Mission impossible was originally a TV series starring Peter Graves from 1966-1973, then they brought it back for a few years in the late 80s. In the series the mission was always given on a small reel to reel tape player that looked like a Walkman. Of course it blew up after the message was heard.

One thing really great about this film is that it does not use any off-camera trickery. For example, when Ethan recounts the second IMF team ALL of the flashback footage was in the film prior to the flashback. And when Jim shoots himself you can clearly see his left wrist is turned in and it is obvious he shot himself, you just do not pick up on it when it happens. This movie is written, edited and framed in a very sophisticated manner for a US blockbuster-type movie.

While the movie has some very iconic scenes, what irks me is the fact that the TV series was always about a team, and the first thing they do is to kill the team. Also the team leader from the series is the traitor? Additionally, its a bit strange that Lalo Schifrin didn‘t do the music. He still composed soundtracks until a few years ago. His theme is a stroke of genius and probably one of the more well known ones with a 5/4 time signature. I forgot how many dutch angles were in this movie, especially during and after the meeting with Kittridge. Dutch angles are typically used when the film maker wants the viewer to feel uncomfortable or to indicate that something isn‘t right. Emilio Estevez is the son of Martin Sheen and the brother of Charlie Sheen, and Estevez is actually their real family name. As some side trivia, there are two actors named Michael Douglas, but since actors should have unique names in Hollywood, one of them had to change their stage name to Michael Keaton. The latter once said in an interview that he uses his real name to order a driver etc., and people are typically disappointed when the „wrong“ Michael Douglas shows up.

5:07 The solo stuff in the first two movies is a *deviation* from the premise of the original TV show. Starting with the 3rd movie, they partly return to a team-oriented structure, although still with far too much focus on one character, relative to in the show.
@VerowakReacts Жыл бұрын
I feel like the team approach is more interesting than just having 1 main character. MI:2 was solely focused on Ethan, the others just seemed like an afterthought
@peterknutsen3070 Жыл бұрын
@@VerowakReacts True. On the other hand, large teams can get unwieldy and lead to superficial portrayals. I've come to rather like the first "Ocean's 11" film (the recent one, not the ancient one), but a lot of the 11 guys we don't really get to know. Starting with MI3, they do settle down into more of a team shape, with Hunt and Luther joined by a couple of other characters that persist at least into MI6, and probably all the way into MI8. I don't really mind movies or shows with just one main character, though. My main objection is that the movies don't fully respect the premise of the original TV show. I think they'd have been more interesting if they had, with Cruise portraying a young genius caper planner in the vein of Jim Phelps from the show, but then occassionally having to step in and do action scenes when something goes wrong. Or they could have tried to create an original movie franchise with no ties to the TV show.

Hey, Veronique! Truly amazing catch with the knife! Equally amazing mix-up of Michael Douglas and Emilio Estevez! Lol. Those two dudes are from different generations, acting dynasties and couldn't have more wildly different filmographies! This franchise is based on the 1960s TV SERIES starring Peter Graves and its 1980s revival. Both runs of the series were more about long cons by a small team of operatives such as the opening set piece and relied on the gimmick of wearing disguises and utilizing cool spy gadgets. The movies retain those elements but are more about white-knuckle stunts performed by Cruise himself! The LALO SCHIFRIN score is one of TV's most iconic themes and never fails to set the electrifying pace! What many people don't realize is that JON VOIGHT is playing JIM PHELPS, the team leader of the TV series played by PETER GRAVES in the '60s original and '80s reboot! That means the hero of the series turns into the villain of the movie! Graves was actually approached for a cameo but he didn't like the twist about his signature character and declined to participate. Phelps kills his young wife because his ego couldn't tolerate her being attracted to his young protege. He wanted absolute loyalty and commitment from her which she betrayed by coming to Ethan's defense. Having her work in close proximity to a guy like Ethan, their September-May relationship was doomed from the get-go! Lol. The hot youngsters' mutual attraction was evident in the first scene! The series is mostly consistently excellent and is one of the best action franchises ever made! The first three films are products of their directors bearing their undeniable signatures. This was every inch a BRIAN DEPALMA film with POV shots, flashback sequences and low-angle vantage points. DePalma was most definitely inspired by JULES DASSIN's heist films for the famous Langley caper scene. In both 1955's "RIFIFI" and 1964's "TOPKAPI", the intricate thefts are plotted out for the audience, executed in SCORELESS SILENCE, initiated from a ceiling ingress and nearly foiled with a slip. It would be highly inadvisable to skip to the new release before seeing all the previous films as there is a continuous narrative. TOM CRUISE films worth seeing besides "Rain Man" and the "M:I" films: The Outsiders Risky Business The Color of Money Top Gun and Top Gun: Maverick Far and Away Born on the Fourth of July The Firm A Few Good Men Jerry Maguire Tropic Thunder Eyes Wide Shut Vanilla Sky Oblivion Edge of Tomorrow Minority Report The Last Samurai Collateral Valkyrie Knight and Day Rock of Ages Jack Reacher 2 MICHAEL DOUGLAS movies worth seeing: Coma The China Syndrome The Star Chamber Romancing the Stone Fatal Attraction Wall Street and Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps Black Rain Basic Instinct Falling Down Disclosure The Ghost and the Darkness The Game Traffic Haywire Beyond the Reach Behind the Candelabra Ant-Man & Ant-Man and the Wasp The Kominsky Method

This is a really interesting movie; nothing I've seen is quite like it. As you noted, it keeps things quite vague. I think it was very experimental at the time, because nobody was quite sure how to migrate that TV show (or any TV show) into movie form. About the aquarium running scene, I was just watching interviews with the actors of the new MI movie, and one of them said that if they could do any Tom Cruise stunt, they would love to do the aquarium run, because it really was a giant wave of water right behind him hahaha awesome! One of the things lost with modern streaming services seems to be the past emphasis on "extras" included in DVDs/bluray/etc. The extras (like behind the scenes video, removed scenes, interviews, etc) were a way to sell movies, and movies would even compete for which had the best extras. You could have HOURS of extra stuff to watch, including a little printed booklet about the movie. Directors and actors would even record their OWN reactions to the movie as audio tracks that you could watch along with the movie -- perhaps the progenitor of modern youtube reaction videos! I think there's a place for YT reactors to react to movie extras, at least for the most popular movies that have really good extras. One could even poll their viewers or reddit for a list of movies with the best extras and pull from that. Keep up the good work Vero; you are really shining through these reactions! I think you can go as far and get as big as you want with it!

My father was a huge fan of the original TV series this film was based on, so I grew up watching Mission: Impossible, and even watched the re-booted series in the 1980's. This film was originally intended to be a continuation of the original show and the producers originally approached actor Peter Graves to reprise his performance as Jim Phelps. Graves was completely against the idea of the movie making the hero character he played over the course of two decades into the film's villain and turned down the role. As a result, the MI film series can be considered an alternate reality to that of the 60's and 80's TV shows. Making Jim Phelps the villain was a controversial move to fans of the original show. It really took until the third film for the movies to find their own groove.

When I see Jean Reno mess up, I just think of the film where he was the best at what he does: Léon: The Professional. But then I sometimes think of the movie: For Rosanna (or) Rosanna's Grave, where he breaks from his typecasting of films like this one by casting him in a comedy. As for the moving of the arms, that was all about balance. He was inches from the floor and the sudden drop left his body in a state where it would most likely tip and touch the floor. He had to compensate to restore balance. However, it's more likely one will overcompensate, and then need to move some more, and so on. You doomed the team. You expected Tom to work alone, and were surprised to see him with a team of people. Their minutes were numbered from that moment on. But not for too much beyond that, I guess. I appreciated the trapeze/trapees. The wind on top of the train was appreciated. It made that seem much more realistic than other movies. However, the helicopter part was still not quite to my liking, despite being cool. The movement of the blades looked incorrect. It would also be exceptionally challenging to maintain a hover in a confined tunnel, since it would have to so suddenly reduce lift almost entirely to avoid smashing into the top of the tunnel. Just like the balancing act earlier, it would take a moment to balance out how much lift to provide, since air sucked from the top of the tunnel and pushed to the bottom would create a slight vacuum above and pressure below much more than in normal flight. Balancing that within a second or so would seem like an...impossible mission.

My biggest critique of this film is that there is the sudden tonal shift of 'these are people with highly specialized skills in an intense psychological thriller spy movie' to 'it I'd now a super hero-esque action film with ridiculous feats', and it happens riiiiight when Ethan jumps the shark... I mean, onto the helicopter. This leads directly into my critique of part 2, which will show up over there on that video!

0:23 Do you have any familiarity with the 1960s TV show, or the 1980s reboot of the show, that these movies are based on? As for my favourite Tom Cruise movie, it’s hard to pick one. He’s a great actor (whatever crazy religion he’s into, and his weird marriages), but often his movie scripts don’t fully utilize all his talents. Two TC movies I highly recommend are “Mission Impossible 3” with an amazing villain (as you noticed) or the drama “A Few Good Men”. A slightly lower tier movie is “The Firm”. I can’t actually recall any TC movie where I’ve felt like I wanted to be compensated for the time I spent watching it. But they tend not to stand out a lot. The quote… No clue. I have a pretty good memory, so it’s probably from a movie I’ve never watched.

@@VerowakReacts "Minority Report" is pretty good too, but start with "A Few Good Men". I usually don't like dramas at all (unless it's a thriller-drama, or a science fiction drama, or a something-drama), but that one is a huge exception.

There are a lot of good Tom Cruise movies, a large number of them action films. The Mission Impossible movies just get better and better (for the most part). For SciFi I would have to go with either Minority Report or Edge of Tomorrow (some people rag on War of the Worlds and Oblivion, but I like both of them as well). For drama I'd say The Last Samurai and Rain Man. Courtroom drama, either The Firm or A Few Good Men. Romantic comedy, probably Jerry Maguire. For straight up comedy, you can't miss is smaller, but memorable (and almost unrecognizable) turn in Tropic Thunder. Horror - Interview with the Vampire. There are a number of other films he's been in, some memorable, others less so.
@zmarko Жыл бұрын
IMO, even though I think he's weird, Tom Cruise has THE best ratio of hits to total films for huge movie stars I grew up on. If you look at his filmography, he honestly hasn't done a whole ton of films. But he definitely give 110% to every film, and (usually) it shows in the finished product. If you're looking for excellent Cruise films to react to, just go through his filmography and point your finger. Sure, there are a few not great films (The Mummy, Eyes Wide Shut), but for the most part his track record is rock solid with choosing films. As for my favorite Cruise films, it's a seriously tough choice. Rain Man, and Mission Impossible: Fallout are probably my favorites. Also, not sure if you knew, but at least later in his career (mid-90's and on), Cruise does most of his stunts, if not ALL of them. Some of them are bat-shit crazy stunts also.

38:13 IMDb Trivia used to be better, but in recent years, a lot of people have started adding boring entries that really interest no one, and also often redundant entries restating previous trivia items. The good stuff is still there, but there’s a lot of garbage I need to scroll past (both genuine garbage, but also more and more stuff about which other movies or movie franchises certain actors have appeared in, especially now that everyone has been in at least one MCU movie), and I’m often using my smartphone, which means having to scroll past garbage is slow and annoying.

M:I 2 is considered the weakest of the bunch (it's cheesy, in an early 2000s action movie sort of way), but M:I 3 and onwards is where the real fun begins.
@VerowakReacts Жыл бұрын
I'm very curious to see why MI:2 is the weakest. It's also very impressive that the movies in the franchise get better over time
@b.u.l.1734 Жыл бұрын
@@VerowakReacts M:I 2 was directed by John Woo, who was a very prolific Hong Kong action movie director at the time, so there's quite a bit of over the top action sequences in the film that are very typical of his style (car explosions, lots of slo-mo, dual-wielding handguns, random doves appearing during dramatic scenes, long and intense stares during the romantic scenes, etc.). It's definetly a significant tonal shift from Brian De Palma's more methodical and slower-paced first movie. Things change for the better in M:I 3 though, thanks to the more kinetic and witty directing style of J.J. Abrams (his movie directorial debut, btw). That movie became the template the next ones followed (much more emphasis on the team dynamics and the spy/cool gadgets stuff, humanizing Ethan a lot more, the crazier stunts...). However, the real MVP of these more recent movies is Christopher McQuarrie, a really brilliant writer/director (he wrote 'The Usual Suspects', 'Valkyrie' and 'Edge of Tomorrow', among other things) who came in to rewrite certain aspects that weren't originally working in the 4th M:I movie (which was directed by Brad Bird, from 'The Incredibles' fame). That movie turned out so well that Cruise hand-picked him to write and direct M:I 5, M:I 6 and M:I 7, which will be divided into two movies (7 part 1 comes out this July). He's the one who has truly elevated this franchise.
@TheMadMurf Жыл бұрын
The whole series is definitely worth a watch, though they become much more about action and less about intrigue (still pretty good stories, though). In my opinion, the second movie is garbage, but they really start taking off after that. I really loved the flashback as Ethan is talking with Kittridge in the restaurant, because it shows us elements that were in the original scene that we simply missed since we were focused on something else.

@Minion_of_Cthulhu Жыл бұрын
Awesome reaction as always! I'm glad you enjoyed this one. "Fun" is the perfect description for the entire franchise. Since you liked this one you're almost certainly going to love the rest of them. If you want to see actors actually walking on the top of a real train, check out some older films where stuntmen would do just that instead of everything being done on a sound stage. Granted, the train typically wasn't moving very fast but it was fast enough to be impressive. Westerns often did it and the 1976 film Silver Streak with Gene Wilder and Richard Pryor has at least one sequence on top of a real train that's in motion. I think I suggested it to you before, but you've got to see Collateral with Tom Cruise and Jamie Foxx. He was insufferable in Rain Man and charming in Mission: Impossible and you get a better idea of his ability as an actor in Collateral. You also have to see Top Gun and its sequel, of course!

Thanks! I'm 100% going to be watching this whole franchise and I want to see more Tom Cruise films too. It helps that he's shown that he's a good actor in the few movies that I've seen him in since he plays very different roles in them!
@Minion_of_Cthulhu Жыл бұрын
@@VerowakReacts Cruise actually is a very good actor. It's just that he tends to play the same type of character so it appears that he doesn't have much skill. For example, his characters in Top Gun, Days of Thunder, and Cocktail are all extremely similar to one another. Even the plots are quite similar, just swapping out different professions from one movie to the next. Cruise is much more skilled and versatile than he might initially appear. Another film you'll want to see him in is The Last Samurai, which I'm sure you've had recommended plenty of times. He also gives a hilarious performance in Tropic Thunder. He doesn't star in it, but he steals the entire movie with his scenes.
