I am not a cellist. But as a composer, I can tell you that your videos are fabulous! Nothing is better for getting a true gestalt for what cello players go through! Thank you!!

My God! Back in my days you had to pay like 40 euros per hour in order to (luckily) come across this kind of excellent advice in a private lesson. These are magnificent tips, to the point and very well demonstrated. They would have spared me countless hours of frustration when I first started practicing octaves. People learning the cello are so fortunate now. It's no wonder the level of playing has gone up in recent years!!!

It’s amazing, no? Surprising how few views videos like this seem to get.

Outstanding lesson on octaves! You are very much "correct" about bowing with more weight on the lower string, thus emphasizing the basis of the octave - the thumb. In this way if we can become highly consistent in the placement of the thumb notes we only have to adjust the upper note to stay in tune. One other tip I give students is to place their 2nd finger behind the 3rd to create a steady left hand. The 2nd finger helps create a balanced, steady arch in the left hand that is beneficial when playing octaves. Placing the 2nd finger can also help discourage cellists from tilting their hand position since the 3rd finger is a weaker finger. Students might be tempted to tilt towards the 3rd finger to give it more strength when it feels weak. The 2nd finger can help alleviate this issue.

Great tips!! Even when you try to play “poorly” you still play fairly well. 🤣🤣🤣 I forgot where I saw it but I saw someone doing a big gliss octave and that was so impressive how he stayed in tune.

Dear Mark, thank you so much! Sposiba bolshoj! There are so many etudes for 8s, but if you are up for a challenge, Popper Etude No. 13 and No. 20 are good ones! Grutzmacher also is great. There is also a solo piece by Kodaly, can’t remember the name, but it’s full of 8s.
