Improving thrombectomy triage in urban areas

Hazem Shoirah, MD, Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, New York, NY, discusses recent developments to the endovascular thrombectomy (EVT) triage landscape. He highlights the usage of speech alongside the Los Angeles Motor Scale (LAMS), to generate an S-LAMS score, which is used to determine where to transport potential stroke patients based on need. This has enabled patients with high S-LAMS scores to be treated faster by taking them directly to thrombectomy centers. Dr Shoirah also discusses the trip-and-treat model, wherein the treatment team travel to treat patients, which can help cut down recanalization time in dense urban areas like New York. This interview took place at the American Academy of Neurology (AAN) Annual Meeting 2024 in Denver, CO.
