspension blow itself back up. Since then, All I've done outside of basic maintenance is replace a fuel pump and swap out the air suspension bags with a set of monroe struts after a few years since they developed leaks. Collectively this has cost me 500 bucks in repairs and has given me nearly 50k miles and is still going strong.

Just keep an eye on the underbody/frame and keep it rust free and it can go pretty much forever. Sure, parts will wear out over time but, those can be replaced for cheap compared to most cars.

You will probably have to replace the Ball Joints which from the factory do not have grease fittings. (IF they do they were replaced already). Once they start making noise - do not hesitate. I would replace the Shock Absorbers as well. They are probably bad by now

I've had 1988, 1995, 2004 Grand Marquis. All retired due to New England road salt damage. Engines and transmissions still strong. My current 2007 is a Southern car experiencing its first New England winter, no rust at all. Should last me at least 10 years.

For 29 years I worked for a Cab/car service company & my boss bought all the crown Vicks and grand Marquis used or old cop cars. In the NYC area. They went 400+ thousand miles with minimum service. Problems, the famous intake manifold, fuel pumps, rear axle bearings. Once in a while the oil filter housing gasket that leaked. Did lots of ball joints.

@@warrenwinslow4266 i have a hard time finding cars less than 15 years old that i would buy... but hey what i want is v8 rwd and seat in the back. what would be perfect for me is the crow vics... or even better the cougar/tbird after they put indepedent suspension in the back of the mustang and it became an overprice POS i wouldnt want one. the 2005-2014 is the last real mustang in my opinion. ford should just come back with the old style lineup pony cars/compact/midsize/fullzise all available in different trims with 6 and v8 and all rwd...all low tech and way cheaper. everyone and his cousin would want one id be happy to buy a brand new old style 2 doors fairlane to fullfill my midsize need. they'll never do it because they make the cash with the govt and not with customers ... so if you want a regular car buy a pick up they say...even those are going downhill

Love the old panther platform cars. The first car I ever daily drove was my grandmother's 2000 Lincoln Town Car that she let me use after she could no longer drive. Great car, only real complaint was that you had to - as Scotty says - aim it in the general direction you wanted to go instead of having tight, responsive steering. Would love to get a blacked out CVPI with push bar one day - cool looking cars.

The 2003+ chassis redesign addressed this exact issue. My '05 P71 can slalom pretty well. Honestly it's not going to slalom like a Corvette, it's heavy and still has some body roll, but it's definitely very good in the handling department. It doesn't wallow in the corners the way the older ones did.

If you have a newer car you want to keep looking nice, something like this is nice to have. Drive the cheap car to places like the grocery store where it will get door dings, keep the miles down on your new car. Also, if your insurance company has a multi-car discount, it might not cost much to insure the extra vehicle.

Scotty, here's yet another Quick Oil Change horror story. I have never had a problem with one of these quick change places until last week. I noticed that I had a small oil leak? Then within a week, it became a large oil leak. So I looked under the car and realized that the generic white oil filter had a gash in the upper backside, which was spraying oil while the car was running. I took it back to the Quick oil change place and they tried to deny they put a defective oil filter on my car. But they changed the oil again, and I provided a Mobile 1 oil filter. Needless to say that I will go back to changing my own oil.

@@Camoflaugepencil That's why when changing your oil, prime the filter with oil. Make sure the old gasket is off where the oil filter goes on. Clean the mating surface where the new filter goes on. Most important, put a little oil on the new rubber gasket before installing the new filter. Don't over tighten the filter! Start the vehicle and check for leaks. Remember too, where disposable rubber gloves to keep your hands clean, so your skin has less chance of absorbing the old oil or any other chemicals and getting into your body.

Can't say I disagree, my grandfathers 2007 Mercury Grand Marquis is still running strong and he has no plans to get a more modern car. I used to make fun of it, but it truly is an F-150 in car form, (trunk is massive) and the pillow soft ride cant be found in any newer design. He even says he can get 25 mpg on highway trips which isnt bad for such a big heavy car with a V8. Even so, all the money he's saved on repairs/monthly car payment all these years can buy many many tanks of gas.
