@@TheBlackTrumpeter I actually played low brass (euphonium) in 6th grade. I'm 22 now and I bought a cheap trumpet about 2 months ago and started trying to learn. I love brass but I also wanted a way to learn to read music that's a little easier than trying to jump right in to piano sheet music. I figure if I only have to deal with treble clef and one note at a time that should help me understand music notation better ha ha. I find that learning more instruments helps you reach a higher level of understanding of music generally.

Haven't played since elementary- The Jazz band at my high-school has been asking me to participate. I remember the fingerings, but my tone was off for some reason, this really helped. It did bring back major flashbacks of my instructor accosting me for not keeping my posture straight while playing though! She was a tough one!

I played trumpet from the 5th grade, through high school. I’m now 31 and picking it back up for the first time since high school. I learned more about controlling tone in 5 minutes and 39 seconds than I did in years of practice when I was younger. Subscribed.

Thank you! You did a great job describing concepts which are difficult to capture. I'm a comeback player after 18 years off. I was previously a high mouthpiece pressure player and I overblew, so the air backed up into my neck. I am gradually relearning the instrument with a focus on connecting all registers of the horn and maintaining relaxation and good tone throughout my whole range. I was nodding along when you described all the different sounds related to tension and closed airway. Thanks for the video, keep it up!

Close your eyes. Take 3 deep breaths before you start. Inhale slowly through your nose then exhale slowly out of your mouth. Take a glance at the music before you start. Don’t care about what people think about your performance. Don’t aim to impress. Aim to do your best. I have terrible social anxiety and stage fright but doing this has helped me a lot.

I have another tip, this tends to be more common in marching band since you are moving, you aren't going to drop your horn. trust me. okay? Loosen you're grip if you are squeezing you're trumpet, or maybe just in general. If you watch prodigy trumpets or pros you'll see them make it look effortlessly, that's because they are allowing their trumpet to vibrate other than squeeze it. To prove my claim, take your trumpet, play a note, squeeze you're trumpet, then let your grip loosen. I've just hit a year of trumpet today and have found this out.

Great advice! Thank you! On the slouching or standing too tall quiz, I’m watching my tuner, which makes me adjust to playing in the correct pitch. Typically I’m way sharp when super tense before a practice or concert, so I’d say standing to tall makes you go sharp, and slouching makes you go flat.

Hi Aaron, what a timely video. I just sat my AMEB Grade 1 trumpet exam and got the results today. I received a B+ mark (Yay for me!) and the comments included that I needed to work on my tone and that my playing was sharp during one of my pieces. I’m the grade 3 teacher at my school here in Perth, Western Australia, and I teach music to the other classes in our school on Tuesdays. I took up trumpet because I thought it would be good to have an additional instrument. Your videos are very clear, to the point, and instructional. Thank you, Aaron.

I'm not sure I comprehended the first step. You mean it's necessary to keep my lips relaxed in the middle while buzzing? I'm not sure how laid-back it should be. Buzzing usually causes tension in the center of my lips. That first step gave me a clear tone, but it was short-lived.
