I bought a used, slightly if ever fired at all, CVA Hunterbolt Magnum .50 Cal. in a pawn shop about six months ago for $109.00 WITH a spare .45 cal. barrel. I was shooting it today 12/2/21 from my front porch, Using the porch rail for a rest At 300 Yards and hitting gallon jugs of water with it. OPEN SIGHTS. Load was three Triple 7 Firestar Pellets behind a Hornady SST 250 grain bullet. I know, I couldn't believe it either. But it happened, ( Several Times ).

Great video. I'm new to black powder and want to learn as much as I can. I bought a 50cal stag horn from a friend. Not sure how to take it apart to clean it or even how much powder to use when I'm ready to fire it. so I have some research to do lol

I looked through your videos but didn't find much others for muzzleloading. What is the rifle you are using in this video? It sounds like you are getting great accuracy with it. Are you swabbing between shots?

So glad you stressed the importance of a good quality optic. I have so many buddies in the shooting world that go out and buy 6, 7, 8, 9, even thousand dollar rifles and then put a scope that costs a third of the price of the gun and wonder why they can't hit shit. Great video, I've been using pellets but I've been thinking about trying the blackhorn 209 this year for deer and black bear. What's your thoughts on primers behind the 209? It's all going out of a CVA optima v2 stainless barrel, pushing a 290gr Barnes TM-Z sabot. Again great video

Thanks for a good video. I use CVA-50cal-pellets-federal bullets but i have no problem with anything you said. And though you didnt address safety in this one, i can tell you are a very safe shooter. You had good parents. We all want the best optics we can get, willingness to pay for them is another matter lol I have an average scope and though i wouldnt say it makes me a worse shooter, i do have to focus and concentrate more than I would with a better one. In my own experience with all things guns, like scopes, a $19 scope gets you 80% of the way there; a $600 scope gets you to 90%; a $2000 scope gets you to 92%. The money goes up exponentially for smaller and smaller increments of improvement. So we have to rely on our brains and wits more than the equipment and thats how most get by.

We agree! Things like scopes start costing you a lot of money, for not a ton of difference. But if you've got the money to spend then it's definitely worth it :)

Buy a quality scope. Muzzleloader have a reverse recoil like an air rifle. It will blow the cross hairs out of a cheap one. After blowing up several Simmons and Bushnells I put on a Pentax and have never had another problem.

blackhorn doesn't make the gun any more accurate than even regular BP lol. it's just a smokeless powder (nitrocellulose + Sulphur & manganese to fly under the regulations as a BP substitute IDK how changing the base of your powder makes it still the same but anyways), so you don't need as much to get the velocity (it's only about 200fps difference when measured by weight anyways, so it doesn't blow up guns meant for black powder, very much like early smokeless powders). Even the old sidelocks are capable out to 400-500 yards, that's not that unique. Changing where you put the priming doesn't do much (actually, 209's tend to push the load down the barrel before ignition of the powder, leading to accuracy issues sometimes). If you want to have maximum impact on game, stop shooting pistol bullets out of a rifle, and start shooting rifle bullets (hint: in a .50, that's 450-650gr, in .45 that's 400-550gr). the .50 bore isn't great, hence the reason why .50 cartridge rifles didn't stick around long in the 1800's. Don't know why people buy a .50 if they don't intend to shoot .50 bullets most of the time; just buy the bore you want lol. The difference between .45 and .50 pistol bullets in trajectory is minimal, for example: BC for a round nose 325gr .50 is about .123; and the BC for a 338gr .45 round nose is .240. Given the same velocity, that only makes a difference of about 1.5- 3 inches of drop all the way out to 400 yards, hardly worth the trouble of sabots. If accuracy is your goal, stop using sabot'ed ammo, the bullets are very hard to seat in the sabot consistently, and that leads to accuracy issues, and they're a PITA to load after the 1st shot unless you clean the barrel (not to mention it forces you to use pistol bullets, as none of them have enough bearing surface to stabilize rifle bullets). Most of you inline guys are shooting what would be termed in 19th and early 20th century lingo as an "express" rifle, AKA a rifle that shoots light bullets really fast to have a flat trajectory out to about 175 yards. As far as sights and scopes go, biggest thing is having easy adjustments; and most modern scopes don't have them (I don't call spinning a turret and counting clicks easy, god forbid you lose count).

@bucks2beards1947 жыл бұрын
You’re never supposed to measure your blackpowder by weight. It’s designed to be measured by volume. Check your muzzleloader’s owners manual, I bet it’s in there. It can get pretty dangerous especially when you get to magnum loads
@The-Huntian7 жыл бұрын
The conversion is to multiply the volume equivalent by .7 -- that will give you the load in weight. For example: 120grs x .7 = 84grs weight.
@bucks2beards1947 жыл бұрын
Hey if you got a system that works, more power to ya! I tried weighing out some pyrodex powder and at times it was over the maximum volume that CVA recommends in their muzzleloaders, always different volume. Muzzleloaders can already be dangerous as is, so I decided not to risk it. I’m hardly ever going to be hunting past 150 yards, so I don’t have to be nearly as precise as y’all... I have even debated trying palletized powder when I have to buy more.
@livebig2477 жыл бұрын
Corby May the reason you probably got different numbers on your volume after weighing is because the powder will settle depending on how you shake it handle it so forth. Either that or your scale isn't very accurate. You absolutely can measure your powder on a grain scale using the conversion as the previous guys have told you. That is the best way to do it. The volume is old news bud
@gregopelt34536 жыл бұрын
Black Horn is a extruded powder and is the only black powder substitute you can accurately weigh . pyrodex 777 shockey gold ffg should never be weighed

If you're shooting deer at 300 yards with a muzzleloader you have no ethics. And there is almost no difference between blackthorn 209 and other propellants they all use the same ingredients. That's federally mandated, check if you disbelieve. As far as scopes any 3x9x40 or 50 is more than enough scope. The absolute best scope on the market as we speak is a company not many have ever heard of. G.P.O. stands for German Precision Optics. I bought the 3x9x42 and it is going to give Swarovski and Khale's a run for their money. The 3x9x42 was $349 on amazon and brothers it is a steal at this price point. Best Clarity and brightness you'll ever see in a riflescope. As far as rifles CVA "Optima" is the only way to go. For what you get and accuracy nothing is going to out do it. Simple as that. I shoot 100-200 yards no further. ""Ethics"":..!!!! I use a 310 grain Lee mold for all my bullets. 50 cal. "" It hits them like the hand of God""...!!! Drop and flop. Trust me on this stuff, been doing it since he was in diapers. You can spend a lot of money on rifles and especially bullets like #15 bullets for $26 is the norm. I know a lot of people who hunt with their "optima" year-round. No need for a dedicated deer rifle. Think about it. But I live in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Va. Mostly Mountains and thick woods. There are no 1000-yard fields. Keep it simple peoples. I shoot 70 grains and buy any 209 primers I can find. CCI is my favorite, but no one ever has them. Screwed without primers, load up on any you find. Peace.
