_______________ Impress Your Friends With Implied Metric Modulation | DRUM LESSON -- Get the sheet music here: stephensdrumshed.ac-page.com/...
Ok, come on, the title to this drum lesson is a complete joke. We've got to have fun with this drumming thing...and the fact is, we as humans want to impress others. But that's not what music is about. It makes me laugh every time I think about this title. But, learning time on a deeper level is something that I think all drummers should do. But not only dissecting time...understanding how we can use what we're learning in a MUSICAL way.
So here's a lesson that talks about implied metric modulation...something that you've probably heard your favorite players do. It gives the feeling that the music is either slowing down, speeding up, or moving to a different time signature.
Leave a comment below and let me know your favorite songs that use this technique!

Funny thing is when I read the title, the first thing that popped into my mind was "Or, How to fulfill every bass player's worst nightmare in one easy lesson." I was glad to hear you address that sentiment too. I always assumed drummers were unaware of how we felt.

Oh that's what it called! I didn't even realize there was an actual name for this. I always just kind of expressed it as " you know, like in songs where the drummer plays these cool off time, spastic mini solos and then the whole band comes in on the 1 for a stab or cool little riff and you do this a bunch of times blah blah blah.....". Implied Metric Modulation is much easier to say. Although, I'll probably still have to use my original oration to explain what Implied Metric Modulation is cause I know non of the nitwits I play with have heard that term either!😂😂😂 And as a bonus, for a minute or two, i'll be the smartest guy in the room!😂😂😂 They'll be putting the "R" back in "DUMMER"!😲😉 Peace.

I'm a beginner so forgive me for what may be a stupid question. But what is the difference between this and just going to a half time beat? That makes it seem like the tempo slows down? Couldnt you do that instead? Or is this a way to slow down tempo without going to half the tempo??

What's beat flipping? Quarter note displacement of the whole beat and coming back in on the one or something?
@manifestgtr
@manifestgtr 10 ай бұрын
@@cookedrums1044 It’s taking the backbeat and displacing it by an 8th note or so…onto the “and of 3”, “and of 1”, etc. A really good example is the instrumental section of Seventeen by Winger. Toward the end of that break, Rod flips the beat in this way that almost completely obscures the pulse, made “worse” by the fact that they anticipate the downbeat when they come back into the verse.
@cookedrums1044
@cookedrums1044 10 ай бұрын
@@manifestgtr Ah cool, I just call it displacement lol but ig that doesn't clarify if its the "back beat" or just a crash or the hi hats etc. Gartsk'a clinic on displacement is nuts, he "beat flips" a metrically modulated beat if you haven't already seen it

I always struggled - and will continue to struggle - with the term "Implied" (or "illusion"). Yes, relative to the base speed you DO play faster or slower, by a distinct fraction of the base speed. You actually do, you don't pretend or wrongly make someone believe you do. That is not an acoustic hallucination. To me 'implied' is just a terribly misleading term.
@StephenTaylorDrums
@StephenTaylorDrums 5 жыл бұрын
Implied has to do with the theory...as long as you're using subdivisions common to that time signature and there is no notated shift to a new tempo/time signature, you're simply implying that it happened. Because many times you play that against the other things that are happening. So you may be the only one that sounds in a new tempo. We just can't call it official metric modulation if we're not actually modulating as a group to a new noted tempo within the piece. All of these theoretical terms are simply a way to explain what is happening in the music though. We're just getting super nerdy here lol...
@ralphgehteha9924
@ralphgehteha9924 5 жыл бұрын
Well, those terms actually made me feel like an idiot for a long time (not the only thing, though :D). I had already grasped the concept, but then I stumbled over these terms and people saying "No, you are actually only implying a different speed". Then I read and read and watched video after video in which people (including Gavin Harrison) appearently were trying to tell me I was not *actually* playing faster or slower - when I definitely did. Theoretic terms sometimes are an obstruction or even a setback.
