Wow , your video is exactly what I have been struggling with. I’m 63 and definitely was an old school type stand up goalie. I play old timers , and I have since been learning and doing more butterfly saves. Thanks for addressing the main issues, I will certainly be applying what I’ve learned from you . Thank you, and I also subscribed…

Awesome! Hope some of those tips helped. Looks like Maria mountain just did a video on pushes too but more focused on the excercise portion of it. Check that out also

I appreciate the ‘beer league’ beginner lesson. All the videos out there are for pro or high level hockey. I’m 43 and just trying to enjoy the game a get a few saves. Thx for the tips.

I'm (41) just getting back into hockey after 15 years away and I'm trying to catch up with modern techniques. I tried your tips tonight in my beer league game and saw a noticeable improvement in my ability to push. Thanks so much for this, I've subscribed and will definitely be watching more of your videos!

this is me at 46, just started goal 3 weeks ago, new found respect for goalies, the tip about the hips up and not sagging, this might just be my problem, I'm back on the ice monday, i will practice this along with the rotation, thanks again, keep posting

I'm in the same boat... my daughter (11) playing inspired me to jump in goal after a 30+ year hiatus of playing ice hockey in general. It's a tough one, and similarly - I like to try and save 5-10 minutes to try and work on this pre-skate/session

These are great tips & observations, thanks! I've just started trying to learn this technique. I've been burned by goals that a push may have prevented. I'm 50 so I'm no longer at my most flexible, so these tips are helpful. I try not to drop unless I have to (doesn't always work), as I'm more mobile on my skates. But if I'm down & there's a shot threat and there's not time to get back up, this is a technique I want in the toolbox.

Have you considered getting a double break pad and an extra inch or two on the thigh rise? The extra flex and the extra in or two would help close up that five hole a little more. Also the leg that you push with, get it back down to the ice as fast as you can you'll slide faster and with more ease. The longer it stays up and drags the more work and effort it takes i feel like.

You read my mind. I think my next set will be double break since I have such a narrow flare. Another excuse to buy another set! :)

This is a great video for learning the mechanics of sliding, and I appreciate your time and effort making it! As a 90s stand up goalie who was off the ice for almost 20yrs and just got back to regular play last year (in my mid-40s with lower back and hip issues), I'm able to execute the movements - I do them in warm-ups every game and sometimes work from my knees for awhile at stick & puck - but I struggle with my brain not suggesting the push/slide as an option in the heat of the game. Any suggestions for an old dog learning a new trick?

I had the exact same problem when I started doing these. Your natural reaction is probably to lunge at the puck but you need to train your brain to use your push while down. You need to instinctively “trust” your skating ability for it to become automatic. One way I got used to doing them was in a very casual drop in I would make a save and stay down and just bfly push to follow the puck around after. It didn’t make for great saves but it just got my brain thinking “hey you can move while you’re down.” You can even just follow the play in your bfly push when it’s not in a high danger zone. Don’t recommend doing this during a league game though lol

My feet do the same but it’s my right that naturally points outward. I used to have more flexibility. Really want to get it back and these may help me get my pushes back.

For the longest time I thought it was my leg that was pointing outwards but after seeing a physiotherapist it’s actually my shin bone that is rotated outwards. Unfortunately there is nothing I can do about it outside of surgery most likely. I wonder if you’re able to correct yours with some therapy.

Amazing video. I am 40 years old and I am able to push no problem with my left leg going to the right, but I cannot for the life of me do it on the right leg going left. Any tips for that? You gave me a lot of good ideas!
@ovr40goalie

Since it was easy for me going from right to left, I literally just spent half hour breaking down the good side and trying to replicate it on my weak side. Which is how I came to all those small cues in the video. Basically do one on your good side then try on your weak side, really feel why it’s different then repeat and try to replicate it on the weaker leg. For me I had to keep my hips up and engage my core for my weak leg to push. Hope that helps!

Get your skates extra sharp something like 100-1 fbv and good sliding pads did the trick for me. You get used to those sharp skates in no time and butterfly pushes are so easy.
