In this video I talk about how I push my body into being able to play in a lower stance. I have always had a stance that's been too high and rigid so I finally took the time to get my body accustomed to playing deeper.
Hold the deep stance for 10-20 sec for sets up to 20-30 minutes with as much rest as you need in between. It won't be comfortable at first but will improve over time.

I think the most important part here is one so overlooked, leg training. I train my legs twice a week, leg press, squats, deadlifts - you name it. If your legs are burring, then you simply need to strengthen them. I'm 48 and my legs NEVER hurt at any point. The other thing it that hard leg work in the gym also greatly strengthens all the ligaments and tendons around your knees and hips, keeping them healthy for much longer. Beat your legs up at the gym, not on the ice. For a goalie leg training in the gym should be equally as important as every other aspect of your game on the ice.

Good call! I was doing barbell training last season and felt way more stable on the ice. This season not so much since I’m on the ice often that I wanna keep my legs fresh. But you’re right in the offseason I’ll start beefing up the legs.

As a former goalie in my younger years, and whom is now 40, the new gear, the new tactics... its a new game. I wish I had it all as a kid because I had a naturally super low (think Potvin) stance. The new skates and pads would have made that better. I doubt I can even do that for 5 minutes now!

It’s amazing how the old school goalies did it with the gear how it was back then. I’m sure still got it! It’s like riding a bike ..

@@ovr40goalie Thanks man. Yeah my gear is heavy as all hell compared to the new stuff. I'll have to very slowly acquire some new gear. Helmet is first as my old one is finally caput.

I'm in the exact same boat. I'm 46 and just got back into playing 2 years ago. We weren't doing the butterfly when I played as a kid. When you went down, most times it was on the flat face of your pads. Just figuring out how to drop into a butterfly and getting my pads to rotate took a while. Luckily I'm still in really good shape so that's not an issue but the next hurdle for me is to get a lower stance because I have been prone to 5 hole goals. After seeing a video of me playing I realized I was too high. I don't hop when I drop but i have too much distance to cover which is why I get beat 5 hole. I actually just got a cheap small ball pitching machine off of Amazon and I'm going to set it up to shoot along the ground, five hole, and just practice a lower stance and driving my knees down to shut the door. Cool thing too is the pitching machine can also be used on glove and blocker sides too....... That's one thing that's always rough about being a goalie. Regular players can practice stick handling and shooting like anywhere by themselves. It's literally impossible for a goalie alone to practice making saves.

@@miekkenrI just started playing again at 44. Check out Sideline swap. I got 3/4 of my gear on there. And DEFINITELY get a new mask. I would never trust a cheap or old mask to protect my head. Even some beer league guys have bombs. My head is worth a few hundred dollars for a quality mask.

Thanks! I tried this last night and had a phenomenal game! I think it might have affected the speed of my side shuffles though. I will have to check that next time I’m on the ice.
@ovr40goalie
@ovr40goalie 4 ай бұрын
Don’t forget that if you play low and wide your shuffles are going to be harder to do. You can try practicing transitioning from a relaxed/shot stance (easy to shuffle) to your aggressive stance. Once you get good at that transition between the two depending on the play and you’ll also conserve tons of energy! Good luck !

Great video! I actually started doing this organically and have been making a conscious effort to sit in a lower butterfly stance. FWIW, I haven’t played in a full mens game yet. I’m fortunate to get lots of ice time with my sons u13 team. Coach asked me to suit up at every practice so he can run more drills using myself and the regular goalie. Sitting lower like this I found had allowed my to drop down faster closing up the 5 hole. Now I need to really work on the butterfly pushes. Right leg works good for pushing but left leg? It’s like there’s a disconnect between it and my brain. 😂 ***edit to add*** I’m 44 and have never played ice hockey, especially as a goalie. So I’m like new new. Lol

Thats awesome you get to practice with your sons team, I bet your getting more practice than most of us are. And when you do step on the ice for a league game you'll be extra prepared! Teaching the non-dominant leg to cooperate is a chore on its own... I tend to learn everything on my right leg then transfer the knowledge over to the left, but it takes twice as long for sure. Welcome to the world of goaltending! Never too late to start!

Pretty much my whole life if you include street hockey! A majority of my 20s I was playing inline hockey, ice in my 30s casually on and off. Unfortunately the ice game has never really clicked for me which is why I am finally taking some time to learn the position properly. Its a struggle but trying to get better every day!
