This is a much needed tutorial! I have a question. Where do you prefer to sit your melody instruments/synths in a mix, when you're planning to add vocals? I think that would be a dope video as well.

I sit them wherever they fit. It’s not a difficult answer because I honestly don’t think that deep about it. I just make sure I’m utilizing width and panning as much as possible. Sometimes I cut at 3k to make room for future vocals.

Quick question for you, how do you get the labels at the top of all your songs. Where it says, Intro, Hook, Verse etc. Can't seem to figure this out.

This was a super cool tutorial. Thank you Jelie. :) Quick question/clarification. I noticed the faders were ALL at Unity, so you weren't really "mixing" via the faders. Once you get your levels set via the method you showed in your video, do you still balance via the faders? The Selig Gain trick was really awesome! I love that RE and this was another reason it is so useful.

Sometimes I do balance with the faders for speed. It’s all preference based. No good reason for why I don’t use the faders. Thank you for watching.

FYI: For me it'd have been beneficial for you to hit tab on the Selig so I can see how it's routed. I want to use a free gain plugin instead of the selig that cost money and the master outs of the master section go INTO the hardware interface and doesn't allow me to expand the hw interface to see how it's routed. I've tried inserting my gain (blue lab Gain-12) of choice without hitting shift to take away the auto routing, and it doesn't route properly.

Great vid, though I had been led to believe that altering the volume on the instrument isn't the same as setting the gain? In any event, Kilohertz have a free channel gain RE which makes gainstaging so much easier than using the desk in Reason - the gain knob might as well be on the moon, it's so far away :D

Correct, in the analog world the only volume available is the gain, but we’re digital so we have more freedom. The gain knob is far away, and if we didn’t have it there, we would attenuate via instrument volume knobs.

Another alternative I've been trying is Audio Vitamins, which automatically gainstages all channels. It's a bit too temperamental for a final mixdown but good for getting a clean mix quickly on a new song.

good tip is hitting ctrl + F5 to separate the mixer window from the rest, that was its easier to scroll up to the gain knob while still seeing the rest imo

I was wondering why not starting to lower the level of the gain from each channel on the ssl by let's say -10 db and when you start mixing and soloing track by track, you can adjust the gain by taste. Will that help too? Or am I missing something?

yeah its a great way ! instead of turning up the volume your gotta start turn anything down for headroom . then you can do anything that you like later in the mix , but obviously there are different approaches do something
