So, I'm a relatively new hobby photographer, and seriously Nigel, your videos have been such an inspiration, I can really see the difference between the pictures I'm making now vs. a year ago, much of it down to your wise words. Scale is not something I realised made quite such a gigantic difference before watching this, but seeing the shots that work and don't really hammers it home. Another piece of valuable knowledge in the arsenal from you! The slope image actually took my breath away and the house dwarfed by the mountain... incredible. Keep it up, I always love seeing a Nigel video on the feed! Cheers

Thank you for this eye-opening video! With your simple, super practical tips, photos can definitely look better. The other day I was taking a walk along some trails in a national park in my country and I found a great location with big trees that form a kind of tent at the top. Sun rays went through the leaves in the canopy creating a fantastic atmosphere, but it was not until I included a little cabin in the photo that the splendor of the trees could actually be pondered. Thanks again, I love your work because it's super clear and practical. By the way, the pyramidal shape of the mountains in the background at 4:20 are awesome!!

Hi Tim. Great advise. In addition to what you recommend I may go out in the field nearby and take some photos. There should be no body around and it gives me a break from being home. Happy shooting and be sure and wash your hands. ;-)

Excellent video. So many people fall back on the technique of taking a wide angle shot with a "foreground interest". Many of these photos accentuate a foreground that isn't all that interesting at the expense of diminishing the drama of the background. The images in this video accentuate the drama of the background with the foreground used to illustrate scale. Well done!

Wow that was so great. It moved at a great pace. It was obvious that you had done lots of preparation: relevant B-roll, great setting and lighting on you, multiple camera angles, love the use of the iPad to add something different, and a worthwhile topic. Someone I watch mentioned that your channel has grown. No wonder. Killer quality.

its kind of funny, but I used to get frustrated when someone would walk into my landscape shot, but I am beginning to understand how having a person in it really helps add to the drama. Of course, it helps to know that person and ask them to stand where you'd like them to stand, and please be wearing a nice bright color.... : ) Thanks Nigel!

Perhaps the largest frustration I have had getting back into photography is handling vistas. As you know, in the western US vistas are almost constant. In person they can be breathtaking, from the camera less-so. Thanks for covering this subject. Gives me a reason to go back and try again.

Interesting. You have said, on occasion, how I visualize a photo may be entirely different than how you do and that is absolutely okay. I see the same for the comments about Angel's Landing as I did not view it as particularly scary. All in the eyes of the beholder! Love the videos.

Illuminating, as usual. Alas, my shadow will likely not be gracing the trail to Angels Landing. I've seen enough spine tingling videos to discourage that endeavor. Of course, some of those other locations are a bit sketchy as well. Book ordered. Rock on!

I really liked the more homely approach to this episode, that was a nice touch. I was 1 click away from ordering a signature edition but the shipping just edged it out of a price I could personally justify as I recalled ordering Annie Leibovitz's 2005-2016 portraits book for less than £70, which is a substantially larger with a comparable, high-quality print and protective sleeve, albeit not a limited or signed print.

Very beautiful images! About the use of a wide focal length, does it is render the scale or does it exaggerate it? Because often we say that the focal length which correspond (perspective wise) to the human vision is about 50mm.....anyway I like the its effect....

I agree that scale can be an important element of an image, however, the inclusion of that element needs to complement the image. I had a shot of old water tracks in Deadvlei, looks like fingers. Someone commented, quite rightly, that there was no idea of scale, they were huge. I felt however that the inclusion of a person would distract from the image. The ones you have shown certainly complement the composition. I guess it comes down to the feeling that your image is trying to convey.
@klausschleicher5234 жыл бұрын
Hi Nigel, I think bringing scale by coincidence (building, people running through the frame, animals a.s.o.) to an image can make it really good. But these forced adding of scale is only ugly. Sorry to say it, but the first image from the Färöer you showed: In my humble opinion the person there is ruining it. For me a perfect case for the Photoshop "content-aware fill" ;-) I know, this is my personal taste and maybe I have seen too many "hero" shots. The opposite case is the image where more people hiking on the ridge line. This image looks good. Sorry, I don't want to be too destructive. The book is welcomed idea and already preordered. I'm curios how much VAT I will have to pay ;-)
@wallystellmacher67944 жыл бұрын
It‘s the hardest challenge to bring the real scale of the landscape into your photos that you experienced at that moment. The only thing I see is to create a significant depth in the photo by using a powerful fore- and background.

I couldn't disagree more. Ambiguities of scale add mystery and evocation to photography. Just add David Ward, Joe Cornish, Guy Tal or any fine art landscape photographer. We do not need to show and explain everything. Adding human interest - particularly when this is something so blatantly staged as a figure just gawping at the view - simply turns a landscape photograph into an advertorial for Trail magazine. Every one of these images would be immeasurably improved by removing the human element.
