We simulate a German World War 2 Ju-88 bombing raid on London, but instead of send up Spitfires and Hurricanes to intercept them, we send a squadron of A-10 Warthogs.

Have you tried a large bomber raid vs some modern air defence systems? Would a Luftwaffe bomber run be dense enough to just eat all the SAM ammo and still get enough ordinance on target?

What about trying the A-10 Warthogs against B-17 bombers? That would be a welcome change from the Ju-88s since the B-17 is a different beast altogether. I still recall the 1960/1970s SAM and GEN 2/GEN 3/GEN 4 jet fighter intercept scenarios showing how tough they were when taking all that damage.

I thought of this too... The difference is that the B-17 is much more survivable than the German bombers, so it would be interesting to see how they perform. The B-17's have more guns and more engines, so already there, there's a difference. Also be interesting to add P-51's into the mix, escorting the bombers.

I don't remember what game it was, but maybe Falcon 4.0, or one of the A-10 specific games years back. But I remember that in at least one of them, the A-10 was considered a bit of an underdog as a fighter, since it could carry 2 sidewinders on most of it's underwing hard points, which I think meant a maximum load out of 12 sidewinders on each jet. I wonder if DCS would allow for that?
@Greybeard1357

I remember that game, around the time era of Falcon 2.0 release. Yes you could mount nearly anything on any pylon. Never had much luck with the Migs but it work well vs the enemy helicopters. In comparison Apache Longbow stingers worked too well. Not sure if DCS would allow it though.

Since it's a known that A-10s are not good for scramble-type intercepts, maybe a scenario should have them doing combat air patrol instead, maybe dispersed over a few thousand feet of altitude in the middle of the usual altitude range of most German raids (e.g., if Luftwaffe raids most often occur with low-altitude raids coming at 1,000 feet or less and higher-altitude raids coming at 20,000 feet or above, then have A-10s patrolling spread out vertically from 10,000 to 15,000 feet). The mission could start with air spawn of players...

I wonder if it would make a difference long term in an actual campaign? Once the sidewinders are fired off and the Luftwaffe learns what they are up against, it might not be so easy. (Once they learn how SLOW the A-10s are for example)

Hey GR, just a suggestion for a future mod you could make. In modern SEAD ops one important tool to use is aerial decoys; I know that core game has the ADM-141 TALD decoy, but a newer decoy currently in use is ADM-160 MALD that upgrades the range to 920 km. It would be interesting to see a more complete SEAD doctrine implemented into the game!
@MaxIsStrange1
@MaxIsStrange1 Жыл бұрын
That’s a great idea! If I remember correctly, MALD also has a version which uses EW to simulate the radar return of other aircraft so it can make itself look like a real F-15, C-5, etc. to enemy radars.
@totalnerd5674
@totalnerd5674 Жыл бұрын
@@MaxIsStrange1 Ah, yes. Well, its just that EW doesn't work on weapons, so it will just have to function as a TALD with extra range.
@MaxIsStrange1

@@totalnerd5674 Right. I forgot that DCS is pretty horrible at modeling anything EW-related 😕
@MaxIsStrange1
@MaxIsStrange1 Жыл бұрын
@@totalnerd5674 On the other hand, there might be a workaround. Since it’s only launched from the F/A-18, you could try to make it imitate only the Hornet and, instead of using EW, set the TALD’s RCS to the identical value to the F/A-18’s and basically copy over all the relevant values. It seems like it might work… However, even a simple decoy with such an increased range, and with the ability to set its flight path, or make it loiter over a certain area still would be amazing.
@totalnerd5674

Well the A-10 is about the same speed as the things those guns were designed to fend off. And while the armored cockpit means a pilot snipe is basically out, turbines are if anything LESS resistant to damage than piston engines. Aircooled ones at least. And while an A-10 can retain enough control to RTB with severe damage, they aren't able to do much else if their hydrolics get winged.
