I think back to all the materials I have panned and how much fine gold was washed away dew to my inexperience panning fine materials. I crunched up a led fishing anchor, spayed it gold then put it on the scale. it was .08! I figured if I make it as small as I could and retrieve it back after doing this technique then I should be all good doing this when I find something! Hi Keith Gave this method a try on my dry washer dust and the main principles work just had to adjust my tapping speeds and pressure to get the separation and found that letting the pan bounce off my gut as I was tapping made it work more effectively on my dust. Remembering that the dust I have is all less than 40 mesh, it is what makes it through the Keene dry washer cloth. Keep up the good videos even though I am on the other side of the world the same principles still apply

@CplSkiUSMC8 жыл бұрын
What's funny Keith is that I've kind of instinctively taken to doing everything you're doing there without having seen it before... except for the full pan of water at the end. I usually use a small amount of water and slowly swirl it so that it just covers the material then tip the pan straight back. It rarely disturbs the fine gold and once most of my lights are gone, I'll tap on the pan in the same manner as you to finally separate the fines from the heavies. Your method seems to take less time though so I will be giving it a go. Not 'til spring though, we're buried in snow and ice here.
@hardrockuniversity72838 жыл бұрын
Yeah, it doesn't matter until the water starts to wash over the gold itself. I was surprised at how well Richard did as he was really bad technique wise. I'm guessing that a lot of people are concentrating gold that they never see. Let me know how it works for you. You are surrounded by solid di-hydrogen monoxide?!!! Be careful, I hear that stuff is dangerous! We have myths that tell us about it here in Southern Arizona. :-) Keith
@CplSkiUSMC8 жыл бұрын
Di-hydrogen monoxide is worse below 0degC and air current concentrates it with undulating tendencies which is our current situation. The polar molecule lends itself well to crystallization at 32degF and below, creating a low friction environment that can land you square on your ass. Your recommendation for caution is well warranted and taken under advisement :-) PS: Merry Christmas to you and yours my friend.

Thanks for the demonstration .. excellent technique and explanation! Even I can figure this one out. It may be good to note if the size of pan and bottom size matter. I have a lot of those tiny green 10" pans with a very small bottom area intended for clean-up. My guess is I think this would work best in a pan with a wide bottom.
@hardrockuniversity72838 жыл бұрын
Thank you for the kind words. I think having Richard as a test subject was valuable for the demo. It seems to work with either pan. I generally use a large cleanup pan because the water in it weighs less than a full size pan making it less physical effort. Since larger quantities get mechanically separated here, that's all I need. Large pans might work well dealing with someone's dredge cons for example. Let me know how different pans work for you if you can. Keith

I've been watching some of these type videos. Very fun, reminds me of the good old days Rock hunting with my dad. I'm curious as to why the dish soap or Jet-Dry I've seen used?
@hardrockuniversity72837 жыл бұрын
That is quite simple. Gold is one of very few metals that doesn't oxidize and therefore has an actual metallic surface. Clean metal will tend to repel water (it is called hydrophobic). If it gets just a tiny bit of oil it can become vigorously so. Because of this, fine gold can actually float on water kind of like those 'water strider' bugs you see. If it floats, you can't get it to settle and you won't even see it disappear. When dealing with fine or micro find gold you add a little Dawn or Jet Dry to get the water to 'wet' the gold just like they get the water to dissolve oil when washing dishes. This gets rid of the floating and allows you to deal only with density and particle sizes. Keith

A friend pulled me into this gold business and it is very enjoyable. Hard work but enjoyable. We are prospecting rivers in Massachusetts. We are seeing a lot of silver colored flakes in our pans. (We have found a good amount of pickers that are most definitely gold) Without an assay, I'm convinced these silver flakes are not gold. They show up on a table, a blue bowl and in our pans in large quantities. My friend is giddy and claims it's fine Massachusetts flour Gold but I'm not convinced one bit. Any gold I've recovered is GOLD in color. Any idea to what we are seeing? Thanks! Great video!
@hardrockuniversity72835 жыл бұрын
Several possibilities come immediately to mind: 1. Electrum- a natural alloy of gold and silver. It it is over 70% silver it will lose its yellow color entirely. 2. Amalgam- if there is any metallic mercury present either through natural processes or from old mining, it can coat the gold and cause that effect. Last summer in Idaho it was a common phenomenon from old mining. 3. Platinum group metals- The word 'platinum' came from 'platina' (little silver) as it was discovered in South America during gold panning. It was assumed to be some sort of contaminated silver and discarded as it could not be melted. If you heat one of the pieces to a dull red under very good ventilation (mercury vapors are VERY toxic) and it changes color to a more brown or red yellow it is probably mercury. If you can melt it at a bright yellow glow it is probably electrum, if you have to heat it white hot (oxy acetylene required) before melting it is probably PGM. If the heating leaves a porous and brittle mass, it was probably a base metal. A good lab should be able to answer the question easily.

Thanks for the video, Keith! I've come across several heavily oxidized areas in old tunnels where with my metal detector (Falcon) sounds off ferociously. Yet, when I crush the materials down on site (with a geologists pick), and pan them out I see/find absolutely nothing. However, I have been panning without a surfactant, and using a coarse panning gold technique. I'll try your method and see if I can actually get something in the pan. I would think, though, with the Falcon going off so strongly there would be something obvious and large in my pan when I crush it. Does that not seem strange? Thanks again, I will try your method.
@hardrockuniversity72837 жыл бұрын
I would think that perhaps you may also be crushing too small a sample to too coarse a grind. It would take a pretty good concentration of solely micro fine gold to set off a Falcon. SOMETHING has to be there. Perhaps it is just iron minerals, but you definitely need to figure out what's going on. Let me know how things pan out with bigger and finer samples. Keith
@callmeBe7 жыл бұрын
Thanks, Keith. You probably have it right on both accounts--too small and sample and coarse crushing. But you are right, something is setting off the Falcon--and it discriminates for iron. Will let you know, but am back on the Feather River for a short time now. Big gold there! The Nevada area I can't get into now--we have had some good rains here and the roads are muddy/slippery with clay and what not. Thanks!

Hello Keith. Ok, I went back, and took more samples. I crushed some of the material into a very fine flour. And in that, panned out a tiny bit of micro gold. Maybe 10 really almost can't see flakes from three spoonfuls of flour. For the most part, I don't think I am crushing the material fine enough--I am guessing this kind of material needs to be ground down to a very fine flour consistency--and not very, very small pebble like consistency???? (Very hard for me to go further--I don't have the proper materials). Nothing else in the pan would indicate anything to set off the Falcon. It has a discriminator for iron, so it is not that. I am thinking that in the sample pan I actually have a reasonable amount of gold, but I am still not crushing it fine enough to see most of it. Sound logical?? Thanks much, Keith.
@hardrockuniversity72837 жыл бұрын
How large are the spoonfulls? It makes a big difference. I usually use a two pound/ two cup sample. Ten flakes for me would be about .01 to .02 Oz/Ton. If you are using a tablespoon, that would be 1/16 the volume so the grade would be 16 times as much or about .16 to .32 Oz/T. If teaspoons, 48 times as much or .48 to .96 Oz/t. To grind it fine with simple tools use a hand sledge and a piece of steel thick enough not to bend. First pound down, but once it gets to sand, strike while sliding the head of the hammer along the steel to 'grind' the rock to a fine powder. If you don't have a fine screen, watch Lesson 35 to see how to fine 'screen' material without a screen. Once it is between flour and sugar you should get good liberation. It is not guaranteed, but it is pretty reliable. Let me know how that works out for you. Keith

@johnnyllooddte34156 жыл бұрын

@hardrockuniversity72836 жыл бұрын
Unless it is a very consistent loss and not recoverable in a subsequent panning od the same material, I would disagree with you. With my ore in AZ and most other ores I have tried it seems the losses are much smaller than that. I have discovered that the LARGER particles of goldf are the ones that tend to be lost with this technique. Can you explain the close agreement of my results and the actual assay otherwise? Richard's arsenopyrite ore is an exception to this trend as explained in "Mine Report 5-9 Panning Arsenopyrite Sucks''. It took several iterations before I feel I got a fairly good recovery. On a new ore it is always best to double check how well the technique works with confirmation assays. The major benefit is cost and speed, not precision. This technique when confirmed regularly on a particular ore can give you actionable results in minutes at very low cost. This can be especially important when adjusting a recovery process. Keiith
@hardrockuniversity72836 жыл бұрын
Well, that is very high grade for an intermediate to large tonnage surface mine. It is usually profitable for a large tonnage underground mine. It would require unusually favorable, but not impossible, conditions to make money on a micro scale underground mine. But if it was readily mineable, ground control was not a big issue, and the gold was easily recoverable by gravity means, you could probably turn a profit with a 4 foot wide near vertical vein. You would not get fabulously wealthy, but you should make a decent living. One ounce to the ton one foot wide is my rule of thumb lower cutoff for micro scale undergound. Keith

@hardrockuniversity72837 жыл бұрын
It would work, but I generally use Jet dry in both tubs for hand panning as it minimizes suds. I use dawn in my separation table for economy. Ask anything you want. The purpose is to educate. Glad you like the videos. Keith

Most metals tend to repel water. Gold does also, water tends to 'bead' on clean gold. With very small particles this can allow the gold to actually float on top of the water and get carried off. I have actually observed this myself. The surfactant is there to help the water 'wet' the gold and keep it from floating. It is not a problem with gold as large as medium sand or larger, but what we are dealing with can be much smaller than that. Keith

just curious, what is an "essay" and what is the best way to do one? It sounds like sampling! Thank you! :-)
@hardrockuniversity72837 жыл бұрын
An 'assay' ( not essay) is a laboratory analysis that determines the concentration of something in a sample. In precious metals terminology an assay is a laboratory test to determine the concentration of precious metals in a sample. The most common is the fire assay for gold and silver. They usually do both because the amount of silver is routinely determined as part of the procedure. There are other methods such as atomic absorption spectrophotometry and induction coupled plasma. Each method has its strenghts and weaknesses. For more information you can go to my web site at hardrocku.com and look under 'mining terms'. Fortuitously the terms start with 'assay'. Keith

You put it in the water before you start the panning process. It will suds a little if you are not careful, but not nearly as much as Dawn. You put it in both basins of water you pan with. The second basin is just so you have clean water to do the finish so you can see exactly what is happening and adjust the angle of tilt on the pan precisely. The first basin will get very muddy very quick with crushed rock. With placer concentrates you might be able to get away with just one basin as there will be very little fine material in them.

According to Google there is some fine gold across Michigan (the state, not the lake, but hey...) but only Ishpeming has significant known deposits. From that I would extrapolate that there is some chance of finding some gold, but a very low probability of finding economic quantities. I hope you prove me wrong. :-)

just wondering if the size of the pan matters? I got one of them pan kits from the T.V. show gold rush. I been on the same pan for 2 days trying to get the fines to the top. I was super nervous at 1st but after a few hours I felt more comfortable. Il had a hard time getting the reveal to look like yours.
@hardrockuniversity72837 жыл бұрын
I usually use a 10 inch pan and about 2 pounds of sample. That makes things easy to control and uses less strength. When doing the reveal: first start tapping with the pan full of CLEAR water and about level. You need the water clean enough to see the material on the bottom of the pan. Then start SLOWLY lowering the edge of the pan at about the 4:30 position ( assuming you are holding at 9:00 and tapping at 12:00). until the material in the pan STARTS to move. Then just hold the tilt and keep tapping. The material should keep slowly shifting toward the 4:30 position. The edge of the material between 9:00 and 12:00 should remain touching the edge of the pan bottom where it starts rising as the side of the pan. After about 50% of the material has traveled past the middle of the pan towards 4:30. Stop tapping and carefully tip the pan steeper and then submerge the lower half of the pan in the water and gently swish side to side to remove the material in the lower half of the pan. Then gently submerge the pan at the 4:30 position while keeping it tilted and then slowly level it again with it now full of water again. Repeat the process until you have a tablespoon or less of material in the pan. Then keep tapping as the material thins out at the 10:30 position and maybe even increase the tilt a little bit more (very little) this should reveal the gold as a line right in the angle of the pan between the bottom and the side at the 10:30 position. I often reduce the energy of tapping toward the end also as it seems to give me better control. I hope this helps. let me know about any of these instructions you don't understand fully. Also, you can try changing things up just a little bit- tap harder or softer, change tilt slower or faster, use a different sample size or pan size. Now you see why I told you to save the tailings. It allows you to keep practicing till you get the feel of it. I'm sure you will. It's kind of like riding a bicycle- once you get the feel, you wonder why it was ever hard. Keith

Hi Ken, Just wondering how it was going, and had another suggestion- instead of panning everything every time, focus on the reveal. Tap the pan and show the gold, and then keep tapping while you play with the tilt and see how the gold and the other heavies respond. That is the critical process to master. Keith

Hard Rock University I did the dream tails 1st and made sure to keep all the tailings like you said too! :-) It was very difficult at 1st dew to me only having a small Mickey mouse pan and after a few days I started to get the hang of it! Lots and lots of fine G in the tails but was unable to extract them so I put the black sand in a container until I can get good enough to take it out! I went to bed last night with my gold pan! lol, I finally started to get the hang of it and when I could see the small flakes I went crazy!! I was running around the house singing/skipping/ yelling " I got gold in the pan because Keith is the man"!! I'm actually sitting next to the pan right now while having my coffee!! To actually see real life gold in the pan is like getting hit with a super hero Lazer beam!! I was absolutely mesmerised!! Today after I shovel the 3, 1/2 feet of snow I'm going right back down in the basement to keep practicing the technique Hard Rock University has taught me!! I have learned so much and to be able to pan dirt that my Gold master pans is super awesome! I have been working on the reveal very hard! When I 1st started it took me days to pan a couple spray paint caps full of the Dream tails but after reviewing the video I made small classifier's. I made 2, one was window screen and the next was less then half the size of the window screen> Much much smaller screen< This helped out big time because after that I was able to do this technique more efficiently! I did take one day off dew to my hand/fingers being so sore. My hand is getting stronger everyday tho and I'm now a Lifetime G hunter!! I received the the deluxe gold combo kit from the t.v. show gold rush for Christmas. It came with a pan, scale, sucker bottle and tweezers. It was supposed to come with dirt and a small glass vile but it wasn't in the box. I went down to the gas station in the city and bought one of them small glass cologne bottles that come in the vial. It was only a dollar!! I washed it out and now after I get this technique down to perfection I can put the fine gold in that! I called the manufacturer to complain about not receiving ( dirt/glass vile) they told me there is nothing they can do:-( oh well. I'll never buy anything ever again that has there Gold Rush Stamp on it" If it wasn't for you and Hard Rock University I'd never have known to true feeling of finding gold!! After I get it down perfect I will send you a video of how I do it to make sure it's just like your video!! Thank you so much for all you do and now I can teach my little boy how to pan like a pro!! I have been building Fence since I was 20 year's old, I'm 37 now. I love what I do but I love finding gold way more!! If I lived in a state where gold lives I'd be a full time prospector! I imagine myself down by a Creek listing to Lynyrd Skynyrd/ Pink Floyd while running my shovel in the dirt!! Others have dreams of going on huge vacations or getting that super cool shiny car, my dream is to be able to play in the dirt 24/7! :-) 🌞 🌞 🌞 Thank you from the bottom of my heart and I can't express enough on how much I'm Thankful for all you have done for me!! I feel extremely lucky and blessed that I have become a student and I'm forever in your debt!! Thank you so much!! I'm gonna shovel the driveway as quickly as possible so I can get back down into the basement to keep practicing this technique!! This technique is a huge game changer and anyone wanting to learn NEEDS to subscribe to Hard Rock University!! I cannot wait to send you pix of the super fine Gold that was in that material!! Just wondering if by chance you have "Test dirt" meaning that it has a pre scale weight of gold in it? like .07 or whatever the University thinks is best! This way I can see if I'm right on target. For example> If you sent out 2 pounds of dirt with a 1/4 gram in it. As a student I want to get a high grade but in order to achieve this I'd have to recover the pre determined weight of gold that was set in place by Hard Rock University! To make it harder on the student he/she would not know the pre determined weight of the gold in the material. (This would be a test and would also be time sensitive, 1-2 days to turn in the results! If I was able to hand pan and extract pre determined scale weight then I would get an A. if I extract more then the unknown weight I would get an A+. I would pay for a test like this because then I know I'm ready for the field!! I think the good lord got me into gold during the winter so that when summer gets here I'll be ready to go out on adventures! If you have any tests like this I'd love to get on board!! p.s. I wasn't doing it right. I just watched this video again and seen I didn't have my water at the right level. I will now keep the water well above the bottom surface to prevent wave disturbance!

I get that the coarse riples are not good for fine gold but arent the fine ripples actually made for the fine gold? Just wondering as i could get a ton of superfine gold dust anywhere where i live. Literally, the entire ground here is made of glacial deposits of cemented sand and gravel which has lots of dust in it.

If you are concentrating down to black sands, the riffles usually work fine. It is the final cleaning to gold that doesn't use them. Have you seen my video in Wayne's method of cf cleaning gold?

@@hardrockuniversity7283 Thanks for your reply! I did watch the video just right now and im looking forward to try the technique out. Problem is i get mainly the kind of gold where, after your definition, i can not make out its structure with a lense. Hardly ever anything bigger unless on the correct spots but even then superfine. I also get lots of actualy microscopic fine gold i cant even see or detect - friend of mine is a geology student and looked under some water samples i gave him. It wasnt just water in it apperently ;o) So. Im willing to deal with the super fine dust that i can see with my eyes or a lense but not with the microscopic fine stuff as that would need chemicals which i refuse to use. With your tips in the videos my task will be alot more easy :o) Also my paning technique gets realy well because i am forced to deal with this stuff. Which is the main reason im doing it. For actual money making (not planing on it) i would just contact the owner of the local sand factory. He sits on top of a hughe cemented gravel deposit, covered with quartz sand right on an ancient inside bend of the biggest stream around here :oD Sorry for making my reply so long :o)

@hardrockuniversity72837 жыл бұрын
A 'snifter' or 'sniffer' bottle is used to suck gold up. Some people call it one thing and some people another. The pan is just a standard 10" black gold pan. I think it's an Estwing, but I'm not sure. It's not that important. Any pan will work if it has a smooth bottom. I like the 10" because they are lighter and sized fine for my standard sample size. BTW, the sample assayed at .310 Oz/T. I nailed it. Keith

Its not working. I must not have gold in my pan. Sad day! If I can't see -100 maybe looking at the larger sizes is a waist of time? Placer mud screened down. I put in to much work to not check I have 1 qt of - 100
@hardrockuniversity72835 жыл бұрын
In placer, larger gold is the general trend, not the exception. If it is all screened to -100 and you don't see anything with this technique, you probably don't have much. An assay could resolve the issue conclusively.

you got bubbles from using to much soap. gold is hydrophobic, after a certain "fine-ness" the surface area can can cause ur fines to float (and bubbles dont help) and i dont know anyone whos willing to spend 15 minutes on 1 pan (not even on a clean-up) let alone an 8 hour day just to earn 15 cents worth of gold.
@hardrockuniversity72837 жыл бұрын
This is not for production purposes. While it works well for cleanup ( and DOESN'T take 15 minutes- more like five or 6) the purpose is to allow serious hard rock prospectors and others who are dealing with very fine gold to evaluate samples rapidly and cheaply- as opposed to assaying which takes at least a week and costs a minimum of $20. See how long it takes to adjust you mill using assays. Keith

"It's not the panning it's the reveal"? I think you'll find the panning matters, LOL There's something "excruciating" about watching a beginner panning, but good for him for giving it a go, on camera : )
@hardrockuniversity72836 жыл бұрын
What I meant was that to successfully isolate micro-fine gold, the panning is relatively straightforward but the method of revealing the gold needs to be different. Interestingly enough, it doesn't necessarily work well on MACRO gold which tends to slide down the pan as you tap while tilting it relatively steeply. The transition in behavior seems to occur at about 40 mesh.
