I built something like this in high school. It was a team project for engineering. My partners dad was an EE and helped us design it. We placed it in my station wagon that had a really good audio system with a 15" and 2 10" woofers along with 2 way 6 1/2" and 6 x 9s.. it worked well but made you feel sick when you had it on for too long. The idea came from when he had the left channel out of phase of the right side and it cancelled out the sound which tripped us out. It was one of many projects that the instructor kept

Get the memory foam style plugs at stores like Shoppers Drug mart, or any hardware store. Squeeze thin, insert into ear, and let it expand; cuts most noise (except what comes through the body of course). I love using them for sleeping at night. Much easier to fall asleep in dead silence. ;) (especially if every little thing can wake you up)

The absolute best earplugs i've had are Hansaplast noise protection earplugs, no friction noise whatsoever when you move your jaw or your head and very high comfort, very little to no blood vessel noise too. Second best were 3M orange earplugs. Everything else is basically not even worth trying, Ohropax and store brand are fine but nothing special, and yellow ones from the pharmacy were just the absolute worst, like they're stuck in last century. If you want to listen to music, a decent on-ears noise blocker is Urbanears Zinken. The memory foam pads conform to the ears surprisingly airtightly after a minute or two. They don't have active noise cancellation at all, fully passive, but as far as that goes, they'll easily beat smaller Bose active ones, and better music reproduction too. Some people also just get construction site earmuffs and wear their in-ears underneath, that's supposed to be pretty good too.

If they wanted to make an attempt, they could have at least put a microphone on it, inverted the sound it was hearing, and played that out of the speaker. It would have possibly had some actual effect.
@OLLE37704 жыл бұрын
@@turkeyboy5543 Probably not. The device would have to know the distance to both of your ears to the speaker(s) and the microphone(s) and all noise sources - as well as any reflecting surfaces and possibly generate an inverted sound emitted from the speaker(s) (again taking reflecting surfaces into account) travelling a little faster than the speed of sound (processing the incoming soundwaves and inverting them isn't done in zero time). If you are in the middle, the device is to your left, and the noise comes from the right you'll already heard the noise before the device can do anything about it besides amplifying or adding to it (adding in context = echoing). Well insulted headphones have a chance to do it. This device - not so much.

About 12 years ago, I came across Flat Speakers. I reasoned that they could come close to noise cancelling for room, though in a very focussed area. As they have greater surface, they create flatter waves (not the spherical you saw in your diagram). Of course every room will have its unique topology. You could have a microphone at the "bubble centre", close to your head for example. Then eliminate noise that way. Anyway, it was just a thought experiment but didn't get in to too much detail. My son (9yo) and I love your videos. He is really inspired. Your humour makes electronics very accessible to all.

Even the setup you used to demonstrate active sound cancellation is the best case scenario as if you are trying to cancel out external noise, you would first have to detect it using a microphone, process it so that it ignores the desirable signal produced by the speakers(which will cause a infinite loop of emitting and detecting signals) , amplify it and then output it. Even if you circuit is extremely fast, it will still have a phase difference which will cause superposition of the noise and cancelling signal causing formation of nodes and antinodes. So you will end up with some places with near silence and some with even more noise than before. That is why active noise cancellation works only on small apparatuses and that too when paired with passive noise cancellation.

Well - you gotta be a moron to "buy" anything form kickstarter and expecting it to be good. If the product really would work as claimed than they would have sold it already or got some investors. But as there are pretty much no requirements for crowdfunding you will see things like selffilling waterbottles, moon-wave blockers and other bullshit.
@Ameto7 жыл бұрын
Not necessarily everything from Kickstarter is bad. Getting funding from private sources is either expensive (loans) or requires the individual to give up part of their profits in return. Kickstarter is a great medium to get some great projects out for cheap, but you should really have some suspicion on projects like this and research if what they're claiming is even plausible before supporting them.

I was at band camp when I was in high school. They played the music from a recording but as you indicated in the initial setup, they had one speaker wired in reverse. It was an open field and if you stood in exactly the right place the only sound you heard was the echos off the houses in the distance. I have been intrigued by this ever since. Magnavox found a way to cancel engine noise into a microphone (aircraft) in WWII I think using similar tech. I want to make silent drones… still researching. Thx!!

The idea of noise cancelling only works under certain constrained situations. It only works if the phase is perfect and phase varies with frequency and speaker placement. If the camera mic is probably mono, you could probably find a perfect spot where that single pure tone was completely removed. But change the speaker placement a tiny bit and all bets are off.

That "privacy bubble" function is particularly high-grade nonsense. Noise cancellation through a wall is at least in principle plausible even though it will be near impossible to achieve in practice, especially with only one compact device. The privacy bubble on the other hand can not work even as an idea - not with a single device anyway. You'd need a complex web of microphones and speakers in that whole 3d space to pull that off. There really ought to be more controls on these sorts of projects. All the scams and hairbrained schemes really sours an otherwise great system that has produced a lot of cool products.

Let's not misunderstand their "privacy bubble" feature though. It doesn't cancel the noise you're making. It plays back a sound that sounds like a crowd of people yammering away in a restaurant to make it harder for other people to eavesdrop on your conversion. You can do the same by using a jackhammer while talking to someone, except that'll be more effective.

Loved the video. Only for correctness, I guess that the wave drawing is correct only if you're sending the so-called continuous wave or modulated wave, basically only a single tone. As soon as the signal is modulated there is no more canceling on the "diagonal" points he drawn.

7:10 Well hold on a minute, the vibrating surface of a wall or window is connected at its boarders so it wouldn't produce parallel waves like that. Rather it would be closer to a Kirchhoff-Love vibrating plate with supported edges, meaning the wall/window would vibrate in different modes depending on the frequency. For mechanical vibrations, the n = 1 fundamental frequency mode would contain the most energy and oscillate with the greatest peak-to-peak distance at its midpoint. It makes me wonder if it is in fact possible to dampen the fundamental frequency transmitted through a window using something similar to noise cancelling, but rather than relying on playing a sound canceling signal into the room itself the device could counter the surface's vibrations at the fundamental frequency preventing most of the sound from be transmitted through it. The main drawback of this being the fact you would need a noise canceling device stuck to the middle of every surface you would want to prevent the fundamental frequency from coming through. So for a window with four panes of glass, you would need a device placed at the center of all four panes for it to work. There are also pink noise generators that produce a mix of frequencies within the human voice range to raise the noise floor within that frequency range, effectively reducing the transmission distance of those frequencies. Meaning it should be harder to hear people talking across the room. But granted that is just creating noise over noise, there is no canceling going on. Pink noise is just more pleasant sounding than a leaf blower, which would do the same thing. I just realized that he kinda said some of that after I typed out that comment but oh well.
@MikkoRantalainen2 жыл бұрын
I understood the red lines to represent sound waves from distant source which makes them appear practically parallel to you locally. You cannot create similar parallel waves locally to cancel the audio. The only make to create practically parallel waves would be to have nearly infinite amount of devices attached to every single surface. You cannot have just one device because even if it could cause correct vibrations, those vibrations move at the speed defined by your medium (be it glass, dry wall or wood) and cannot be used to create parallel waves out from the the surface. If you had syncronized vibration emitters every 1 cm in all directions, then you could generate parallel waves for frequencies lower than the 1 cm wavelength of vibration in that medium. However, even then you would have (heavy?) resonations from the connection points of your now-vibrating medium to the environment. Imagine having 1 m² glass panel resonating at 2 kHz. It will make nasty sound against the window borders which cannot nicely move with the glass.

This saved me a lot of effort. Been losing my mind the last few weeks after new downstairs neighbour leaving their extractor fans on 24/7. Dragged my mattress into a closet at 2am last night just to try to finally get something like sleep. Today I was wondering, since the tone is constant, couldn't I just play the same tone on some speakers in my bedroom and adjust the phase until it cancelled out? Not only did EBOOM show why that's not possible, but the neighbour finally turned the $%^& thing off _during the video!!_ And now my ears are ringing from the sudden silence... So apparently watching this video is the best solution 😂

I doubt this would work even in an anechoic chamber. It didn't affect a pure tone coming from one source (not counting the reflections). How do people expect it to work in a place like a restaurant, with multiple sources and all of their reflections? Also, I'm very curious about the restaurant noise it was playing. How is a random sound of a restaurant going to help in noise cancelling? It has to be exactly the same signal for active noise cancellation to work. It can't counter vibrations on a surface properly because any surface has multiple resonant frequencies. Let's not forget that if the speaker (which is crap) can't even properly reproduce the entire frequency range, it won't cancel any low frequencies or extreme highs, both of which are major annoyance factors in ambient noise.
