Thank you so much, Liz! Every videos are very clear. So, I could completely understand the whole English-RP sounds of vowels, diphthongs, and triphthongs. In my country, “how to pronounce English sounds” is not systematically taught. And to make matters worse, both American and British accent are mixed. Some teacher speak in American (but they don’t understand General American Accent), others speak in British. My first teacher spoke in British, and the second teacher spoke in American. Both English were without the correct syllables. I can understand another European languages. I wanted to improve my English pronunciation in British (RP) more clearly. Watching your video, I made the vowels’ diagrams based used on IPA for my understanding. Your videos has been changing my English world!. Well, English has semi-vowels /j/, /w/ and /r/. Have you ever uploaded video on the semi-vowels?
@EnglishwithLiz2 жыл бұрын
I am so glad I am helping to change your 'English World' 😀 . Whilst I have lessons on all the semi-vowel sounds, I think a separate video on them would be a good idea. So watch this space! ❤️ &🕊

@@EnglishwithLiz I watched the videos related to the linking sounds /j/, /w/ and /r/ today. Do you use the term “linking word” as “semi-vowel”? If so, I could understand them. Thank you so much!

Hi Hiroko /j/, /w/ and /r/ are sounds that link words together. I will post videos on semi-vowels very soon that will hopefully make it clear how semi-vowels are used in words. ❤️ &🕊

When you shorten the vowels as you did at 6:23 and incorporate them into those sentences, it aligns more with Conservative RP, which is associated with old-fashioned speech, particularly used by aristocrats. It's worth noting that within Received Pronunciation, there are two main variants: Conservative RP and Modern RP. In Modern RP, vowel sounds are generally not as shortened to one syllable. Even newsreaders on the BBC tend to adhere to Modern RP rather than the more antiquated style of Conservative RP. Individuals like Prince Charles often speak with a Conservative RP accent, whereas many younger royals Prince Harry, William, etc and others speak with a more Modern RP. To be honest with you when you shorten it like that it sounds so old fashioned and the queen god rest her soul usually would shorten diphthongs and triphones to one syllable resulting in the way you said fire, buyer etc.

In modern RP extreme smoothing is not used. it sounds quite posh. what do you think Liz, Do people in England still use it?
@EnglishwithLiz3 жыл бұрын
Sorry for delay in replying, Sam. You are quite right that in modern RP extreme smoothing is not often used. However, the word 'are' is very often smoothed to ɑː and you hear it a lot in current modern RP. When I played back my recording of 'smoothed' words I did sound a bit too posh 😀

Can I ask ? If the Firework ,cowboy, playground and Boil is considered as a triphthong?
@EnglishwithLiz8 ай бұрын
Great question. 'Fire' on its own has a triphthong and in 'Firework' it remains a triphthong, but it's much smoother because of the following consonant 'w'. Cowboy & playground don't have a triphthong, but boil in Modern RP does, because the dark l produces the əl sound, so you will hear /bɔɪəl/. . Hope that makes sense. Love ❤️ & 🕊️Peace. Liz
