Okay, bear with me here: "If I were to start today (fully trained - if applicable), what concrete tasks would you give me?" I noticed SO OFTEN that how a job is described in writing and how the manager describes it can be SOOOO different, and it is SUCH an important thing! I didn't ask this in the past and I had a job that I only lasted 2 months in and cried the whole time because the description was so general, I didn't ask that question, and it turned out that what they wanted me to do was completely outside of my skills set, experience, and comfort zone. It's such a basic question, but I refuse to believe I'm the only one who started a job and was surprised to find out what it actually was.

You COULD ask them, but that's why a lot of companies put 'ad hoc duties as required'. So technically, literally anything outside of your job could be assigned to you and it'd still be part of the job...
@teomda2975
@teomda2975 9 ай бұрын
@@rexlongfellow Oh yes but I mean the main duties! For example, customer service is a pretty common job, yet in some companies the main task is taking phonecalls and answering questions, whereas in others it is mostly order management, or reporting. The description of the positions however doesn't always make that distinction, so I really think it's good to get some concrete examples from the manager of the position. I've been interviewing some more since my original comment and every time I asked this question, and every time I got an answer that was different from the idea I had gotten about the position from the add alone.

At big employers, I like to ask inside baseball questions about the interview process. Since the interview is already done, they're more willing to reveal things like how the answers are evaluated, or which questions were unscored. This is extremely useful information if you ever have an interview for a different position at the same organization.

@lunar_skies9867 "Now that the interview is done, am I allowed to ask how my responses will be evaluated? For example, were the questions equally weighted?" If they're willing to talk about that at all, then you can ask a follow-up about the first question and whether it was scored. Unscored questions are sometimes known as ice-breakers. They tend to be really open-ended, non-specific questions like, "Why do you want to work here?" Something designed to get you to talk, but not about anything in particular, so tue interviewers can understand better how you present information to help them evaluate the real questions that come later.

I like to ask "what does your perfect candidate look like/think of someone who filled this role perfectly. what did they do that impressed you?" this gives you an opportunity to make you look good, because you can provide examples of your own talent to match their idea. another is "do you have any reservations about hiring me?" which can give you a chance to assuage any doubts they could have about you.

"what do your best employees in this position do?" -then elaborate about how you feel you compare to those qualities "how about your worst employees?" -again, elaborate. Try to put yourself in a positive light, but it's also good too be self aware on a couple items you aren't perfect at, as well as sharing how you will counteract that negative. This will help them imagine you succeeding in the position and show that you are willing to own up to and correct your flaws. These two questions got me a job once, because I showed that I cared about doubt well at the position. I also like asking "what feedback will I get? How will I know whether I'm succeeding in this position." Because then I won't be as anxious once I get the job.

Great video! I love❤ your advice and plan to add it to my 'career arsenal'. I've found the following four questions have worked well for me over the years: 1. What are some things I can do to be successful in this position? 2. How is my performance evaluated? 3. How are mistakes treated? 4. Based on our conversation, do you feel I would be a fit for your position? #4 is my favorite, because no matter how they answer it let's me know where I stand with them-if they like you they have no problem answering in the affirmative (i.e "Yes, we think you might be a good fit") Even if they do end up not choosing you, you at least know you did well. If they don't like you, their answer will be non-committal (i.e. "We have others to interview", "It's not up to me", "We'll get back to you", etc). This at least let you know they weren't sold on you.

My favorite question to ask is "What made you, my interviewer, choose this company? What keeps you here?" this is a great way to get a personalized insight into the company from a more objective viewpoint. Also "What's your favorite project you've worked on while here? Can you tell me a bit about what made it special to you?" this again helps the interviewer give you a peek behind the curtain into what might make the company tick a bit and what sort of projects to look forward to.

People love talking about themselves, you seem interested in the company culture and learn more about the culture, day-to-day or any cool initiatives the company has. Another one is "What is the biggest challenge of this role?" Shows that you are thinking ahead and serious about the role and gives you an opportunity to reiterate how you can use your skills to overcome those challenges

I took a job finding class a lot of years ago and one of the tricks they taught us was, if the person doing the interview is the person making the hiring decision, ask to have a tour of where you'll be working(like at the end of the interview as in this video) and this will get the person to visualize you in that environment and influence them in your favor when the decision is to be made.
@xcristinat
@xcristinat Жыл бұрын
I always ask if a tour is possible! It's really for myself mainly, to see what the workplace is like and if it's a place where I'd like to work. Plus you can pick up so much "silent" information. Do the current employees look like they'd rather be anywhere else? Do they smile at you or look at you like you're an alien? Even something as simple as whether the office space is clean/organized tells me a LOT about how the company treats their employees. If there's crap all over the floor, papers everywhere, no organization, elevator's broken, etc. then that company does *NOT* value its employees, I guarantee you that. Is there a breakroom? If it's a mess, that's likely a sign of messy and disrespectful coworkers that you want to avoid.

The sustainability question seems off as the interviewer not know much besides office environment like "we stopped using plastic cups" and the more important stuff you can read online. Asking if they have new secret projects to match the competition doesn't seem like something they'd wanna talk about

I think asking questions is more geared towards figuring out if a company will be a good fit for YOU. It's your chance to see if that potential offer might be worth it beyond the $. Obviously not foolhardy like any interview but can give you a sneak peak if there's particular red flags. It does usually look better to have questions prepared but it's also your opportunity to interview the interviewer for a bit.

If the interviewer left you only 5 minutes for your questions at the end of the interview, I'd consider this a poor interview practice. Better interviews either start with the candidate's questions, or they're mixed in throughout the interview (more like a conversation format than an interview).

Wasn't this all discussed during the interview already?

Remember that you are also interviewing the company to see if they are a fit. You can ask how your professional success will be measured. What is the professional culture like. What can you expect in terms of training or career advancement. Also prepare your questions based on who is interviewing you as each will be able to answer different types of questions: HR, hiring manager, etc.

Ask what are their big challenges. You are being hired to solve a problem. If they disclose that you can talk about how you have solve that problem before and possible solutions

The value thing is WILD. In the best way. Like.. companies ALWAYS gloat about blah blah blah ( sell the crap out of it) and it’s so pathetic for the amount of work you put it
