If you are not terribly religious then I would recommend Dogma a movie from the The Viewaskew world of Kevin Smith. Actually I highly recommend any of Kevin's movies like Clerks, Mallrats or Chasing Amy. As for Kevin Costner you might want want to try A Field of Dreams, Dances with Wolves or my favorite The Untouchables

This movie was absolutely huge when it came out and the song that played during the credits (the Bryan Adams song “(Everything I Do) I Do It for You” which was also used as a theme in the score during the movie) was the number one song of the whole year (it spent 16 weeks uninterrupted at number one in the UK and to this day is the UK’s longest uninterrupted number one running song on the UK Singles Chart; globally, it’s one of the best-selling singles of all time) and they used clips of the movie in the music video, further advertising the movie. If not for Terminator 2 being one of the most anticipated, advertised/hyped, and, as it turns out, best sequels of all time, Robin Hood Prince of Thieves would’ve been the number one movie of the year easily. I understand how surprising that might seem for those who didn’t live through it, particularly sine T2 is discussed so much more all these decades later, but it was so big that it spawned a Mel Brooks parody film (Men In Tights), so it was indeed a big film.

Bit of Trivia for you: When they were pitching this film to Alan Rickman he had 1 condition. "He was allowed to play the Sheriff in the manner he wanted, all the time." He, a comedian and a playwright, re-wrote almost all of the Sheriff's lines. As a result this film is amazingly quotable.

"Dances With Wolves" is a masterpiece. That should be a must watch. Personally I recommend the extended cut if you do. There is some stunning extra scenes and some context that is brought back that was lost in the regular version. Edit: "Last of the Mohicans" is another must see masterpiece as well.

I agree both are great movies and I think you'd like them both. I have to give extra props for Field of Dreams. Before many people are like "eww it's a baseball movie? no thanks." to after "why did no one tell me this movie was so good!?!" If you want a Costner movie with the same level of seriousness as Robin Hood then you could react to Waterworld. Not a good movie by any measure (compared to the two mentioned here) but a fun watch and a guilty pleasure.

This must be an extended version I've never seen. I don't recognize a couple of those scenes, and I've seen this film several times.Didn't even know there was an extended version. Alan Rickman was a real treasure. You need to see him in a variety of roles. He's always great as a villain (which was how he was cast a lot in his early career). Die Hard & Robin Hood, of course, but also check out Quigley Down Under (1990). With the other two movies, it is his Baddie Trifecta. But also see him in pure comedies Galaxy Quest (one of the best), and Bottle Shock (one of my personal favorites). Also, check out Sense and Sensibility (1995), The Butler (2013-smaller role in that one but a great movie). Many people reccomend Love Actually, but I never considered it that good of a movie. He provided voice work for Tim Burton's Alice in Wonderland and 2005's Hichhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. He appeared in supporting roles in a number of good films (Perfume, Eye in the Sky, Sweeny Todd, and Dogma to name a few) and was a major actor in some lesser (or at least less well known) movies. Of course, he's also in the Harry Potter series. I'd definitely check out Quigley Down Under, Galaxy Quest, Bottle Shock, and Sense & Sensibility.

The “glumsy” fight scene in this movie is in stark contrast to the heavily choreographed version in The Adventures of Robin Hood (1938) where Robin’s opponent, Guy of Gisbourne, is played by Basil Rathbone - an actual fencing champion. Robin is also featured in Ivanhoe (1982) - a story that George R. R. Martin took plenty of inspiration from for the Great Tourney at Harrenhal part of ASOIAF - and a movie that I watch half-awake every January 1st.

I remember waiting for this movie three weeks after its release and watch it at the $1 theatre. It more entertaining than I expected. Kevin's attempt at an accent didn't last long. He is truly the John Wayne of my generation. He plays one character all the time. I mean, John Wayne played Genghis Khan and still sounded like John Wayne.

Rickman is great in this. My wife and I regularly reference "Something vexes thee?" and "I'll cut your heart out with a spoon!". Great, now you can watch the satire of this film Robin Hood: Men In Tights! I think you will appreciate a couple of specific jokes in it. Best to watch it while this film is fresh. Another HUGE vote for Galaxy Quest.. an excellent movie all round, one of my all time favorites. It is favored as not only one of the best Star Trek satire films, but often make the list of Best Star Trek Films. ST viewing is not required, just the knowledge that fandoms exist, there were off screen ego tensions. though I certainly wouldn't mind a few ST reactions (original movies first). BTW this film is worth re watching from a cinematography point of view. They had immense issues with lighting and weather... one of the most challenging shoots ever. If memory serves, the line about 'no sun in this country' was added with their frustration in mind. Remember, it was all shot on film, so the ability to fix poorly lit shots in post was fairly limited. The film they shoot with also has very little latitude for under/over exposure so they had to get it right. The era of cgi and digital unfortunately means older movies don't get the technical credit they deserve

Alan Rickman worked with Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio in The January Man (1989) Alan Rickman was also brilliant in Galaxy Quest, Quigley Down Under, and Potter series I recommend Errol Flynn as Robin Hood for a better portrayal to be followed up by Mel Brooks Robin Hood : Men in Tights Sean Connery portrayed an older Robin Hood before this was made called Robin and Marian

I absolutely love this movie. I grew up with it as a kid or was a kid when it came out and watched it way too many times. It's a classic 90's action/love type of movie as you mentioned in the summary at the end. Interesting you mentioned about Kevin Costner and his lack of accent, guess that was brought up by critics too considering the setting and well he goes in and out of having an English accent. I loved the reaction to it. I can easily see how someone can watch this and just enjoy it and laugh as there are a lot of comedic spots and Alan Rickman is just amazing as always. Great video

One of my other favorite films is "The Hunt for Red October". It's set near the end of the Cold War and the US is told one of the Soviet submarine commanders-who is in a new perfectly silent untrackable ballistic missile submarine-has suffered a mental breakdown and threatened to fire his missiles on the United States. The Soviet commander is Sean Connery... and he sounds Scottish the whole time. And you know what? You don't even care it's just such an intense, compelling film. I get lost in Prince of Thieves the same way. This epic, 80s style pulp historical fantasy that leans into the camp as much as the seriousness and somehow completely works. When you said, "I don't know if it's supposed to be comedy..." during the fight scene... yes. Exactly. It's funny, it's bloody, it's gritty, it's campy... hear me out.... it works because it feels "real". Real life is all these things. It isn't just one genre. Life is all genres. That's the magic. ♥

I really enjoy your reactions. A couple things I'd like to say/reiterate 1) IF you feel like checking out Alan Rickman as a GOOD character/person, My favorite Alan Rickman is Colonel Brandon in "Sense and Sensibility." (circa 1995). It necessitates watching his character carefully for subtle, nuanced things that show how humble/selfless he really is, but I love that movie and love him in it. (also his voice IS sex). It's actually my favorite Jane Austen adaptation, despite 1-2 characters being cast by actors that were too old (Emma Thompson was 36 playing 18-19), but did an amazing, Oscar-worth job so what can ya do?) It's a great movie no one has reacted to as far as I can tell. 2) Dances with Wolves is a must-see. it's a truly stunning, beautiful movie still relevant today. 3) IF you want another similar movie that's similarly campy, fun, doesn't-take itself-too-seriously. then look for the Three Musketeers with Kiefer Sutherland/Charlie sheen (1993 ish?) Very similar. They even had Brian Adams do a major song for it, just like he did with this movie (but had to have Sting and Rod Stewart to make a trio because... THREE Musketeers ya know?)

You're probably too young to know Tom Selleck. Oh, although people your age do know him from "Friends" as Monica's boyfriend Richard. He was huge in the 80s though. He was actually the original choice to play Indiana Jones before Harrison Ford, but he couldn't do it due to a contract he had with a TV show, but the show, "Magnum P.I.", ended up being a huge hit in the 80s, and made him super famous. In that era, he was the guy women were crazy about. Ends up, from what I've heard, also a really good guy in real life.

So, I obviously haven't seen the reaction yet, so I don't know what you do already know, or even if you really want to here any of this, but I've always had a weird attachment to the Robin Hood story. This is the one that was popular when I was younger, but I actually grew up on the old 60s Disney cartoon Robin Hood. (This is a whole other story, but there was a period in the 70s into probably the mid 80s after Walt Disney, and then later Roy Disney died, where the company was at a low point until Michael Eisner took over and rebuilt it into what it's now become. I once as a teenager read a Robin Hood book, but I was never sure if it was the Robin Hood book. I later learned there isn't exactly one. Robin Hood, is such an old story that had been originally passed down through generations told through oral story telling, and then later different written versions, eventually film and TV versions. The old Errol Flynn version is a classic. They actually shot that one close to where I'm from. It's a tiny little lake that's now a wealthy gated community called Lake Sherwood, because it was Sherwood Forrest when they shot the movie. Years ago, my brother was a security guard there. So you can imagine the cultural significance it must've had to society then, and probably still now, for it to have endured for so long. There's speculation about whether there ever really was a historical figure that might've been the real Robin Hood, or combination of different figures, but I don't think it's something we can ever really know for sure. Not too long ago, Ridley Scott did a Robin Hood that placed the story in a new historical context that may be more historically accurate. Who knows, but I really liked it. I was hoping that it would be the start of Ridley Scott maybe doing a new series of Robin Hood movies, but I don't think it was super successful, and unfortunately, I don't think that's going to be happening. Around the same time, there was also a new King Arthur movie done by Jerry Bruckheimer, that was more Jerry Bruckheimer than Ridley Scott, but there's also the same sort of speculation about whether King Arthur may have been based off of reality, and one that while a little more fantastical, was also placed in a new historical context that I thought was interesting compared to the traditional context.

This is one of my favorite movies it's just a fun watch. So you mentioned immediately Kevin Costner didn't have an English accent. Well, they tried. But after trying they realized that he sucked at it so they just said screw it we'll just do it without it. And it worked. In the end nobody really cared. So I don't you need to watch dances with wolves it is in my top five films of all time it's brilliant it's a masterpiece. As always you're awesome ❤️💚☘️🇺🇦

Kevin Costner tried doing a British accent' (whatever that is, we have dozens) but it was sooo bad they just went with his normal voice. Michael Kamen's score and Alan Rickman's performance (mentioned in the comments got to play how he wanted) absolutely made this film

Hi Verowak, I`m glad you enjoyed it, I agree Alan Rickman was the best part. IMO, the best film version of Robin`s story is (The Adventures of Robin Hood (1938)) in Technicolor. It Stars Errol Flynn & Olivia De Havilland as Robin & Marion. I would love to see you react to it at some point.

I'm obviously not a movie maker, but I don't understand the trivia that Costner didn't break character at the spoon improvisation. It really makes me wonder how much IMDB trivia is true. He's not in the shot. I don't even know if he'd be there for Rickman's coverage. Maybe he's off camera, but does it really matter if he breaks character off camera?

In truth, the English language was much different than it is today. Had everyone spoken in the actual dialect of the time, viewers would have had a difficult time just understanding the speech. And that would have positively taken away from enjoyment of the film.

Due to Costner‘s accent the movie was sometimes called „Dances with Bows“ and there is a joke about it in „Men in Tights“ as well. I really liked the movie back in the day, but the music is still great and has been used in a lot of trailers for other movies. I think Michael Kamen was at his best when he was working with limitations. In this case he was supposedly working off Medieval music pieces. Although I‘m not totally sure how they managed to get that, because there was no way to write down music that way. (Fun tangent: One of my friends once persuaded me to go to a seminar about Carmina Burana with him. I thought it would be mainly Middle High German, which I was familiar with. Turns out it was mostly Medieval Latin, which is a bit dissimilar from Classic Latin, which I wasn‘t very good at, and the Middle High German parts were only excerpts from folk songs that were probably well-known back then as a reference for the melody.) For a more traditional take, you should watch the 1938 The Adventures of Robin Hood with Errol Flynn and a bombastic score by Korngold. I have to admit that I have a soft spot for the 1952 The Story of Robin Hood and His Merrie Men. I believe it‘s the one that I saw first.

Field of Dreams (1989) and Dances with Wolves (1990) are probably the most recommended “must watch” Kevin Costner movies. But for a really early appearance of Kevin Costner, see the excellent Testament (1983). There’s also Silverado (1985), The Untouchables (1987), and No Way Out (1987) which puts Costner out there as a movie star. And though I think they unfairly get a bad rap, Waterword (1995) and The Postman (1997) are also worth watching. Alan Rickman is nothing but terrifying as the villain in the lesser known film, Closet Land (1991) with Madeleine Stowe. A definite watch.

I love Kevin Costner's films, they're under-appreciated in my opinion. I actually like Waterworld (1995), despite all the production issues and budget overages, but my favorite is The Postman (1997). I know you don't like spoilers so I won't even tell you the genre or make a comparison to other films / franchises. These were unique, one-off films that had their own world-building and narratives, plus they feature Kevin Costner as the lead.

Robin Hood is definately not an oscar worth blockbuster, but perfect for sunday afternoon movie time with the family and having a fun time enyjoing Alain Rickmans hilarious interpretation of the Sheriff. Furthermore, you mentioned you have both not seen Dances with Wolves and Terminator yet. Both are excellenct movies which I am looking forward watchin your reaction to it!

@@VerowakReacts I can't believe you've never seen Terminator! You have to fix that, quick, if only so that you can see Terminator 2. If you haven't seen Alien and Aliens, the same advice applies. Interestingly, Terminator 2 and Aliens are both considered two of the best sequels ever and they were both directed by James Cameron. Speaking of Cameron, if you haven't seen True Lies with Arnold Schwarzenegger you'll want to see that one too. It was also directed by James Cameron.

The legend of Robin Hood did not come from one specific person. People have different theories on who the actual person was, but none can be definitive. The inclusion of Maid Marion did not enter into Robin Hood lore until several centuries after his estimated existence. Certain parts of his story are common in all versions of the tale. On that comes to mind is the quarterstaff duel between Robin Hood and Little John. Most often the event takes place on some kind of bridge, I presume a narrow one.
