One of the biggest problems players have trying to hit a short ball is getting up to the ball early enough. In this video, I'm going to show you both how to anticipate the short ball and how to hit it. Once we get that covered I'm going to show you how to use a ball machine to drill it, so you never have trouble with it again.

Great video - you're 100% my favourite YT channel at the moment haha. So glad to have you showing the Topspin settings for the drill! That will really help! Please continue sharing your ball machine drills - thanks.

Kev, you’re the only one to correctly tackle this situation… by first addressing shot awareness and recognition !!! Thank you 🙏🏽.

After hitting a great finishing shot I immediately turn around and jog back to the baseline like Steph Curry

I have real trouble with this shot. I do all of the above, but I think the single biggest factor for me is maintaining sufficient distance away from the ball. I get too cramped and often miss it long or wide..

Kevin, considering that rec players are usually late to prepare, do you think this idea of having the racket back and up early on these short balls could be applied to baseline groundstrokes as well? Who was it? Bollitieri I think: you can never be too early to prepare!

Yes for sure! Preparation is important for all strokes!

Into the unit turn the racket face faces the net if you're playing Fred Perry continental. And that's really the only acceptable style for recreation doubles players. Everything else is wishful thinking.

The real issue here for rec players (the rest of us) is we are not used to hitting the ball at high contact point with shorter court to hit to. It’s not an easy shot. It’s a different shot from the FH at the baseline

Great instruction, Kevin! Is your recommendation for the front foot hop for the high short a matter of personal preference? I've been told the opposite: to front foot hop the low approach balls, but stop and hit open stance on the high ones.

I have a bad habit of hitting way long on short put away situations. I think it's probably because of bad racquet prep like you stated in this video and maybe contacting the ball too close to my body (not making contact further from my body with a slightly bent elbow). Thoughts on fixing this coach?
@TotalTennisDomination
@TotalTennisDomination 2 жыл бұрын
Look to close your racquet face slightly (and then once you feel like the ball is falling into the court you can add in more topspin - so that you can swing faster to increase the speed of the ball while still managing to keep the ball in play)

Kevin! My man! I watched this video and applied it at my club tonight in singles and doubles and what a world of difference it made. I probably had a 2/3 success rate on making the shot vs hitting the net but I felt like a whole new player tonight. I only started playing last July and your videos have been my go-to. Keep up the great work and thank you!

Kevin, nice lesson. I discovered the early prep myself because I was guilty of being late, as you stated. The early prep makes moving to the net and going wide much easier. Thanks.
