same. what worked for me is planning an aesthetically pleasing map, THEN I worked out where to put buildings and with them the furniture and decorations I want to have near them. It's not the best flow, but I start editing form there the places that become bothersome to the game or to the eye. I actually wanted to draw something with the map, so that's why I cared more about the map than the flow of the island. But it is working nicely so far. what makes or breaks the flow for me is actually the position of inclines and bridges. since you gotta think about where you need them to access places, but also about where they are gonna look natural and not so obvious

In retrospective, I got very lucky with the island I chose first because my Town Hall was a bit far from the airport. I didn't know back then, but I've been to many many islands where the Town Hall is right in front of the airport, and most of the times not even lined up properly! 😮 In the long run, I wouldn't have been able to live with something like that, lol. I dont like getting lost on islands and I make sure to kind of have that circle so nobody has to backtrack. I should add that I stay away from long paths because I dont like my island feeling repetitive. So I add turns and curves to keep the pathing interesting. Too straight and long and it will feel too structured.
