I press every day with the standing barbell military press and my shoulders feel fine: I find that its better to use a close grip (fingers almost on the smooth part), and of course, do enough rear delt and rotator cuff work. The delts and tris are also small muscle groups that recover very quickly, makes it even better for this style of training.

This is what I needed. Now I have a reason to change from the barbell standing OHP. I always thought doing the standing barbell OHP was the superior shoulder compound, but what's superior is rotation for this. For everything. I love working out, but haven't been excited to workout in a while, like I am now. I'm doing a lot of different shit tomorrow and REALLY can't wait to go back, workout and make these gains.

@JorgeGonzalez-sx7fk6 жыл бұрын
not sure if i’m totally on board with this. you’re basically saying, “if you barbell ohp wrong, then you’re more prone to injury.” moving the bar around your head is wrong, you move your head out of the bar path. you don’t hyperextend your lower back, you squeeze your glutes and maintain thoracic extension. While I will concede to db pressing being more L spine friendly, idk about it being more shoulder friendly. Its pretty easy to bring your humerus too far back in the shoulder socket (like in a btn press) while db pressing which is pretty much impossible to do while bb pressing
@ericbugenhagenOfficial6 жыл бұрын
i can respect your opinion. im just stating mine from years of training athletes as well as myself...dumbbell has much less room for error
@JorgeGonzalez-sx7fk6 жыл бұрын
Eric Bugenhagen much love, brother. my comment is more anecdotally inspired. db presses are more prone to giving me funky feelings even though I agree there is less room for error

Don Meg yeah man, having gotten a way bigger back in the last year and a bit I can really use my lats to support my ohp. switching over to thumbless grip also made a big difference in how good it feels on my joints/the quality of my starting position and bar
@tutu75645 жыл бұрын
Jorge Gonzalez I think it’s all about mobility and anatomy. I can agree on both parts, I love the engagement I get from my back when I do a barbell press, compared to a db. But for over all making my shoulders look bigger and feel better, I would choose the db press. I use to not like it though because my shoulders were wonky with poor mobility. I just started to work my shoulders in all angles really light everyday, and I manage to successfully fix it. My 2 cents at least on those movements.

Truth. I had to stop doing most barbell exercises, from squats to benching, because I would contract one side of my body correctly and neglect the other side. Focusing on mobility and awkward deadlifts has really gotten my overall muscle balance health up. Speaking of rotating the hands,I just discovered I can do weighted dips on my kitchen counters and it feels really comfortable because of the position of my hands where as every gym I have been to I seem to have real problems with their dipping station due to the angle. I truely believe i am going to very very quickly get into new terrority with not just the weighted dip,but all my pressing in general. All due to hand and wrist position. It clearly matters and it seems everyone is slightly different.

@ruburtoe16 жыл бұрын
Its partly the use of the fingers. Its not just a bar of pressure but a wider flat plane of pressure when you dip on the counter surface. So maybe dips with more open hand positions aligns the up-chain myofascial system to more robust movement

This video changed my mind about a lot of shoulder work I was doing and I do feel much more strength and size gains in my shoulders as a result of doing this.
@dojanglesclimb6 жыл бұрын
Completely agree, dude. I'm a fan of landmine presses or single arm DB or KB presses - especially bottom up KB presses, but barbell OHP always snaps my shit. I don't even bb bench press any more for the same reason. I know they're a standard of strength for many people, but it's just not good for me personally. I sit practically all day at work so my posture already blows ass. Not trying to fuck it up more.

Yeah shoulders are definitely different, I use to do a ton of single dumbbell snatches and I could snatch about ten more pounds easy with my right side then with the left... and I could talk about fat grips all day
@taylorhill80016 жыл бұрын
I always do standing over head shoulder presses with my spine backed up against a pole like a basketball pole or the edge of a power rack and keep my back pinched against it, would that be good form or bad..it seems to isolate my shoulders pretty well so the weight is generally being pressed with just the delt and nothing else majorly
@taylorhill80016 жыл бұрын
Yeah I feel like 75 percent of the exercises I do work shoulders already.. So Only work shoulders like 3 times a month heavily... on another note If you cant overhead squat the barbell you need to go back to the kiddy pool lol.. just kidding

Same points apply to the barbell squat. 1. Your hips could be uneven and when axial loaded the uneven hips could lead to uneven stance and spine leading to injury. 2. The bar is not directly over your center of gravity it's behind it making the movement less efficient. 3. Since you have to lean forward you are targeting your Erectors but ur already getting enuf back work from deadlifts. It seems like there could be a better exercise for legs than back squats but I have yet to discover it

My shoulder popped out of socket during one arm DB press cause I tried to balance the weight during the last portion of the lift and arm simply went in wrong position, and boom, dislocation 2months of complete pause, 4 months of additional rehab. I think hypertrophy wise, DB press, especially one arm for the win. But me personally find barbell safer. Its safer to approach lift, it feels safer even during the lockout, its overall safer to start and finish the movement with barbell and ofcourse easier implementation of progressive overload.
@ericbugenhagenOfficial6 жыл бұрын

@finethehuman18215 жыл бұрын
I believe it's not muscular or skeletal imbalance but rather neural. I'm not a hundred percent sure but I think it has to do with motor functions. I'm right handed and my right and left arms are equally strong but when I do say push-ups or pull-ups, my elbows go two different ways if I'm not paying attention. Overhead pressing with my left arm feels a bit unnatural to me as well, almost as if the weight wants to follow a different path than I plan
