Excellent! The only thing I would add is wireless can be a problem due to battery drain (think: long meetings) or Bluetooth range (when paired with a computer, not a phone). Not a fan of USB mics, but to each his own. Use a Shure SM57 connected to a Soundblaster AE-7 (works great).

For me as a student, I just use lav mic. I'm really considering usb mic since it's generally provided better audio without the complexity of XLR. But sometimes I just wanna lay down on bed when I have class that doesn't need my face on it

Long question: Using wireless lav mic to mini mixer (pyle) that connects to USB on iMac. Using Ecamm that I put into Zoom. I get an echo on my voice, but the sound effect and music sound perfect from Ecamm into Zoom. Not sure how to correct this...Any help would be great! Thx

I've also had good luck with the Rode Pod Mic and Pod Mic pro. They are dynamic mics, but sound like butter.

I decided to recommend condenser mics because of their higher sensitivity. I usually use the Shure SM7B, but it really requires a great preamp with lots of gain, or the addition of something like a Cloudlifter or Triton Audio FETHead (the latter of which I own and use).

You'd both be much better off with a mic on your person. Wireless mics would be what I strongly suggest (no cables getting seared in the cast iron pan!). Do you *want* the noise of the cooking in the background? I'd imagine that it's a vital part of the whole experience.

Amazingly helpful. I’ve been trying to find a better video conference solution and have a few different uses cases and you covered solutions for each. Sometimes I want to be mobile and away front the computer screen and you last option for the bill. The Samson G-track pro is a great choice for when I don’t want to fuss with a headset and can have a great mic experience and listen to audio from my sound bar and avoid echo with the cardioid pattern! The first tip (too obvious) starts at 1:10 1. get closer, 2. use a headset, 3. use a lavaliere microphone, 4. usb microphone, 5. use a boom condenser microphone with a USB audio interface (but there are also boom USB microphone without needing the USB interface that similar to this) 6. wireless audio. I knew all these. I was hoping for some tips specific to Zoom such as mentioning the advanced audio settings. Other folks appear pleased though. USB condenser mikes that do not require a USB preamplifier from China include Yotto and Mothca.

I think you could get a splitter that splits the mic (for your lav) from the audio (an earbud). But as mentioned you’ll need to manage the TRRS to TRS conversions with an adapter where necessary.

I recorded a presentation in Zoom, and during the presentation I played 40 seconds of audio from a website. This was a national radio broadcast, and I was playing the audio from a news report that had been livestreamed back in June, and the recording was uploaded to their archive site. After I finished recording my presentation I saved the recording as an MP4, and when I played it back I found Zoom had not captured the audio feed from the website. Is there a setting I can change so that it will capture any audio feeds in addition to my microphone audio feed?

If you don’t mind, I have a silly question. I’m looking at a Ride mic with an arm. But what about my speaker set up, to hear the mtg attendees? I have a Bose external Bluetooth speaker, but does that set up make sense? Any information would be sooooo appreciated!

What kind of Rode mic are you looking at? You have to be careful about the type of pickup pattern that the microphone has (the area surrounding the microphone where it will pick up sound). I think using an external Bluetooth speaker is a great idea, but if your microphone picks up audio from the speakers, you could be in for some nasty feedback! (that terrible sound when a microphone picks up sound from the speakers and just continues to amplify it over and over again).

Have you tried the AKG Lyra using the cardioid pickup pattern? (I just looked on their website, and they call it "Front" recording). The Rode NT-USB Mini has a cardioid polar pattern, so in theory, it should reject noise coming from behind it quite well. My Shure SM7B does. I have it placed about 18 inches in front of my studio monitor, and nobody complains about feedback. It might exist, of course, but nobody complains ;)

Very useful video. Thanks. I have a focusrite 2i2 and a neumann mike. They work fine for recording but the signal is very quiet for zoom meetings. If I turn the focusrite volume to max I get distortion. My laptop is already on maximum. Is there anything I can do please?

Helium Cine webcams are expensive and scarce now. I’m in the midst of figuring out how I could use my iPhone or Canon DSLR as webcam replacement. But that’s led me into another rabbit trail. DSLR/iPhone gives much higher quality and audio options vs webcam, but I’m seeing issues like frame lag and sync/delay issues that webcams don’t have. BTW I’ve had the Go Mic too and love it.

Thank you... for a clear and helpful video.... However... ! I have a problem. I’m using a Plantronics Legend headset with Zoom (for teaching... and as a student). It works well on my (aged) Samsung laptop (running 3rd generation i5). But I don’t think the (outgoing ) sound quality is good enough. I have tried a Rode Lavalier mic (with the 3 rings) but the laptop soundcard doesn’t recognise it. My question: if I use a condenser mic with an appropriate audio input device OR a wireless microphone input, then what do I use to monitor the audio coming back from Zoom? My Plantronics Legend Bluetooth headset does it all in one. And Zoom (and my laptop) have no problem in recognising it. I would like some kind of monitoring set up that is small, discreet (in ear, ideally), ideally some form of wireless set up (Bluetooth or wireless). I would be happy to use a Bluetooth headset... but it has to have high quality outgoing audio (which the Plantronics doesn’t have). Can you help?

Russell, no, you can use a USB microphone. I use a USB audio interface because I already had a small collection of microphones that have XLR connectors. The only way to use them with my computer was via the interface.

Hi. I have the Rode Wireless Go. I teach dance and music and I'm going to attach a lavalier headset to the rode. I have a three ring connection (like a standard headphone). My laptop only has a shared port for headphones and mics. My issue is when I plug it into my laptop I can't hear audio unless I unplug it again. Is there something I can do to be able to use the mic and also hear audio coming from my computer? (In order to teach on zoom and hear student responses during class.) Thank you for the great video!

Kristi, I would get a Bluetooth pair of earbuds such as these, which have the ear hooks to keep the earbuds in place securely while you're moving about - amzn.to/2yl8zRo This one is virtually identical to the pair I own, but the sound quality leaves a little to be desired - amzn.to/2Szv4so Once you turn them on, turn the Bluetooth on in your laptop and connect them. Great, specific info. But the audio on this clip, especially in the first minute, is very hard to hear when your voice drops into its lowest register. To that point, better posture is an especially effective low-tech fix.

Thanks for your feedback, Lisette! Someone else pointed out to me that the microphone was not pointed in the right direction. It is a side address microphone, meaning that I should have been speaking into the side of the mic, not the top. I didn't realize it had drooped down, which caused the audio quality to be much poorer than it should have been.

Kim, check your mixer to see if it has a USB output. Some do, and you may be able to use that instead of having to purchase an additional piece of gear.

I have an important job interview and they sent me a link on Zoom. I tested the audio and it is mostly silent. Once in a while the sounds come through then it is silent again. So it seems like the sound is tryng to come through, but most of the time it doesnt.

I am using an audio interface (M-Audio 192 | 6 to be exact) and it just sounds bad in zoom. I've tested the interface in FL Studio and the recordings are crisp and very clean with the AT2020 but I record my zoom meetings and when i listen back to them it sounds pretty bad. I don't think its my connection since I use my pc close to my router. I will try Ethernet to see if there is any improvement. Not sure if its a problem with zoom or my connection. I suspect the latter.

The room, many giving advice forget about the room... don't use "bare" rooms. They are like "echo/resonance chambers". Carpets, curtains, fabric furniture, etc will help a lot

Hi! the Amazon reviews on Samson Go Mic Mobile are pretty bad. I need to teach over Zoom and I will be moving around while teaching. I have now the wireless Plantronics Voyager Focus, which is OK but looks ugly. I want something that looks better with even better audio quality. So, I was thinking of two solutions: 1) using the Rode Wireless go, and connect them to my pc (with maybe a lav mic as well to connect to the Rode Wireless go) or 2) buy a wired lav mic, connect it to my phone and call in the Zoom meeting from my phone. Then, I guess I will need some wireless earbuds for the audio. Which of these two solutions do you think is best? Are they overkill? --meaning, maybe the Zoom audio compression will not make any lav mic sound like my Plantronics . Thanks!

Hi Luca, if I were in your situation, I would stick with what you already have. I doubt that you'll get much better audio quality from going to any of the other solutions you listed. Zoom's audio compression seems to have improved somewhat since the pandemic started (that's my observation, not any kind of scientific analysis :) ), but ultimately, it's still the weakest link in the chain. I do understand how wearing the Voyager makes you look like you're wearing two doughnuts on your ears while talking intro a straw. If that matters, then I feel comfortable recommending any Rode product, as their reputation precedes them, and my personal experiences with their other products have been excellent. (I own the Rode NTG-1 and Rode Videomic Go)

Hi Alvin, thanks for the feedback! Yes, it's the Samson XPD2 - the model number refers to the combination of the transmitter and the receiver, which both have individual model numbers. The link in the description will take you to the right version. Yes, it will work with your Macbook Pro - I just verified it here and will post a video to show the setup process. One big caveat (and I just discovered this) - not all USB A to micro USB cables will work to connect your Samson GoMic Mobile to your computer. If you Google "samson go mic mobile connect to computer", the first result that pops up explains what's going on. I hope this helps!

Question if you can...I tried making a zoom call with my brother and I switched back and forth between my regular Apple headphones that came with my phone and a $200 Blue Yeti condenser mic. My brother said there was no noticeable difference. He also said if he had to choose he would say the headphones sounded better than the Yeti. I deliver fitness classes via zoom. I have a portable pa speaker system 500w and use a skytec dual channel vhf neadset microphone set. The headset reciever plugs into the speaker and the speaker is then plugged into the my mac book (5 years old) via aux lead. I then play spotify through the laptop whilst using the laptop to deliver my zoom classes. The feedback is that I can be heard easily but the music is 'wavey' of dips out. In the testing Setting , it works and absorbs the sound well, but when it comes to real call live meeting it doesn't hear anything on both sides.

Hi Deepak, here are some things you can do. 1. Put the microphone as far away from the speakers as possible 2. Put the microphone as close to your mouth as possible 3. Turn down the volume of the speakers 4. Use a directional microphone, meaning, the microphone picks up sound mostly from the direction it's pointed at. You'll want to look for the word "cardioid" in a microphone's description, which is a highly directional pickup pattern 5. If the microphone lets you do it, turn down the gain (the level at which the microphone input enters your computer) Hope this helps!

If the microphone you show at 4:38 is indeed the mic you are using, then you are speaking into the wrong end of it. The mic in the illustration needs to be addressed or spoken to from the side that shows the cardioid or "heart-shaped" symbol. Otherwise, you are speaking into it from the top of the mic and are off-axis from the intended design of the mic. You will find that the mic will be much clearer sounding when you do this.

Joe, you’re absolutely right. That mic is a side address mic. I wasn’t paying attention to the mic when I recorded the video, and only discovered in post that the mic had sagged. Part of the reason for that is that I usually use my SM7B and had swapped it out to do some music recording, and just didn’t think about it. Thanks for pointing it out!

Hi Anna, to get it to work with your iPhone, you'd need to make sure that your Lightning to USB adapter is this one - amzn.to/3fdaiqZ You'll need to provide the external power that this adapter provides to power the USB dongle that comes with the XPD2. Alternatively, you can return it and get the Samson GoMic Mobile, which is perfect for your phone and also can be used with your laptop -amzn.to/2BHjq9S The downside, of course, is that it's double what you paid for the XPD2. Hi. Thank you for the help. I just got a brand new iMac 21.5 and the internal speakers (and perhaps mic) are really dark on zoom. It seems like there is no treble. Thus it sounds darkly round. There doesn't appear to be an equalizer function on it/. It does exist on the "Music" app, but that doesn't drive the zoom sound production. Is there anything you can recommend? By the way, I downloaded a few free equalizers but they didn't work on any sound. Thanks so much Helium.

Hi Elenor, I did some searching around and found this article. I tried EqMac and it worked fine for me in the short time I tested it, but the comments section indicates that it doesn't work for everyone. blog.macsales.com/62178-how-to-eq-the-system-audio-on-a-mac/ The only other options I found are paid apps. If you're willing to spend about $30, Soundsource from Rogue Amoeba software lets you control the audio with an equalizer for individual apps, so you can set up your preferred settings for Zoom calls, while setting different settings for when you listen to music - rogueamoeba.com/soundsource/ I hope this helps! I have a Tonor Q9 USB microphone with pop filter. The sound is terrible because there is so much bass. Is there a software Hi-Pass that I an use for live situations like Zoom meetings? I just had a ZOOM meeting with 4 people (I'm in Toronto, Ontario, 2nd person was in Minneapolis MN, 3rd in Phoenix AZ, and finally 4th was in Juneau AK. Obvious very long "strings" were joining our "tin cans" together like we used to do in the school playground. John, I don't know of any reasonably priced solution that would allow you to fix the issue with the lag. Some standalone streaming software and some expensive audio interfaces allow you to change the audio delay to match the video, but I don't think that's what you're looking for :) Sorry I can't be of more help!

Very nicely done! The most informative I’ve seen. Thank you... But a question if I may? You’ve convinced me I do need to get a microphone. Whether it’d be shotgun-like device clip-on styling or a lavalier shirt clip-on, sound quality is important to me. But, perhaps, even more importantly is convenience. If possible I’d like to avoid the tangle of wires. And my only connection to the outside world is a ‘18, 3rd generation, 12.9” iPadPro with USB-C port. So different from what I see offered. Is there a mic that I can just plug-‘n-play with same convenience offered for the iPhone and USB users? If absolutely necessary I do a simple dongle-style connector if it were short, say to connect the Samson Go Mic if possible and such a connector exists? An excellent video ! Before I move on to mics, though, I'm looking for help with the sound of music ! Hoping you might have some experience with Webex. I am teaching a dance fitness class on this platform, and the participants are having a hard time hearing my music.. it "cuts in and out", or sounds like it's underwater. I have an iMac, and have tried playing my iTunes "through the computer' and have also tried placing an external speaker in various locations in my room, all to no avail. Do you have any ideas of what I can try next to make the music more palatable ? You can get a wireless headset mic which can be plugged into a USB audio MIXER like a Behringer 802 or Mackie PROfx6 but choices abound, which can go out directly into your laptop. You can also plug the music into it. Use the mixer for audio and the webcam (?) for video. You may need some kind of powered speaker so you can also hear the music and yourself (your home stereo could work for this.). Setup may require a bit of trial and error to get the levels just right.. This setup may cost a few bucks but this is what it takes to do it right!

I m looking for a BT headset with noise cancelling MIC but most of them costing over 200$. And most of the regular BT headphone come with a decent MIC which pick up lot of ambient noise. Hey great video, was hoping you could help with a problem I'm facing since you use an audio interface with a condenser mike as well: The only difference is that I'm limited to my iPad for zoom, but at the beginning I could hear on both sides of my headphone however suddenly one day I can only hear on one side; i've tried different ways to try and get both Zoom and my audio interface (Scarlett) to give me both sides but to no avail, would you know why this happens for Zoom? Sometimes it's the app problem ie for Facebook Live you would need to connect your interface last to get two sides...

I had to teach voice lessons during the pandemic on Zoom. The delay was extremely frustrating and i only have one remaining student in that modality. There is an app for clear sound, but I found it unreliable. i am also not technically knowledgeable about these things. I purchased a usb mic for doing performing and really got lost in its tech aspects. Ugh! I ultimately hired a videographer and did a pre-recorded KZbin. You do sound like you understand what to use, though i don't think you teach musical lessons, do you?

We're using zoom b/c we want to see the client and maximize fluid, non-verbals, expression, etc...but we're only intently working on a good audio track to be recorded from zoom. We cannot affect much on the client end, but are there zoom settings to milk the best audio, regardless?

Great video on how to improve audio in video conferencing. I'm a teacher and I do zoom meetings with my class. I've noticed that when more than one audio source happens at the same time, for example two students talking at the same time or playing music while singing along, that the audio will cut out and become spotty at best. Do any of the options you mentioned resolve this? I would like to play music and sing a song with my class joining in all together and have it sound as if we were in a room together singing without the audio cutting out. Thanks.

Thank you for a great video, you deliver the essential information clearly for newbies. A lot of channels have been confusing me with a lot of jargon. Could I ask are there any other wireless solutions besides a wireless lavalier mic, suitable for standing a few feet away? I'm a kickboxing instructor and have started to livestream classes on Zoom on my phone (Samsung Galaxy s9). From my research I'm leaning towards a shotgun mic? . I would be worried of things falling off during the class with a lot of dynamic movement. Hey Alex, thanks for the feedback! I made this video for people with little to no audio experience, so I'm glad you found it helpful. A shotgun mic works well from a distance, but the challenge you'll face is that it's highly directional. What that means is that it picks up audio well from the direction it's pointed at, but if you move out of that area where it picks audio up best, your audio will be a lot softer. The best solution for coaches and trainers that I've seen is this fitness headset microphone from Samson - amzn.to/2Tdk840 Keep in mind that it's only the headset, so you'll still need a wireless transmitter to plug it into and the corresponding receiver to plug into the phone. You’d need something like this - amzn.to/2LzDcFy I did some research on Amazon, and this product amzn.to/3cCclod which is much cheaper than the others, seems like it would do what you need it to do. The trouble is, it's a cheap Chinese brand that I've never heard of. Not all of them are bad, of course, but I have never heard of the brand and have absolutely no experience with their products. Hopefully this helps a little.

Hi June, I wasn’t familiar with the Jabra 710, so i looked it up. The pickup pattern of the microphone on the Jabra 710 (the area around which the microphone picks up your voice) is omnidirectional, which means that it picks sound up from all directions. That means that it will pick up surrounding sounds and noises. The benefits of having a microphone with a more focused pickup pattern are: 1. You can get it much closer to your mouth, so the sound from your voice will be louder 2. The sounds from your surroundings will not be as intrusive Ultimately, if you’re happy with what you have and the people you talk to on video conferences are happy with the clarity and volume of your voice, there’s little need to get additional equipment. If not, or if you just want to get even better audio quality, then it may be worth the investment. Hope this helps!
