This video was originally made for the Happy Console Gamer channel as part of a larger collaboration--link will be in the description! He asked for around five minutes, so I tried to keep this as short as possible, but as you see, "mission failed." I plan on doing separate videos on each of the PCE Tengai Makyou entries and beyond since I now have complete playthroughs recorded for them (and I love the games), so if/when that happens, I may remove this video...unless it somehow gets picked up by the almighty algorithm on KZbin...but let's be honest, that's never happening on this channel.

You'd think that with classic gaming having a sizeable amount of interest among people willing to shell out money for even minis and anniversary editions for consoles, and pay for the games on Switch, Steam, and mobile app stores that maybe, just maybe they might want to republish or remake these older games. Just about every KZbin channel that covers JRPGs, among other games that were never localized, or had one that promised a sequel that never came out because the console was discontinued, so many people are wishing that the games might finally officially be made for their regions. Especially with consoles like the PC Engine where it can be rare to find a rom that has an English translation. But really, today, with so many ways to easily republish old games, and not have all the hardware restrictions and cartidge manufacturing and distribution issues when it comes to how to revise them, why not republish the games and see how they do?

Tengai Makyō II is not only one of the greatest RPG ever released but also arguably the reason Square decided its future would be on CD-ROM (i.e. PlayStation) so its influence on the entire industry has been unfathomable. When you have more time to dedicate on each game, I hope you also get to explain the influence of Momotarō Densetsu on the Tengai Makyō series.
@ImportGamingFTW3 жыл бұрын
That would make sense, I think a lot of the Super CD stuff in particular showed the superiority of the format regarding the direction games were heading in the era. As far as the Momotarou Densetsu influence, aside from the fun & funny take on Japanese culture and mythology and paving the way for more Hudson role-playing games, what would you say are some of the other influences? I've always thought of Tengai Makyou's closest gaming counterparts as Momotarou and Goemon.

I have a few magazine interviews from the Tengai Makyou team to read through as well, so hopefully I can go into some interesting development and design topics with the videos. That's great news--I've never played any of Tom's translations, but I have a lot of respect for him, particularly for his work on the Goemon projects. Hell, if ZIRIA's English patch will be out soon, I might just skip a video on that game and go straight to MANJIMARU, since I'm sure the bigger YT gaming channels, as well as the RPG-focused ones, will cover the games to much more exposure--and arguably a lot better--than mind would.

2:40 The names Jiraiya, Tsunade and Orochimaru actually come from a classic tale and 19th century novel, Jiraiya Gōketsu Monogatari ("The Tale of the Gallant Jiraiya"). They are also central in the manga/anime Naruto (looks like you haven't seen it?). In all versions (it looks like), Jiraiya commands a frog, Orochimaru has "snake magic", and Tsunade is a close companion. I actually didn't know this and was very surprised when i heard the names at 2:40, actually already at 0:45, which looks amazingly close to Naruto, also with the headband. Nice, are they still there? I thought they had been removed, but I'll give it a look and probably download them just on principle.

@@ImportGamingFTW Just checked and both 1 and 2 are still available. Thats probably a smart idea to have a backup based on how expensive Pc Engine games are.

I thought Mr. Joe Hisaishi's first video game score was for Ni No Kuni. That's awesome that he started with this old series, though I'm assuming he didn't stick with it. If he _did_ end up scoring the Xbox 360 Ziria remake though (the last game in the series?), that would be pretty cool though! That 360 remake was the first _I_ heard of the series, and honestly it looked lame. Let's face it; Ziria 360 is REALLY underwhelming looking, but it still got some attention for being an early JRPG on the system... though it quickly got overshadowed by literally everything else. That early 360 JRPG lineup was a beast - Eternal Sonata, Enchanted Arms, Last Remnant, Blue Dragon, Lost Odyssey, etc. If nothing else though, that game did make me aware of the series in general and I ended up learning about the older, more charming series entries on the PCE and Sega Saturn because of it. Always a pleasure to see _anybody_ dive into any of these games on KZbin, but this is _especially_ good - no one can beat an Import Gaming FTW video for stuff like this :) Although I'm absolutely checking out the Happy Console Gamer video on this series and am eager to see how Kid Shoryuken did with his segment too.

Yeah, in the original draft for this video I talked about all the remakes and ports, and went into the 360 game's shortcomings, but also the interesting bits as well. Eventually, after I'm done talking about the classic Tengai Makyou games, I hope to do a video on that one. Xbox 360 was a beast for RPGs and shooters (FPS or STG), and Tengai Makyou ZIRIA didn't make much of a splash when it came out. That being said, however, it's lack of success and limited print run has made it one of the console's most expensive games. Thanks for watching, and I hope you enjoyed Kid Shoryuken's part as well!

9:10 Oh yeah, bottom right corner! It's a great game, one of my favorite, if not my absolute favorite, fighter on Neo Geo.

Does anyone have a suggestion for what version of the original game we should play? I bought the original CD-ROM version but then afterwards I realized there was a Super CD-ROM version. I'm not sure if there are any major changes with the newer Super CD-ROM release? I'm very new to the PC Engine.

Wow, This franchise is so interesting and quirky. It looks to fun play too but too bad I can't understand and speak Japanese :( I even doubt Konami USA will ever want to do some kind of translated collection of this. I was introduced to this franchise from the Neo Geo fighting game, Surprised You didn't mentioned that here. This and Ganbare Goemon are perfect inspirations for a Comic I'm currently working on :)

Keep hope alive, if there's a revival in Japan, the way things go these days, I would be more surprised if Konami DOESN'T localize! Also, my original script for this video mentioned EVERYTHING, but would have made for a 20+ minute video, so I cut it out. You can see me show the Neo Geo CD game at the end, though. Perhaps one of the reasons I love Tengai Makyou is that it reminds me so much of Ganbare Goemon. Working on a comic? Sounds awesome, best of luck!

Why, oh why are there no fan translations fot at least one of the first 2 or kabuki side story?? I wish I had that type of skill 😕 Just so the rest of us can have a chance to play this 😭

It's shocking, really...especially considering the other things that have been translated over the years. But there is hope, I hear something is coming down the pipeline soon!

This is one series I know next to nothing about. Shame it's the sort of game series that's unlikely to ever get modern re-releases in the west due to how much translation work it'd need. Although if Moon can get a translated release maybe these can.
@ImportGamingFTW3 жыл бұрын
I'm keeping hope alive, but then again I am an idiot. I feel like eventually all of these big series will get localized, as long as there's a Japanese re-release to coincide with it. I wonder how Moon's English adaptation fared regarding sales?

Looks like a pretty fun series! I can't believe I haven't heard of it before. Then again, I'm not that extremely familiar with Japanese-only RPGs. Too bad the PSP collection is extremely expensive. Even the second game for the DS is up there. It's more affordable for the GameCube, but... that version feels a bit cheap to me, judging by videos. Also, a new Import Gaming FTW and a new Chrontendo episode in the same hour? I must be dreaming.
@ImportGamingFTW3 жыл бұрын
I know you're really quite the gaming scholar and a big time aficionado of Japanese culture, so I'm surprised you haven't looked into Tengai Makyou. But yeah, then again RPGs aren't for everyone. I think currently in Japan the PSP collection and Tengai II DS run for about the same price. It's the Neo Geo AES cart for the fighting game that's pretty nuts, wish I had picked it up even a couple of years ago at a local game store when it was like $120 complete, which I thought then was even ridiculous. Anyway, glad you enjoyed the video!
