One thing not talked enough about in Wes’ playing is his incredible time. Everything he plays is right in the pocket, even when he’s playing fast tempos. Listening to it slowed down, you can still hear even subdivisions all through his playing. He doesn’t really even straighten out the eighth notes, they are still swinging. Everything has a sense of rhythmic power and definition. All of the best players had this. Coltrane. Brecker. Metheny. Just fantastic.

It’s the result of internalizing time. This comes with practice.

Great transcription. I so wish you would transcribe that same tune, but from the live version with the Winton Kelly Trio (Smokin' at the Halfnote). Please and thank you.

Yeah the one that was re-issued on “The Verve Jazz Sides” which is like 5:03 or 5:06 long right? I know you have to mean that one, it’s on another level. The other versions, as good as they are, are like rough drafts and rehearsals leading up to that one. Fully unbelievable.

This wonderfully reveals his God like playing. My jaw is on the floor. Wes' harmonic language is just wooooooooow. I've run out of words. He says it better.

In measure 96 is written: "add octave below" - notating all the octaves makes sight-reading more difficult. Just play the upper notes with your 4th or 3rd finger and add the octave with your 1st finger one octave lower...

Damn...can you be at least grateful he did all that work...You can just add the octave on your own. Great explanation from jamessir100.

While this modal tune is a Coltrane tune, Wes made it all his own.
