Excellent! You picked up on it pretty quick. As a hockey player, I’d say it’s important to learn to stop on both sides. This really applies to anything related to skating. Once you get one side down make a point to practice the other side before moving on to anything
@speterm_0042 жыл бұрын
Well I have this problem. I have learned the stop turning to the left, but I can't do it while turning to the right. But I also started to learn that thing when I place my skates in front of one another while turning, which I also only learnt to turn left. In fact simply turning to the right is also a bit of a problem for me. Can you suggest anything? Will this be a problem that I learnt something new while I couldn't do the hockey stop to the other side? Btw I don't want ot be a professional skater I just want to learn these skills so that I could do them anytime, but that I can only do these to one side bothers me a bit.

I think people neglect that he's forced to film himself (for KZbin). Most people learning won't film themselves, so they won't have the luxury of reliving their mistakes. as someone who's played hockey since I was 3 years old, and having the majority of my friends ask me to help them learn to skate, seeing how relatively quickly he picked up skating was pretty cool. You can really tell he had zero clue how to skate at first seeing as he tried to take footsteps instead of strides at first, and by the end he looked a lot more comfortable using his edges, good on ya man!

The biggest thing that I learned which made me go from falling-every-few-meters to being able to do a few laps in a row was simply forcing myself to stop looking at my feet and looking where I want to go instead

My advice on how to ice skate. The problem for begginers is that your scared of falling, but if you learn how to fall without hurting yourself and how to get up you have no problem, also everyone falls its no big deal. Next, a lot of people walk on the ice or take steps, now your probably going to fall since the front of many iceskates has a jagged stop, you want to glide on the ice as if your sliding. Lastly, dont ever be to full of yourself and always hold your arms out. Bonus; when you fall dont hold your hand out with your flat palm on the floor someone might run your hand over, put your in a fist position. Have a good day!!

Trying to learn this myself, I'm 'OK' at skating forwards and have been a few times now after taking the kids to hockey lessons. I decided to try to teach myself to stop like the kids, I was getting there, then had a nasty tumble and nearly knocked myself out on the ice after landing flat on my back. Next week we go back and we get better...... In my defence I am the wrong side of 50 and not skated since I was in my teens.

It's only a bad way to learn for kids, they become dependent on it and can't do without it.
@Sarge925 жыл бұрын
@@chrisj403 not neccesarily its a training aid its meant to take away variables to allow you to work on each part before you bring them all together just look at swimming you start by holding onto the side and practicing kicking and keeping yourself up then you get that foam board thing and practice moving around the pool with just kicking then comes the floatie belt and you work on your arm and leg movements getting them right then the belt goes away and you try to do everything together and stay afloat as long as your not being allowed to use it constantly and never being pushed to try a little harder its fine people learn things all the time with the help of training aids if what you said was true most kids and adults would still have stabilizers on there bikes
@chrisj4035 жыл бұрын
@@Sarge92 That's a fair point, but it's different for skating. To go fast, to turn, to stop, you need to shift your centre of mass. It's all about balance, and practice. But using a stability doesn't get you any practice with the core of skating. But it's fair to say that they can just use it until they're used to the basics.

This is easy for me as I am a goalie also former player and this may not be the biggest carryover between the position but edge work as a goalie is the main focus and I am FAR from perfect but living in Canada I have a lot of opportunity’s to skate and practice. One thing I will say is that your skates are WAY to loose I notice when I am playing that having tighter laces can help but not to tight or it can be too uncomfortable. One of the hardest parts of skating is breaking in the skate I am on the ice atleast 5 times a week sometimes twice in the same day but in that time it take me usually 3 months of all that skating to break my goalie skates in to were my movements are all around good. Best of luck with the skating and keep at it repetition is key.

I've been struggling to learn this on ice skates for a while. Not because I don't know how to skate, it's actually the opposite problem; I do plenty of inline skating, and the technique for doing a hockey stock on inline skates is different to ice skates. The common misconception is that ice skating and inline skating are the same, and 90% of the time they are, but when it comes to leans, turns and change of direction, there's a major difference. Generally, the more you lean on ice skates the more grip you have, on inline skates the more you lean the less grip you have. This becomes a challenge when you perform a manoeuvre and you get a different response to what your brain has learned to expect. With the hockey stop, I need to lean my inline skates very aggressively to cause them to lose their grip and slide, if I was to do that on ice my skates would instead dig in (when I expect them to slide) and I'd be thrown into the ground. So learning from scratch is a lot easier than breaking habit and expectations. Nevertheless, well done Mike for learning this awesome and useful skill.
