A new impressionistic painting demosntration! This time a quaint English dockside scene. In this tutorial you will learn the art of capturing the essence of a harbor through loose brushwork, vibrant colors, and simplified shapes. Learn how to draw inspiration from a reference photo with subtle color alterations, using them as a springboard to create a harmonious palette that gives life to your painting. I am using techniques for simplifying complex scenes into dynamic arrangements of shapes, allowing you to convey the charm and character of the harbor with expressive flair.

Very nice painting and wonderful demonstration of this scene, Malcolm. You really have a talent for simplification which is something I really struggle with. After having worked with you for quite a while now, I think I am at last getting there! Thank you. You are an excellent teacher!

Wow your colours are beautiful Malcolm, you make it look so easy, but it does take practice and more practice and I guess as artists we have the joy of always learning something new. It’s rather exciting 😀 thank you for another great demo, can’t wait to give it a go!

Thank you. Its very abstract in some ways - letting shapes suggest details. Nice when it works.

A lovely lively painting. Can you give more information about the paper you use. Did you apply gesso?
@MalcolmDewey
@MalcolmDewey 7 ай бұрын
It is paper for oils, called Tela, made by Fabriano. No gesso required. Handy for quick studies like this.

Do you suggest putting a varnish on oil paintings once dry?
@MalcolmDewey
@MalcolmDewey 7 ай бұрын
Absolutely. At least a layer of retouch varnish which still lets the paint breathe and dry fully to the lower layers.
