Improving a Foamed Design - Car upholstery Tips

I want to share with my interested users some other tips we should take into account. Needless to say, it is only my point of view, because there are another ways of doing it great.
The first tip is: we should consider the 'stretchy side' of any kind of leather material...it's similar to an 'stretchy vinyl', so according to the position in the seat the patterned pieces should be laid down and cut. Second tip: if the foamed pieces are going to be reinforced in the back, we should choose the right cloth...if the design is completely flat, then a 'stiff cloth' should be more than enough, but if we're going to strive with rounded parts such as bolsters, then I'd recommend the use of an 'elastic cloth' as a reinforcement.
Third tip: to avoid 'clashing thread views' or 'big needle holes', I'd advise to do the first 'closing sewing' with the standard upholstery thread, same color of material, and sew with a thin needle on your machine. For 'double stitches' on top´view, we could use a thicker needle...140=22 would be ok for little thicker thread. Obviously, a thicker thread would be compatible with a thicker needle, 180=24, 200=25, etc.
Fourth tip: as my point of view and some other master trimmers' opinion, the material on top (leather, vinyl, fabric) never should be glued down over...just baste them with some points of glue all around the edges and let it loose. The 'reinforcement cloth' on backside can be thoroughly glued by using a 'glue gun'.
Fifth tip: to help sewing procedure 'basting of seams' beforehand would help a lot. Similar of what a tailor does with the difference we use 'reference notches' to be joined with 'medium duty staples' easy to remove after the sewing.
Sixth tip: the use of glue to keep down and give shape to the seams before sewing the french seams on top...it really makes this procedure very easy.
I hope this information would help to understand next video when sewing the real cover for my chair.

I was looking at a 77 Corvette I acquired and want to change the interior color. Through a couple of refinements on searching out the subject, this video came up...The method used is something I like. I have never done work like this at all but I am the type of person to break it down and perfect each step. Judging by this video I know it's going to take me a LOT of time to learn and accomplish this goal. I feel like I could make a Ferrari-like interior after watching this. P.S. Hello, Upholstery standard foams are polyurethane material and come in three densities: light, medium, and hard. Most common foams are sold in sheets/slabs according to thickness (1/4", 1/2", etc.) A 'medium density foam' is useful for car seats (to foam the cover, pleats, etc.). A layer of thin light foam could also be used on top to add softness in case of cushions. When you reference "elastic cloth" what kind of cloth should one ask for? Is it like a stretch weave polyester or a spandex?

What is that stretchy material you are using to back that foam and leather? My local supplier sells a foam called scrim that comes in different thicknesses that already has the material backing. We glue it to the back of every pattern piece before assembly it helps add that little extra plush feel to every panel piece plus gives more life to the old seat cushions.

Greg Nokes we buy the scrim foam also but we don’t glue it we just see it around the pattern and then cut the extra... the reason is because when U glue the pattern to scrim foam u don’t let the material stretch without the scrim foam having to come with it. It’s hard to explain but just try it you will notice the difference.

Bob Womble, in another vídeo, César explained that other master trimmers also thought that leather should not be glued to the foam, as Brent Parker explains: "Because leather is generally stored rolled up or folded, it needs to be stretched out, flattened and worked onto a job to get its wrinkles and creases out. Thanks again, i have a Sunstar 340BL machine but it lost Walking foot, i never saw it so so hard to find another one to replace, so i must use normal foot like non stick - foot, it's work wellfor some product like motorcyle, truck's seat cover but when i do ulpholstery something more detail like car seat cover i think it's not beauty like yours. As I am located in Mexico I have never heard about 'helmiprene glue'. I use a 'yellow glue/contact cement' which comes in cans or bottles. Most of the upholsterers, shoemakers and leather artisans use it. I am in Canada and will have to get a can from home depot and try that out.Helmiprene is a glue that comes in a big bucket and needs to be thinned with thinner and sprayed through a gun... I have had no luck with it, it always cloggs the sprayer and hard to get a nice spray. I am just learning though could be the gun.

Hello, My native language is Spanish. I would have liked to do the videos in my native language (written and spoken), but I would have not gotten to many people. Nowadays, English has become as a first language in technology and comunication all over the world. The problem is my speaking is still not so good, I am still training to improve it, sorry. I am afraid that instead of being clear I could confuse my youtubers. Anyways, to learn upholstery is not necessary to talk, the one who is interested could learn just by watching the videos and inspiring himself.
